NAM makes statement on President's budget proposal.

According to NAM's Executive VP, Jay Timmons, manufacturers and their workers are disappointed that Obama Administration's budget proposal for fiscal year 2011 discourages job creation by adding new costs to business. President's budget calls for almost $500 billion in new taxes on businesses over next 10 years. Manufacturers support President's proposal for extending key international and investment tax provisions that expired last year and his recommendation to make R&D credit permanent. Read More

PCB Industry Results have been announced for December 2009.

December findings from IPC's monthly North American PCB Statistical Program indicated rigid PCB shipments down 3.4% but bookings up 27.3 from last year, while, respectively, down 23.2% and 18.1% year to date. Book-to-bill ratio for North American rigid PCB industry in December 2009 registered 1.05. Flexible circuit shipments and bookings, respectively, decreased 0.4% and 27.4% from last year as well as 1.1% and 4.9% year to date. North American flexible circuit book-to-bill ratio receded to 0.95. Read More

ASTM proposes new road and paving materials standard.

Proposed ASTM International standard, WK26816, Test Method for Overlay Test, will address cracking that happens during bituminous mixture design phase. It is being developed by Subcommittee D04.20 on Mechanical Tests of Bituminous Mixtures. Standard will improve test method with unified sample preparation procedure and will also address other variables within test. Primary users will be state highway agencies, paving contractors, and developers of technology associated with paving materials. Read More

AASHTO announces list of ready-to-go projects tops 9,800.

February 5, 2010

Valued at over $79 billion, ready-to-go projects will provide states with resources to put hundreds of thousands of people back to work. Infrastructure projects so far have created 250,000 direct jobs and hundreds of thousands of indirect jobs, according to House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. Since original December 2009 survey, House has approved Jobs for Main Street Act of 2010, which would provide $37 billion for transportation projects that could create or support 1.1 million jobs. In his statement, ELFA Interim President Ralph Petta commends Obama Administration for proposals related to business investment and tax incentives. Specifically, ELFA applauds proposal to enhance investment in new plant and equipment for all businesses by proposing extension of tax bonus depreciation through December 31, 2010. ASTM Standards Revision clarifies thickness tolerances for steel sheets.

February 4, 2010

ASTM International Committees A01 on Steel, Stainless Steel, and Related Alloys and A05 on Metallic-Coated Iron and Steel Products approved revisions to two ASTM standards that will clarify thickness tolerances for uncoated and coated steel sheet products. Committees A01 and A05 have moved 3/8-in. [10 mm tables from body of A568/A568M and A924/A924M to Supplementary Requirements sections, and 1 in. edge distance tables are now the default applicable thickness tolerances. Read More

PTDA Survey shows members are optimistic about 2010 sales.

February 4, 2010

Based on Member Forecast Survey conducted by Cleveland Research, 41% of PTDA members are forecasting year-over-year sales growth in 2010, 58% predict flat sales, and 1% anticipate decline in sales over 2009. With 75 respondents, survey shows most feel inventory levels are too high and that, on average, PTDA members anticipate 5% increase in sales over 2009. It predicts rebound in MRO demand and that automotive, heavy truck, construction equipment, and housing could show growth in 2010. Read More

AIA Statement addresses 2011 defense department budget.

Marion C. Blakey of AIA says Department of Defense (DOD) budget request and Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR) continue efforts to reform how DOD buys goods and services, and emphasizes creating stability in requirements and cost. Blakey also approves inclusion of discussion on industrial base in QDR, which acknowledges need to reform export control system. They demonstrated to car drivers how to share road safety with large trucks. ASTM Standard aids in identification of restricted substances.

Developed by Subcommittee F40.02 on Management Practices and Guides, proposed new standard, WK26792 is suited for manufacturers, buyers, and designers who deal with plastics and polymers. Proposed standard will allow users to determine whether products contain substances affected by European Union's Regulation on Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals, known as REACH, or the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act. Proposed ASTM Standard addresses kitchen cleaning products.

ASTM WK26967, Test Method for Evaluating Cleaning Performance of Products Intended for Use on Kitchen Surfaces Found in the Home, is being developed by Subcommittee D12.16 on Hard Surface Cleaning. Development is taking place following withdrawal of standard ASTM D4488, and, according to Toni Lynch, WK26967 will be more specific to kitchen surface cleaning. Lynch also says WK26967 task group will develop consumer-specific soils relevant to cleaning kitchen surfaces. Read More

Hydraulic Institute seeks reviewers for draft of updated ANSI/HI 1.4.

Under approval of ANSI, Hydraulic Institute is seeking qualified individuals in North America to participate in review process for draft of updated Standard ANSI/HI 1.4 Rotodynamic Pumps for Manuals Describing Installation, Operation, and Maintenance. Guideline applies to centrifugal and vertical pump types and is designed to identify standard format, which will be used when writing IOMs, along with topics that will be covered in each section when deemed appropriate for pump being addressed. AEM and Export-Import Bank begin pilot program for SMBs.

Small- and medium-sized companies with membership in AEM can now benefit from pilot program with Export-Import Bank of U.S. to increase exports. Program will focus on Working Capital Guarantee and Export Credit Insurance, but companies may also receive other Ex-Im Bank assistance. To qualify, companies must meet U.S. Small Business Administration definition of a small-medium business, produce goods in U.S., demonstrate 51% U.S. content for those goods, and have export deal in the works. BIO applauded President Obama's call in the State of the Union address to encourage American innovation and create clean energy jobs, by providing incentives for clean energy. According to report by Bio Economic Research Associates titled "U.S. Economic Impact of Advanced Biofuels Production: Perspectives to 2030," advanced biorefineries could create 29,000 new jobs and $5.5 billion in economic growth by 2012 and more than 800,000 new jobs throughout economy by 2022.
