Press release date: September 8, 2008

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) will present its annual Legal Issues Forum on October 22, 2008, during the World Standards Week 2008 series of events. This year's forum will focus the attention of the standards community on recent updates and legal developments in the areas of the Internal Revenue Code, IPR and the Internet. Panelists from leading law firms, SDOs, corporations, and government agencies will address:

new IRS code changes that affect both not-for-profit organizations and their corporate board members;

the latest legal developments and best practices for email and the Internet, from wikis and blogs to accessibility issues; and

IPR issues affecting standards development, including several recent, important cases.

The updates are relevant for traditional standards developing organizations (SDOs) and consortia, as well as the representatives of industry and government that participate on standard-setting committees.

"From changes to IRS Form 990 to updates in the employment, intellectual property, and Internet arenas, organizations throughout the standardization community are faced with some new and different business challenges this year," said Patricia Griffin, ANSI vice president and general counsel. "I encourage committee members and the legal and financial representatives of standards developing bodies to take advantage of this learning opportunity."

Putting it all together: How the IRS, IPR, and the Internet impact the business of standard setting is scheduled for October 22, 2008, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center. For the forum agenda, click here.
