Energy Asst. Sec. Cathy Zoi to Give Keynote Speech at BIO's World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioprocessing
Plenary to explore development of full biofuels value chain
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Industrial biotechnology can make significant contributions to worldwide economic growth through innovative applications for sustainable biofuels and biobased products. The Biotechnology Industry Organization announced today that U.S. Department of Energy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Cathy Zoi will address the afternoon plenary session on Monday June 28 at the 2010 World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology and BioProcessing. The event will take place June 27-30 at the Gaylord National Resort and Conference Center in Washington, D.C.
"We are thrilled to have Ms. Zoi join us at the 2010 World Congress to provide her insights into development of renewable energy and biobased products," said Jim Greenwood, president and CEO of BIO. "She brings with her a wealth of knowledge and a strong international record in this field that will be of great interest to our attendees."
Ms. Zoi was confirmed by the United States Senate in 2009 as Assistant Secretary for the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE). In this role, Ms. Zoi manages the U.S. Department of Energy's $2.3 billion applied science, research, development, and deployment portfolio, which promotes marketplace integration of renewable and environmentally sound energy technologies. Additionally, Ms. Zoi oversees EERE's $16.8 billion in funding under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. EERE is responsible for education, conservation, regulation, and efficient use of our nation's energy resources, including federal energy management, building codes, appliance standards, vehicle technologies, and the ENERGY STAR® program. EERE works to strengthen the United States' energy security, environmental quality, and economic vitality through public-private partnerships.
BIO President and CEO, Jim Greenwood, will give opening remarks at the session, titled, "How Can We Create a Viable Biofuels Value Chain?" Ms. Zoi will join a panel moderated by Brent Erickson, executive vice president, Industrial and Environmental Section (BIO). Other featured panelists include John McDonald, Vice President and CTO, Chevron, and Marcos Jank, President and CEO, União da Indústria de Cana-de-Açúcar (UNICA), Brazil.
