Press release date: October 26, 2011

PHILADELPHIA, PA. - Outdoor exposure testing conducted over a three-year period demonstrates that semi-transparent deck stains may last longer than the traditional one- or two-year industry standard when formulated with AVANSE(TM) ST-410 Binder by Dow Coating Materials (DCM), a global business unit of The Dow Chemical Company. In addition to longevity, DCM exposure testing demonstrates outstanding erosion resistance, ultraviolet light (UV) protection and excellent long-term adhesion to treated pine decking.

"AVANSE ST-410 Binder is a game changer that enables formulators and consumers to rethink exterior semi-transparent stains," said Rusty Johnson, North America Field Marketing Manager for Dow Coating Materials, North America. "In addition to offering long-term durability against foot traffic, water, and erosion, semi-transparent stains made with AVANSE ST-410 Binder offer enhanced UV protection - it's like applying sunscreen to your deck," explained Greg Monaghan, technical group leader, Dow Coating Materials. "This technology can help formulators lengthen the reapplication cycle for exterior stains on residential decks."

Acrylics provide a durable backbone for semi-transparent stain formulations, and are generally recognized for outstanding erosion resistance compared with alternative binder materials. Taking this a step further, DCM engineered AVANSE ST-410 Binder as a multi-functional acrylic binder that stabilizes the iron oxide pigments necessary for long-term UV resistance. Another differentiating characteristic of AVANSE ST-410 Binder is outstanding adhesion to treated deck substrates, which results in fewer early failures on latewood grains.

Designed to meet stringent VOC and environmental standards, semi-transparent stains based on AVANSE ST-410 Technology do not require coalescent or heavy metal driers. Compared to other acrylic binders, AVANSE(TM) ST-410 Technology is also better at re-dissolving during application. The combination of morphology and particle stabilization maximizes the flow and lapping characteristics during application, while building early resistance properties upon drying. As a result, semi-transparent stains made with AVANSE ST-410 Binder are easy to apply and enhance the appearance of new or weathered wood with a long-lasting finish.
