ASTM publishes steel/welded wire reinforcement standard.

Press Release Summary:

Standard A1064/A1064M, Specification for Steel Wire and Welded Wire Reinforcement, Plain and Deformed, for Concrete, has been published by ASTM Committee A01. Under jurisdiction of Subcommittee A01.05, it is intended for applications from reinforcement for concrete pipe and various other concrete drainage products to slabs on ground, bridges, walls, and high-rise buildings. Standard combines information previously part of standards A82/A82M, A185/A185M, A497/A497M, and A496/A496M.

New ASTM Steel Wire and Welded Wire Reinforcement Standard Is Approved

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. - ASTM Committee A01 on Steel, Stainless Steel and Related Alloys has now published a versatile new standard, A1064/A1064M, Specification for Steel Wire and Welded Wire Reinforcement, Plain and Deformed, for Concrete.

The new standard is under the jurisdiction of Subcommittee A01.05 on Steel Reinforcement.

Ted Mize, P.E., senior engineer, Ivy Steel & Wire, and an A01.05 member, notes that ASTM A1064/A1064M will be used in several ways. "The applications range from reinforcement for concrete pipe and various other concrete drainage products to slabs on ground, bridges, walls and high-rise buildings," says Mize.

"Wire and welded wire reinforcement is considered mild steel reinforcement and is used in much the same way as rebar," explains Mize. "This standard will be helpful to the user because only one standard needs to be referenced in specifications where the use of wire or welded wire reinforcement is required."

ASTM A1064/A1064M will eliminate the need for multiple A01.05 standards that referred to each other. The new standard combines information previously contained in the following four existing A01.05 standards:

A82/A82M, Specification for Steel Wire, Plain, for Concrete Reinforcement;

A185/A185M, Specification for Steel Welded Wire Reinforcement, Plain, for Concrete;

A496/A496M, Specification for Steel Wire, Deformed, for Concrete Reinforcement; and,

A497/A497M, Specification for Steel Welded Wire Reinforcement, Deformed, for Concrete.

Subcommittee A01.05 welcomes participation in its work. "We are currently working on developing a different way to measure yield strength that more accurately represents the behavior of the material," says Mize. Participation from metallurgists and materials engineers would be especially helpful, according to Mize.
