Gases and Welding Magazine Highlights New Welding Alloys

Light metals require new joining methods, new alloys.

Dewitt, NY - With the emphasis on being "green," and with the price of gas on the rise, auto manufacturers are turning to lighter metals, such as aluminum, to increase gas mileage. As lighter metals become more prevalent, new welding alloys and new welding techniques are quick to follow. As part of its continued commitment to helping young professionals further their careers in the gases and welding industry, the July issue of GAWDA Edge features an article written by Grahame Savage entitled "Light Alloys."

When it comes to manufacturing more fuel-efficient vehicles, the European auto industry leads the way. The average European-manufactured vehicle is composed of 85 percent aluminum. The light-weight metal dramatically increases a vehicle's gas mileage. By contrast, American-made vehicles contain only 15 percent aluminum. However, the US excels in the truck trailer industry, where aluminum makes up a large part of many trailers.

As Savage explains in the premiere magazine for young professionals in the industry, as the US adapts to lighter metals, we will see an increased demand for better joining methods and new aluminum welding alloys to meet these new needs. The newest alloy to hit the market, X4043P, is the first to be introduced since the 1950s.
