National Transportation Safety Board Washington, DC 20594 July 3, 2009 -
The National Transportation Safety Board's annual report, which provides a summary of accident investigations and safety recommendations in the past calendar year, was released to Congress. Along with investigations into 19 major accidents, 221 regional accidents, and 18 international aviation accidents, 2008 highlights include 34 major reports and accident briefs adopted, 129 safety recommendations issued, and 67 safety recommendations closed.

According to USDA's Economic Research Service report, released July 1, 2009, adoption of genetically engineered soybeans was 91% in 2009, cotton reached 88%, and corn climbed to 85%. Report features 3 tables, devoted to each, that cover 2000-09 by U.S. state. It also summarizes extent of adoption of herbicide-tolerant and insect-resistant crops since 1996. Sharon Bomer Lauritsen noted that in 2007, use of biotech crops equaled removal of 14.2 billion kg of CO2 from atmosphere.

Her testimony focused on how the DSW rule removes regulatory barriers that inhibit the recycling of manufacturing wastes while simultaneously providing an environmental benefit by reducing waste. Based on such points, Abrams urged the EPA to deny Sierra Club's petition.
