Whitehead is currently member of Memphis Chapter 105 and began his involvement with SME in 2002 while completing his bachelor's at University of Memphis. SME to Honor Dedicated Member with the 2013 Award of Merit



Recipient recognized for contributions to the Society



DEARBORN, Mich. — For 55 years, the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) has honored outstanding SME members who have made esteemed contributions to the Society's professional activities and growth.



The 2013 Award of Merit recipient is Jim Whitehead, a senior design engineer for IPS Corporation in Collierville, Tenn. Whitehead began his involvement with SME in 2002 while completing his bachelor’s at the University of Memphis. He is currently a member of Memphis Chapter 105.



In 2003, Whitehead transitioned from the student chapter into the senior chapter as chair-elect and has held an officer position every year since. He recently became an SME membership consultant for Central Arkansas Chapter 123 and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff S348.



In addition to Whitehead’s SME involvement, he has served on the Memphis-Area Joint Engineers Council for several years, assisting in organizing Engineers Week activities, including an annual design competition for area middle and high school students.

In 2010, Whitehead was selected as the MJEC/SME Featured Engineer. He holds several patents in the electrical field.



Whitehead will receive the SME Award of Merit during the Awards Luncheon on June 3 at the SME Annual Conference, June 2-4, 2013, at the Renaissance Baltimore Harborplace Hotel in Baltimore.



Nominations for the 2014 Award of Merit are due August 1, 2013, and forms are available at sme.org/awardofmerit.
