BIO honors the CEO of the American Association for Cancer Research for leadership in cancer research and advocacy

2012 BIO International Convention BOSTON--The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) announced today that Margaret Foti, Ph.D., M.D. (h.c.), CEO of the American Association for Cancer Research, has been selected as the Honoree for the 2012 Biotech Humanitarian Award.

"Through her exceptional work as a cancer advocate and her devotion to team science, Dr. Foti epitomizes what we look for in a biotech humanitarian."

"BIO is honored to present Margaret Foti with the 2012 Biotech Humanitarian Award. Dr. Foti's tireless efforts to improve cancer research and build an enhanced network of cancer researchers through the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) have been instrumental in advancing the field and providing new hope to cancer patients and their families," said BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood. "Through her exceptional work as a cancer advocate and her devotion to team science, Dr. Foti epitomizes what we look for in a biotech humanitarian."

BIO established the Biotech Humanitarian Award in 2009 to recognize everyday heroes within the biotechnology community who have helped heal, fuel and feed the planet through their work.

Dr. Foti was selected as the 2012 Honoree in recognition of her leadership in the fight against cancer. During Dr. Foti's tenure as the CEO of AACR, the organization has developed a dynamic and vibrant membership of over 34,000 members.

These members include laboratory, translational and clinical researchers; population scientists; other health care professionals; and cancer advocates residing in more than 90 countries. AACR's vast membership has helped accelerate cancer research and identify areas for collaboration across the globe.

In 2008, Dr. Foti expanded the role of the AACR as a grant giving organization and scientific partner for Stand Up 2 Cancer, a national, translational cancer research initiative. Under Dr. Foti's direction, AACR has played a pivotal role in providing scientific leadership, peer review and grants administration and monitoring for Stand Up 2 Cancer. In addition, the AACR provides these leadership services to other organizations that seek to enhance their grant giving efforts through their affiliation with the AACR.

In addition to her Stand Up 2 Cancer leadership, Dr. Foti also contributes to numerous cancer organizations and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Friends of Cancer Research; Council Member for the European Association for Cancer Research; and Past President of the National Coalition for Cancer Research, the Society for Scholarly Publishing and the Council of Science Editors. She has received numerous awards and recognitions for her work in the U.S. and abroad, including three Honorary Doctorates in Medicine and Surgery.

H. Thomas Watkins, Chairman of BIO's Board of Directors and President and CEO of Human Genome Sciences said, "Dr. Foti is truly a champion in the fight against cancer. As a leader who is capable of bringing together researchers and advocates from around the world, she is truly changing the way that we research and treat cancer and her efforts today will have a direct impact for future generations to come."

Dr. Foti has served as CEO of the AACR since 1982. During her tenure, she has provided the corporate knowledge and continuity of leadership that has been crucial to the association's progress and meeting its mission to prevent and cure cancer. As a testament to her steadfast guidance, AACR recently published the AACR Cancer Progress Report 2011, which highlights the extraordinary progress that has been made in cancer research over the past 40 years since the signing of the National Cancer Act.

Dr. Foti was presented the Award during the June 20th Keynote Address at the 2012 BIO International Convention in Boston, MA. Dr. Foti was selected as the honoree by a distinguished panel of judges comprising leaders in science, advocacy and media. The judges evaluated nominations based on four criteria: impact on future generations, impact on contemporary society, contribution to the field of biotechnology and level of innovation exhibited.

"I would like to thank our impressive panel of judges for their time spent reviewing nominations and selecting such an outstanding recipient for the 2012 Biotech Humanitarian Award," added Greenwood.
