Press release date: May 13, 2008

COLUMBIA, Md., May 13, 2008 - Shimadzu Scientific Instruments has partnered with Thomas Scientific for the U.S. sales and distribution of several Shimadzu spectroscopy products, including UV-1800, UV Mini and BioSpec-mini spectrophotometers.

With this non-exclusive distributor agreement, Shimadzu seeks to widen its spectroscopy footprint in the U.S. by utilizing Thomas Scientific's extensive distribution network, as well as its brand recognition built on a lengthy history of serving the scientific community. Both companies will look to co-market these products through solo and joint efforts, and will leverage their respective expertise to capitalize on an expanding marketplace. "We are extremely pleased to add these high-quality Shimadzu laboratory instruments to our portfolio," said LouAnn Evans, vice president of marketing at Thomas Scientific. "Shimadzu's commitment to product quality, combined with our ability to provide superior customer service and delivery, is a winning combination for excellence." Boasting best-in-class resolution (1 nm) and the smallest footprint in its class, the UV-1800 delivers better performance and ease of use with powerful functionality and UVProbe software that comes standard. Key features include reduced stray light and noise levels, USB memory ready capabilities and easy data processing with a variety of measurement modes. Shimadzu's UV Mini comes with a spectrum mode that provides full spectral data acquisition over the wavelength range of 190 nm to 1100 nm. Its standard peak pick function allows for clear and accurate detection of the most sensitive wavelengths. The UV Mini also provides multi-point calibration curves for applications requiring various standards. The BioSpec-mini gives bioscientists new opportunities for comprehensive nucleic acid and protein analysis. Its standard functions include: double and single stranded DNA and RNA quantitation; oligo length and sequence based quantitation; and Lowry, UV, BCA and Bradford protein assays.
