Franklin Park, IL...Jim Allen, water efficiency division manager for Sloan Valve Company, recently appeared as a guest speaker at the Green Building & Energy Conservation Conference in Hangzhou, China. He discussed how water-efficient plumbing systems, which can be specified within the guidelines of the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System, provide a cost-effective means for addressing water shortages.

"LEED has become the most influential driver for designing sustainable buildings," Allen said, "because it offers easily identifiable measures that professionals can follow." He added that saving water is critical to the economic development and overall future of China and other countries that face water crises and that LEED offers a good roadmap for achieving water-efficiency goals.

Allen noted how China's booming economy has brought a higher standard of living for many citizens, but economic development is straining the country's water resources. "Urban areas, which have had tremendous population growth in the past decade, are going through water at an alarming rate," said Allen. "China needs to take serious and immediate action to protect its water resources."

Irrigation needs, drought, contaminated water supplies and rising demand for water to power petrochemical plants and other industries, as well as to serve the growing population, have all contributed to China's water problem.

Allen said that China and other countries that are facing water shortages, including the United States, will have to adopt aggressive strategies, such as LEED, to more efficiently use water.

"It's our responsibility to use our precious water resources wisely, and water-efficient plumbing systems can substantially lower water usage," he said.

Sloan Valve Company, which was one of the Green Building & Energy Conservation Conference sponsors, showed many of its water-efficient plumbing products at its booth. Sloan's Waterfree Urinals, low-consumption Flushometers and low-flow faucets were among the products on display.

Sloan Valve Company is the world's leading manufacturer of water-efficient plumbing systems and has been in operation since 1906.
