Manufacturing Optimism declines due to increased uncertainty.

According to NAM/IndustryWeek Survey of Manufacturers, manufacturing has been slowing over past few months. For second quarter in a row, majority of respondents identified unfavorable business climate as their primary challenge, up from 62.2% to 64%. Survey results showed that 46.4% of respondents identified rising energy and raw material costs as a top challenge. Number of respondents who are somewhat or very positive about their company's outlook dropped from 88% to 83%. Read More

Auto Composites Pioneer wins 2012 lifetime achievement award.

Named 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award winner by SPE®'s Automotive Division, Gary Lownsdale will be honored for his role leading automotive plastics and composites innovations at 42nd-annual Automotive Innovation Awards Gala. Lownsdale's career-long interests have resulted in significant contributions to field. Before retiring, Lownsdale says his last major challenge and R/D focus will be increasing production speeds and reducing costs so carbon composites can be used throughout automobile. Read More

CE Week, presented by Consumer Electronics Association, spanned more than 48,000 square feet of floor space and featured weeklong series of technology events across New York City, including CEA Line Shows, Digital Downtown Conference, Eureka Park Challenge, and Mobile Apps Showdown. IPC to hold inaugural Test and Inspection Online Symposium.

Scheduled for July 24, 2012, "IPC Test and Inspection Online Symposium: Technology Review and Case Studies to Improve Processes, Yields and Costs!" will provide test and inspection engineers with forum to learn solutions to issues that plague test processes, without having to leave the office. NAM Comments on Supreme Court's Affordable Care Act ruling.

NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons called Supreme Court's Affordable Care Act ruling "a dramatic moment in our nation's history" but added that work remains to be done in order to reduce rising health care costs. Citing 97% of manufacturers that offer "generous health benefits," Timmons called escalating health care costs biggest obstacle in continuing such practices. Cited alternatives included legal liability reform, purchasing insurance across state lines, and preventive medicine focus. Read More

NIST Co-Sponsored Manufacturing Day to focus on jobs and growth.

To be held October 5, 2012, Manufacturing Day will highlight importance of manufacturing to economy and availability of high-skill jobs in related fields. Event is initiative of Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP), part of NIST and FMA. Founders invite companies and organizations to hold open houses, public tours, and career workshops at their facilities.
