Miniature sapphire and ruby balls for applications requiring high wear-, chemical-, and temperature-resistance, precise sphericity, and a smooth surface finish are available from Meller Optics, Inc. of Providence, RI.
Meller Sapphire and Ruby Balls come in 42 inch and metric sizes from 0.1 mm to 0.5" dia., feature Moh 9 hardness (Knoop 1800 perpendicular to the C-axis and 2200 parallel to the C), which is second only to diamond. Providing superior wear resistance, these precision miniature balls have a 2,000°C melting point and are impervious to most chemicals, solvents and detergents.
Suitable for use in medical and chemical pump check valves, metering valve assemblies, as ball point pen and stylus tips, ball and roller bearings, and in fiber optic lens systems, Meller Sapphire and Ruby Balls have surface finishes of 20-10 scratch-dig or better. They can also be precision ground into plano-convex lenses and drilled for use as bearing rollers.
