Chicago, Ill.-APICS The Association for Operations Management, the global leader in supply chain and operations management education, certification, and affiliation, today released the third edition of the trusted and influential APICS Operations Management Body of Knowledge (OMBOK) Framework, which defines the scope of the field of operations and supply chain management and provides a dynamic resource for understanding the APICS body of knowledge.

The latest edition introduces two entirely new sections on the preeminent topics of sustainability and risk management, highlighting the emerging areas of corporate social responsibility, closed-loop manufacturing, and disruption risks.

"This new edition of the APICS OMBOK Framework helps raise awareness of pivotal issues in the field of operations and supply chain management," said F. Robert Jacobs, PhD, professor of operations and supply chain management at Indiana University and author of the new sections. "It is an invaluable tool for professionals to outline the knowledge they need to excel in their work every day."

The two all-new sections on sustainability and risk management were included to further strengthen knowledge on emerging topics in the field of operations and supply chain management. The first section on sustainability in the supply chain includes subsections on topics such as the triple bottom line, sustainable new product development, green six sigma, carbon footprint analyses, reverse logistics, and the United Nations Global Compact.

"APICS provides relevant information and enables professionals to excel in their fields," said APICS CEO Abe Eshkenazi, CSCP, CPA, CAE. "The third edition of the APICS OMBOK Framework is a key resource for the knowledge and skills that are at the heart of operations and supply chain management."

The section on risk management examines the critical need for risk mitigation tools and knowledge by industry professionals. It discusses the different types of risks inherent in supply chains; techniques to identify, assess, and mitigate risks; and risk mapping, or weighing the frequency of an event against the aggregate severity of the loss.
