William Shields, President of Jacksonville Volunteer Fire Company The Challenges After the Jacksonville Volunteer Fire Company in Phoenix, Maryland, was fined $40,000 for light pollution from its building, it was looking to choose energy efficient products that do not lose light into the night sky. The Fire Company was also looking to reduce noise produced by lighting fixtures throughout the facility grounds and reduce maintenance costs. After receiving several quotes from electrical contractors who failed to explain the Kelvin rating and other technical details relative to making an informed decision about LED lighting, the fire company’s board of directors selected the renewable energy company of Bmore Green of Essex, Maryland for installation, which opted to use MaxLite products for their performance and quality.
On the soffit over the front of the building that lights the sign and front truck bay, 13 75-watt metal halide PARs were replaced with 13 of MaxLite’s six-watt LED PAR20s. On the east side of the building, four 250-watt metal halide fixtures were replaced with four of MaxLite’s 20-watt full cutoff LED Wall Packs and four of MaxLite’s 30- and one 40-watt full cutoff LED Wall Packs replaced 250-watt metal halide wall mounted canopy fixtures on the west side of the building along the driveway and grassy area with trees that leads to the back of the building. Over the fire truck bay doors, three 450-watt metal halide wall packs were replaced with three MaxLite 30-watt full cutoff LED Wall Packs. In the back lot where the firefighters sell Christmas trees during the holidays, two 1,000-watt quartz flood lights were replaced with two MaxLite 100-watt LED Area Lights with knuckle. Inside the building in the porch that leads to firefighter recruits’ training area, a 30-watt LED Canopy Fixture was installed.
Shane Hresko, CEO of Bmore Green said that the LED Area Lights installed on the back lot do not create ballast noise or attract insects, and during the holiday season the back lot was lit up so bright that the firefighters quickly sold out of their Christmas trees. The full cutoff LED Wall Packs installed on all sides of the building meet Dark-Sky-compliance and do not waste light into the night sky. And Mr. Hresko noted that the LED PAR20 installed over the front truck bays product such high quality light from 20-feet above the ground that the firefighters can see down into the deep pits that collect excess debris from the trucks. In the end, just from replacing its existing lighting with MaxLite’s LED lighting products, the Fire Company saved 10 kWh of energy, on the outside of the building alone.
