SME announces winners of Professional Development Award.

May 18, 2011 - Student Relations Committee of SME has awarded its inaugural Faculty Advisor Professional Development Award to educators committed to next generation of manufacturing professionals. Award recognizes service of faculty advisors to SME, and their student chapters, in advancing manufacturing knowledge, education, and Society's strategic plan. Christopher Gallagher and Bahram Asiabanpour, PhD, CMfgE, received $1,000 recognition, while Ross Monroe and Daniel Kandray, PE received $2,000 recognition.

DEARBORN, Mich. - The Student Relations Committee of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) has awarded its inaugural Faculty Advisor Professional Development Award to educators committed to the next generation of manufacturing professionals.

This annual award recognizes the service of faculty advisors to SME, their student chapters, in advancing manufacturing knowledge, education and the Society's strategic plan.

The purpose of this award is to provide professional development support for current student chapter faculty advisors, acknowledge and reward those who demonstrate commitment to advancing SME's strategic plan, highlight services and activities performed on behalf of SME and recognize advancing the professional growth of student chapter members. The award includes a monetary recognition of up to $2,000.

"We're pleased to recognize these dedicated faculty advisors who are committed to their students and aiding manufacturing by ensuring their students have been given every opportunity to learn and be successful when they enter the workplace," said Raju Dandu, PhD, Kansas State University Salina, chair of the SME Student Relations Committee. "Each of this year's awardees has indicated that their winnings will be shared with their students through the acquisition of more tools and hands-on experience to assist them in the real world."

The 2011 awardees are:

$1,000 Recognition
o Christopher Gallagher, Olympic College, Bremerton, Wash.
o Bahram Asiabanpour, PhD, CMfgE, Texas State University - San Marcos, San Marcos, Texas

$2,000 Recognition
o Ross Monroe, Edmonds Community College, Lynnwood, Wash.
o Daniel Kandray, PE, University of Akron, Akron, Ohio

SME intends for the Faculty Advisor Professional Development Award to grow enabling the recognition of more faculty advisors in 2012. Information on when and how to apply for this award will be sent to faculty advisors of compliant student chapters in early 2012.
