Manufacturers: Expanding Markets Will Create Economic Growth
Welcome Japan Entering TPP, but Must Ensure High Ambition and Level Playing Field for Manufacturers
Washington, D.C. – National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) President and CEO Jay Timmons issued this statement after Japan announced it will seek to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations:Â
“Manufacturers welcome Japan’s intention to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations. A successful and ambitious TPP agreement will open up new opportunities in overseas markets and eliminate barriers for U.S.-manufactured exports, sustaining and creating jobs for American workers.
The NAM has supported the inclusion of new member countries into the TPP talks, such as Canada and Mexico—which have already joined—and Japan, as long as they join the negotiations on a comprehensive basis. It is important that the negotiations are not slowed down and countries commit to the same level of high ambition as the existing TPP countries. Significant work remains to ensure manufacturers in the United States gain a level playing field and concrete access in the Japanese market.
The NAM is committed to working with the Administration and Congress to ensure the most robust outcome to these negotiations in order to strengthen commercial opportunities for manufacturers throughout the United States. With many headwinds limiting U.S. success in the global economy, the TPP negotiations must achieve concrete results that create jobs and economic growth.”
