John Horsley makes statement on use of federal highway funds.

According to John Horsley, AASHTO Executive Director, state transportation officials have achieved goal of obligating every dime of federal-aid highway funds that were made available last year under American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The more than 12,000 highway recovery projects are evidence that transportation investment pays off by providing good-paying jobs and long-lasting improvements. States can repeat this effort if Congress provides additional resources for highways and transit. Read More

NEMA White Paper details SSL dimming best practices.

A NEMA-published white paper, LSD 49-2010 Solid State Lighting for Incandescent Replacement-Best Practices for Dimming, provides recommendations for dimming and design of screw-based incandescent replacement solid state lighting (SSL) products. It encourages coordination among control, power supply, and LED module manufacturers to achieve desired performance and product harmonization throughout market. Read More

Two ASABE Agricultural Equipment Standards are being revised.

ASABE and AEM are working to revise ANSI/ASAE S279.14, Lighting and Marking of Agricultural Equipment on Highways. Possible additions may be to incorporate rotary beacons or strobe lights as well as LEDs on agricultural equipment. ASABE is also revising ANSI/ASAE S276.6, Slow Moving Vehicle Identification Emblem (SMV Emblem) to update testing requirements for backing materials used on SMV emblem. Read More

RIA/IESO Standard addresses soot and char in HVAC systems.

RIA and Indoor Environmental Standards Organization have completed development of procedural standard, 'Evaluation of HVAC interior surfaces to determine impact from fire-related particulate.' Purpose of standard is to evaluate whether fire-related residue has been deposited on HVAC interior surfaces. Char and soot were selected as indicators since both are byproducts of almost all fires. Standard provides specific inspection and sampling protocols and uses science to confirm their presence. Read More

NIST and NASA to jointly develop new climate satellites.

March 5, 2010

NIST and NASA have launched joint effort to gather enhanced climate data from spaceborne climate observation instruments planned for satellites under development. Climate Absolute Radiance and Refractivity Observatory (CLARREO) Mission includes fleet of satellites tentatively scheduled for launch later this decade that will gather data for long-term climate projections. NIST's role will focus on calibration of instruments aboard CLARREO satellites, as well as on accuracy that sensors must meet. Read More

Joseph Christenson, Director of Finance at Nonin Medical, Inc., was presented with 2010 Automated Imaging Achievement Award at AIA's 18th Annual Business Conference. As top leadership award for machine vision and imaging industry, it honors Christenson's industry leadership and contributions for over two decades. AIA President Jeffrey A. ASABE revises standard for testing biodiesel fuel.

ASABE has revised ASAE EP552.1, Reporting of Fuel Properties when Testing Diesel Engines with Alternative Fuels Derived from Plant Oils and Animal Fats. Originally developed in 1990s, document has been revised to reflect current practices and international standards, using input from experts in industry, academia, and public service. Standard covers how to report testing of alternative fuels derived from plant oils and their blends with petroleum diesel for use in diesel engines. Read More

EU Decision on Biotech Crops is applauded by BIO.

BIO approved of European Commission's announcement to authorize cultivation of biotech potato as well as commercialization of 3 varieties of biotech maize for food and feed uses as well as import and processing. IPC APEX EXPO(TM) pre-show registration is 15% higher than in 2009.

Pre-show registration for IPC APEX EXPO(TM), which takes place April 6-8, is 15% higher than 2009 and appears to be approaching 2008 levels. According to IPC President Denny McGuirk, these numbers indicate rebounding industry and "the need for people to get together, see new equipment, and catch up on the latest research." Trade Surplus shows value of US Free Trade Agreements.

US Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) have resulted in trade surplus for US manufactured goods for second year in a row. US manufactured goods exports to NAFTA and CAFTA as well as other FTAs exceeded imports by $21 billion in 2008 and extended their surplus to $26 billion in 2009. This two-year surplus of nearly $50 billion stands in contrast to what trade naysayers have been telling Congress, blaming trade agreements as reason for trade deficit. Read More

Transportation Officials address federal program shutdown.

State transportation officials called the shutdown of federal highway and transit programs "a bad situation" and said that it would only get worse. At news conference, leaders from across country spoke out on consequences such as lost reimbursement payments for highway projects to states.
