Press release date: November 14, 2012

ABNT, the Brazilian member body to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), has submitted a proposal for a new International Standard on process management related to the field of research, development, and innovation (RD&I). As the U.S. member body to ISO, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) invites all interested stakeholders to submit comments on the proposal by Friday, January 4, 2013.

The proposed International Standard sets down requirements for a RD&I managements systems, providing stakeholders with methods to establish, maintain, and improve the consistency and efficiency of their RD&I-related work. According to the proposal, the standard – which would be overseen by a new ISO Project Committee (PC) – would include test methods, sampling criteria, safety requirements, and other guidance on RD&I activities that are intended to promote business sustainability and to make it easier for relevant groups to ensure the effectiveness and consistence of their RD&I activities. The proposed standard will be applicable to any organization carrying out RD&I work, regardless of size or location.

All comments on this proposal should be sent to Steven Cornish, ANSI senior director for international policy (isot@ansi.org). Feedback received by the January 4 deadline will be reviewed and compiled for the recommended ANSI position and comment, which will then be presented to the ANSI ISO Council for formal approval.

The full proposal filed by ABNT is available here.

ANSI has published an explanatory information document outlining the process used to develop U.S. positions on issues and activities under consideration by ISO and IEC. Click here to download the document.
