Curbell Plastics, Inc. Cited for Environmental Excellence

New York-based Company Honored by International Association of Plastics Distribution

Orchard Park, N.Y. – Orchard Park-based Curbell Plastics, Inc., one of the nation’s premier suppliers of plastic sheet, rod, tube, film, adhesives, sealants, and prototyping materials,  has recently received an Environmental Excellence Award by the International Association of Plastics Distribution (IAPD). Curbell Plastics was cited in the “Most Improved” category for its continued dedication to environmentally responsible practices.

Curbell Plastics was one of five industry companies recently honored at the IAPD’s Annual Convention held this month in Miami. The annual awards honor the accomplishments of companies in the plastics industry and showcase the many and varied ways that plastics companies are promoting and implementing recycling programs, using energy efficient practices and implementing sustainability programs. The IAPD is an industry organization that includes distributors, fabricators, manufacturers, and recyclers.

Curbell Plastics was noted for building on its already successful environmental program by targeting the areas of most waste first and then expanding on its success. This past year, the company replaced its heating and cooling system at its headquarters and added a computerized thermostatic network, reducing energy consumption by 61,000-kilowatt hours and reducing carbon emissions by 11,000 pounds annually. Curbell has also implemented more energy efficient lighting, resulting in a 20,000-kilowatt hour reduction, and it continues to recycle computers, office equipment, and other office waste.  All 16 Curbell Plastics locations throughout the U.S. participate in the environmental program, in addition to the company headquarters.

According to Mark Shriver, Director of Safety and Environmental Affairs, “Our commitment to sustainability has helped us significantly reduce waste, consumption and operating cost, whether it is in encouraging our employees to reduce their use of paper, partnering with neighboring businesses to create stronger recycling programs, or investing in energy saving systems. Our efforts prove that these practices are not only good for the environment, but also good for our company and our bottom line.”

Curbell, Inc. is the parent company of Curbell Plastics and has targeted environmental responsibility in all of its operations including Curbell Plastics and its sister company, Curbell Medical Products, Inc.  Curbell is a Federal Green Challenge participant, an EPA WasteWise partner and has reduced its solid waste by 90 percent while maintaining zero landfill status at its two largest facilities in Orchard Park.  The company has been nominated as a participant on the Leadership Consortium and Waste Management Subcommittee in support of Governor Cuomo’s “Cleaner, Greener New York” initiative, contributes to the development of the WNY Sustainable Business Roundtable and participates on the IAPD’s Environmental Committee.

Curbell Plastics, Inc. strategy of investing for the long term and focus on customer needs has lead the organization to grow from a small machine shop to one of the nation’s leading supplier of plastic materials serving commercial and industrial customers since 1942. Curbell not only supplies plastic materials in nearly every form for thousands of small local businesses, Fortune 500 companies, and government agencies but also provides innovative services, creative problem solving, and next-day delivery.  Curbell Plastics has ISO 9001:2008 certification for eight of their locations and corporate headquarters.
