Public Power and Major Environmental Group Team Up to Launch Initiative on Energy Efficiency



WASHINGTON, June 23 / / - The American Public Power Association (APPA) and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) announced today a joint initiative designed "to help American households and businesses take advantage of all cost-effective opportunities to improve the efficiency of electricity use." The initiative will unite APPA's 1,300 member utilities and NRDC's 1.2 million members and activists in new efforts across the United States to seize opportunities to get more work from less energy, including:

- Supporting cost-effective improvements in efficiency standards for
buildings and equipment;

- Developing and promoting rate-setting policies and programs designed
to achieve energy efficiency improvements while ensuring utilities'
financial integrity;

- Strengthening the nation's energy efficiency infrastructure, including
support for existing regional alliances and new university centers on
energy efficiency; and

- Helping APPA members pool resources to take advantage of industry-wide
best practices employing energy efficiency as a productive and
low-cost resource for publicly-owned electricity systems.
