Press release date: June 9, 2014

ROSSLYN, Va., —The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), and the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) have published National Transportation Communications for ITS Protocol (NTCIP) 1209 v02, Object Definitions for Transportation Sensor Systems (TSS).

NTCIP 1209 v02 includes requirements for communicating between TSS field devices and the host or central systems (including a traffic management center) that control and monitor a TSS. TSS data describes certain traffic parameters including accurate, near real-time information on traffic flow. Traffic flow is characterized by data that describe the number of vehicles in various portions (sometimes lanes) within a TSS zone. TSS data may be acquired using field devices that rely on a number of different technologies to detect vehicles.

A hard copy of NTCIP 1209 v02 may be purchased for $161 and an electronic copy may be purchased for $80 by visiting the NEMA website.

Since 1996, NEMA, AASHTO, and ITE have been jointly developing NTCIP, a family of communication protocols for traffic management devices.

NTCIP 1209 v02 is also available from the NTCIP website, www.ntcip.org, as a no-cost Adobe PDF download. This special offer is made possible through support from the U.S. Department of Transportation Joint Program Office, whose assistance is gratefully acknowledged.

AASHTO, founded in 1914, is a nonprofit, nonpartisan association representing highway and transportation departments in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. ITE facilitates the application of technology and scientific principles to research, planning, functional design, implementation, operation, policy development and management for any mode of ground transportation. Founded in 1930, the Institute is headquartered in Washington, D.C.
