May 7, 2014 - NEMA praised House Energy and Commerce Committee for reporting out the Energy Savings through Public-Private Partnerships Act of 2013 (HR 2689). According to NEMA President/CEO Evan R. Gaddis, there is no better example of a public-private partnership than energy savings performance contracts, which this bill encourages. Contracts use private financing to renovate government buildings at no cost to taxpayer in a way that reduces energy consumption, creates jobs, and offers return on investment.

ROSSLYN, Va., —Today, the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) praised the House Energy and Commerce Committee for reporting out the Energy Savings through Public-Private Partnerships Act of 2013 (HR 2689), authored by Congressmen Cory Gardner (R-CO) and Peter Welch (D-VT).

“The committee showed today that common sense energy efficiency policies have strong support within Congress,” said NEMA President and CEO Evan R. Gaddis. “There is no better example of a public-private partnership than energy savings performance contracts, which this bill encourages. These contracts use private financing to renovate government buildings at no cost to the taxpayer in a way that reduces energy consumption and energy costs, creates jobs, and offers a return on investment."

According to Gaddis, committee passage of HR 2689 provides further momentum for enacting broader energy efficiency legislation this year. The House recently passed HR 2126, the Energy Efficiency Improvement Act, and the Senate is poised to consider the long-awaited Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act (HR 2074, or Shaheen-Portman) early next month.

Indeed, public support for energy efficiency policies is high.  According to a survey conducted by NEMA and the National Association of Manufacturers, nine in ten likely voters support energy efficiency as a key part of the solution addressing our energy challenges.
