NEMA, AASHTO, and ITE release NTCIP 1209 v02.

Press Release Summary:

NEMA, AASHTO, and ITE have published National Transportation Communications for ITS Protocol 1209 v02, Object Definitions for Transportation Sensor Systems. NTCIP 1209 v02 includes requirements for communicating between TSS field devices and host or central systems that control and monitor TSS. TSS data describes certain traffic parameters including accurate, near real-time information on traffic flow. It may be acquired using field devices that rely on various technologies to detect vehicles.

NEMA, AASHTO, and ITE Release NTCIP 1209 v02 on Transportation Sensor Systems

ROSSLYN, Va., —The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), and the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) have published National Transportation Communications for ITS Protocol (NTCIP) 1209 v02, Object Definitions for Transportation Sensor Systems (TSS).

NTCIP 1209 v02 includes requirements for communicating between TSS field devices and the host or central systems (including a traffic management center) that control and monitor a TSS. TSS data describes certain traffic parameters including accurate, near real-time information on traffic flow. Traffic flow is characterized by data that describe the number of vehicles in various portions (sometimes lanes) within a TSS zone. TSS data may be acquired using field devices that rely on a number of different technologies to detect vehicles.

A hard copy of NTCIP 1209 v02 may be purchased for $161 and an electronic copy may be purchased for $80 by visiting the NEMA website.

Since 1996, NEMA, AASHTO, and ITE have been jointly developing NTCIP, a family of communication protocols for traffic management devices.

NTCIP 1209 v02 is also available from the NTCIP website, www.ntcip.org, as a no-cost Adobe PDF download. This special offer is made possible through support from the U.S. Department of Transportation Joint Program Office, whose assistance is gratefully acknowledged.

Founded in 1930, the Institute is headquartered in Washington, D.C.

NEMA is the association of electrical equipment and medical imaging manufacturers, founded in 1926 and headquartered in Rosslyn, Virginia. Its 400-plus member companies manufacture a diverse set of products including power transmission and distribution equipment, lighting systems, factory automation and control systems, and medical diagnostic imaging systems.
