Timmons Pleased McCain Called for Low Taxes, Free Trade in GOP Convention Speech

WASHINGTON, D.C., September 8, 2008 - On this week's "America's Business with Mike Hambrick" radio program, National Association of Manufacturers Executive Vice President Jay Timmons says Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) outlined a "strong vision" for improving America's economy in his speech at the Republican National Convention on Thursday night. Timmons, who attended the Republican event this week in Minneapolis-St. Paul and last week's Democratic National Convention in Denver, praised McCain for calling for lower taxes, more free and fair trade, and exporting freedom and democracy around the globe.

WHO: NAM Executive Vice President Jay Timmons
Former Executive Director of the National Republican Senatorial Committee

Timmons says he was pleased by McCain's comments on economic improvement:
"You know, he really did outline a strong vision for economic improvement in the country. He talked extensively about lower taxes and how that can spur the economy. He was a passionate advocate of opening new markets - international markets - to U.S. goods. And he was very articulate also on the importance of exporting freedom and democracy to help lift the economic situation, not just here in America, but around the world as well."

Timmons says Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's speech electrified the convention audience and public on Wednesday. McCain's decision to pick Palin as his vice presidential running mate creates an impressive, history-making ticket, he says:

"And I think the (Republican) ticket is going to be a very strong one going forward. And of course the Obama-Biden ticket is very strong. So America is going to have a very unique election this year and whatever happens, history will be made. We will either have the first African-American president or the first female vice president. And it's a great thing for American to be able to open this new chapter."
