Nicholson Awarded Howard A. Hanson Dam Grouting Contract

PITTSBURGH, PA - July 30, 2009 - Nicholson was awarded the Howard A. Hanson Dam Right Abutment Interim Measure Seepage Barrier project by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Seattle District. Howard Hanson Dam is located about 50 miles southeast of Seattle.

Nicholson's work includes the installation of a 450-foot-long double-line grout curtain into the dam's right abutment. The grout curtain depth varies from 90-170 feet. The grout curtain will extend fifteen feet in to bedrock for the first 170 feet and in to a silt horizon for the remainder of the curtain length. The curtain will be comprised of high and low mobility, balanced and stable grout.

The project will also include the real-time collection of water pressure and grouting responses using the GROUT I.T. system, which measures, records and graphically displays pertinent grouting parameters in real time. The anticipated volume grout to be placed is 20,185 cubic feet. The work also requires the design and construction of a work surface near the crest of the earthen embankment to accomplish the embankment grouting and a storm water collection system to prevent runoff into the reservoir.
