A Guide to Pulse Width Modulated Flow Control from Spraying Systems Co. explains how PWM flow control can improve spray coverage and accuracy in a wide range of coating, lubricating and dispensing applications. PWM flow control regulates flow by adjusting an electrically-actuated nozzle's duty cycle and frequency rather than by changing liquid pressure. Flow rate can be changed almost instantaneously to adjust for line speed changes or other conditions without affecting spray angle and drop size. This results in uniform and precise spray coverage under a wide range of flow rates.

In addition to adjustable flow at single pressure, advantages of PWM flow control include reduced clogging by maintaining low flows even with large spray orifices; reduced misting for improved safety and transfer efficiency; decreased fluid consumption; and better product quality due to uniform coverage. PWM flow control also allows very low flow rates to be achieved - flow rates normally only possible using air atomizing nozzles. In some applications, air atomizing nozzles can be replaced with hydraulic nozzles eliminating the expense of compressed air.

The guide shows how PWM flow control is successfully used in a wide range of applications such as spraying flavors and oils, adhesives, colorings, lubrications and catalysts like water or silicone.

PWM flow control can be achieved by using Spraying Systems Co.'s PulsaJet® electrically-actuated nozzles and an AutoJet® spray controller. A wide range of PulsaJet nozzles are available for cycling speeds up to 10,000 cycles per minute and flow rates ranging from 0.47 gpm to 15.8 gpm at 100 psi (1.8 l/min to 59.8 l/min at 7 bar).

Spraying Systems Co. is the global leader in spray technology. It has the broadest product range in the industry with several manufacturing facilities and sales offices in more than 85 countries. Spray nozzles, turnkey spray systems, custom fabrication and research/testing services comprise the 70-year-old company's offering. More information on PWM flow control is available at www.spray.com or by contacting the company directly at 1-630-665-5000.
