IEEE, a member and accredited standards developer of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), has recently announced the appointment of E. James (Jim) Prendergast as its new executive director, effective on April 6, 2009. Succeeding former IEEE executive director Jeffry W. Raynes, who resigned in June 2008, Dr. Prendergast will serve as chief operating officer (COO) and will manage the more than a thousand IEEE staff members at seven U.S. and overseas locations.

A member of IEEE for thirty-two years, he most recently served as vice president and chief technology officer for DuPont Electronic and Communication Technologies. Prior to joining DuPont, he was vice president and director of Motorola's Physical Sciences Research Laboratories.

A native Australian, Jim received his undergraduate degrees from the University of Sydney and his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Cambridge.
