COVINGTON, Ky. Nov 16: John F. Turner, 64, today was elected to the board of directors of Ashland Inc. (NYSE:ASH), according to James J. O'Brien, Ashland Inc. chairman and chief executive officer. With Turner's addition, the Ashland board now consists of 11 members, 10 of whom are outside directors. O'Brien is the sole inside director.

Turner has a distinguished career in both the public and private sectors. He recently served as assistant secretary of state for Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs (OES), a post he was appointed to by President George W. Bush. In this capacity from November 2001 through July 2005, he was responsible for programs and activities concerning infectious diseases, biodiversity, the environment, climate change, oceans affairs and science and technology. In January 2005, Turner received the department's Distinguished Honor Award from Secretary of State Colin Powell. Before assuming this appointment, he was president and chief executive officer of the Conservation Fund, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to public-private partnerships to protect land and water resources. Between 1989 and 1993, Turner was director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. He also served in the Wyoming state legislature for 19 years and is a past president of the Wyoming State Senate.

An accomplished author on topics relating to wildlife conservation, outdoor recreation and natural resource polices, Turner is the recipient of numerous awards, including recognition from the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Audubon Society, National Wildlife Federation and Ducks Unlimited. A native of Moose, Wyo., he holds a Master of Science degree in wildlife ecology from the University of Michigan and a Bachelor of Arts degree in biology from the University of Notre Dame.

Turner also serves on the boards of directors of Peabody Energy and International Paper Company.
