NEMA publishes composite insulator standards.

Press Release Summary:

ANSI/NEMA C29.12-2013 specifies composite suspension (tension) insulators with minimum section length of 46 in., while ANSI/NEMA C29.17-2013 specifies composite transmission line post type insulators with section lengths 41 in. or greater. Lastly, ANSI/NEMA C29.18-2013 specifies composite distribution line post type insulators with section lengths 30.6 in. or less. All insulators addressed by standards are intended for use on overhead lines for electric power systems.

Original Press Release:

NEMA Publishes ANSI/NEMA C29 Composite Insulator Standards

ROSSLYN, Va. – The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) published three standards in its C29 series: ANSI/NEMA C29.12-2013 American National Standard for Composite Insulators—Transmission Suspension Type, ANSI/NEMA C29.17-2013 American National Standard for Composite Insulators—Transmission Line Post Type, and ANSI/NEMA C29.18-2013 American National Standard for Composite Insulators—Distribution Line Post Type.

ANSI/NEMA C29.12-2013 specifies composite suspension (tension) insulators with a minimum section length of 46 inches (1168.4 mm) made of a fiberglass-reinforced resin matrix core, polymer material weathersheds, and metal end fittings intended for use on overhead transmission lines for electric power systems. The 2013 edition includes additional definitions and abbreviations, as well as minimum dry arcing distance values.

ANSI/NEMA C29.13 may be downloaded at no cost or purchased in hardcopy for $39 on the NEMA website.

ANSI/NEMA C29.17-2013 specifies composite transmission line post type insulators with section lengths 41 inches (1041.4 mm) or greater made of a fiberglass-reinforced resin rod core, polymer material weathersheds, and metal end fittings as defined in this standard and intended for use on overhead lines for electric power systems.

ANSI/NEMA C29.17 may be downloaded at no cost or purchased in hardcopy for $64 on the NEMA website.

ANSI/NEMA C29.18-2013 specifies composite distribution line post type insulators with section lengths 30.6 in (777 mm) or less made of a fiberglass-reinforced resin rod core, polymer material weathersheds, and metal end fittings as defined in this standard and intended for use on overhead lines for electric power systems. Mechanical and electrical performance levels specified herein are requirements for new insulators. A new section has been added for sample test units including dimensional, galvanizing, and cantilever breaking load (CBL).

ANSI/NEMA C29.18 may be downloaded at no cost or purchased in hardcopy for $65 on the NEMA website.

NEMA is the association of electrical equipment and medical imaging manufacturers, founded in 1926 and headquartered in Rosslyn, Virginia. Its 400-plus member companies manufacture a diverse set of products including power transmission and distribution equipment, lighting systems, factory automation and control systems, and medical diagnostic imaging systems. Total U.S. shipments for electroindustry products exceed $100 billion annually.
