Innovative Design Is Simple, Economical, and Operable Up to Full Line Pressure

AURORA, Ill. - Processing Technologies International (PTi), a leading global manufacturer of high-performance sheet extrusion machinery, has been awarded a U.S. patent for its new manual roll gap adjustment device which features an integral ratchet positioning arm. The gap adjustment mechanism, which can be operated up to full line pressure of 600 to 800 lb per linear inch (pli), is simple, efficient, and less costly than competitive methods.

"This new invention offers processors and manufacturers a simple and economical solution for roll gap adjustment that is not restricted by full line pressure," said James Johnson, PTi's Senior Vice President of Applications and Technology.

U.S. patent 8,152,509 was recently granted to PTi. The integral ratchet positioning arm offers simple and effective manual adjustment of the chrome roll gap on PTi's cooling and polishing roll stands. Today's conventional roll gap adjustment systems, including manual jack screw arrangements or motorized servo hydraulic mechanisms, are more costly, according to Johnson.

The integral ratchet is operated with a wrench device which moves up or down a threaded shaft to accurately set the chrome roll gap within +/- 0.0005 inches. Analog gauges on each side of the roll provide a precise gap measurement for the operator.

The unique mechanical benefits of the ratchet wrench lever arm and the threaded shaft enable the unit to be operated up to full line pressure (600 to 800 lb per linear inch). In comparison, conventional systems require a reduction in roll pressure to permit changing of the gap setting.

The manual roll gap adjustment device is available as a standard feature on PTi's G-Series roll stand.
