Senior Materials Engineer to Speak at ASM Award Night


AURORA, IL - - (November 6, 2008) - - Frederick E. Schmidt, Jr., Ph.D., P.E., Technical Director of Materials Engineering at Engineering Systems Inc. (ESI) has been selected by the Philadelphia Chapter of ASM International to be the lecturer on Sauveur Award Night, being held March 19, 2009. Dr. Albert Sauveur, an honorary member of ASM, and the first recipient of both ASM's national and chapter awards (1934), established the first metallographic laboratory at Harvard University and was affectionately known as the "Dean of American Metallurgists."

Dr. Schmidt has been an active member of ASM International (the society for materials engineers and scientists) for the past 45 years and was elected Trustee in 2005. His presentation, "Microstructure and Microanalysis of the Historic Phoenix Column Structural Irons," will discuss a colorful, high tech metallography investigation of the macro and micro structure of early (1863) wrought irons used for "skyscraper" construction from 1850 to 1890, and the historic Griffith Cannon of Civil War fame during the battle of Gettysburg, PA.
