On March 12, webinar titled "Bonding Difficult Substrates" will focus mostly on surface preparation techniques in combination with select adhesives to improve reliability of combining low surface energy or inert materials. Two-part class on March 17 and 19 is broken into 3 sections that will address wood structure, wood properties, and wood adhesion.

Webinar Description: Some metals and plastics are difficult to bond. This course will focus mostly on surface preparation techniques in combination with select adhesives to improve the reliability of combining low surface energy or inert materials. The course was developed for medical and electronics applications. Those anticipating using adhesives to bond special combinations of metals, plastics, or both will find this course the most useful.
About the Speaker: Dr. Ritter specializes in adhesives bonding systems and processes, relating to applications in the automotive, aerospace, general industrial, electronics and medical industries. Having over 25 years experience in industrial product R & D, he has presented papers at several industrial symposia and regularly leads industrial training forums in adhesives, polymeric materials, formulation, and composite materials. Dr. Ritter holds nine U.S. patents in areas of ceramics, high performance materials, adhesive materials and combining adhesives with welding processes. His current focus is on composites-to-metals bonding with adhesives, weld bonding of metal structures, and marine applications of structural adhesives.

Webinar Description: This course is divided into three sections: wood structure, wood properties and wood adhesion. In wood structure, participants will examine hardwoods and softwoods, the basic chemistry of wood polymers and the organization of wood polymers. Then, basic wood properties will be addressed. This will include a review of the mechanical properties, grain orientation and density effects of wood, the relationships between wood and moisture, the effects of heat and thermal degradation, and the influence of aqueous acids, bases and organic liquids on wood properties. Finally, wood adhesion will be studied by discussing the basic surface chemistry and liquid penetration into wood, bonding mechanisms, adhesive penetration and the aspects of wood-adhesive testing.
About the Speaker: Chip Frazier is the Thomas M. Brooks Professor of Wood Science and Forest Products at Virginia Tech. He is also the Director of the Wood-Based Composites Center, which is an industry funded consortium that sponsors graduate research at the University of British Columbia, the University of Maine, Oregon State University and Virginia Tech. Frazier started his career at Virginia Tech where he has focused on fundamental aspects of wood adhesion. He studies the properties of the wood/adhesive interface, thermosetting and thermoplastic wood adhesives, as well as wood coupling agents. He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in wood adhesion and also wood polymer science.
