ASHRAE Celebrates National Engineers Week.

ASHRAE is a partner in National Engineers Week, which celebrates contributions engineering makes to society and encourages engineering career paths among young students by promoting pre-college literacy in math and science. Gordon Holness, who serves as ASHRAE President, expressed pride in being involved in this program and celebration. Sustainability Committee to develop green meetings standards.

ASTM Subcommittee E60.02 on Hospitality is currently addressing green meeting concerns via series of proposed standards. Once vetted and agreed upon by meetings industry, these standards will serve as guidelines and performance measurements for meeting planners and suppliers. Specific standards address evaluation/selection of transportation, accommodations, venue, and destinations; A/V equipment and communication supplies; as well as establishment of exhibits and on-site offices. Comments Made on revision of lease accounting standard.

ELFA Interim President Ralph Petta released a statement regarding proposed revisions to lease accounting standards by Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and International Accounting Standards Board (IASB). Given that few users have provided formal comments during development of accounting standards, Petta noted ELFA's review of user views will be submitted to FASB/IASB chairmen to help make proposed new lease accounting standard "the most useful and workable model possible." IPC Standard helps define how clean is clean.

IPC's cleaning standard, IPC-5704 defines recommended requirements for cleanliness of unpopulated single, double-sided, and multilayer printed boards. Standard provides hard specifications and requirements for maximum limits of ionic contamination using ion chromatography testing. In addition, IPC-5704 delivers industry guidance on cleanliness testing for both product acceptance and process control, verifying that all equipment and chemistries are stable. Read More

NAM says nuclear plant federal loan guarantee will create jobs.

Following announcement by President Obama and U.S. Department of Energy to issue federal loan guarantees for two new nuclear reactors, NAM President John Engler stated that Administration's actions will give much needed boost to U.S. manufacturing while creating thousands of high-paying jobs. Estimates show that adding a new nuclear plant can bring $500 million a year to economy, and employees at nuclear facility can earn an average of 36% more than average earnings in surrounding communities. ASABE Standard measures commingled grains in combine harvest.

Developed by ASABE, document ANSI/ASABE S598 determines percentage in load of harvested grains that are likely to be residue from crop previously harvested by same machine. Standard also recommends acceptable levels of commingled grains that can be expected in commodities harvested by combines that have been thoroughly cleaned and prepared. With standard, users can predict outcomes of combine clean-out and select appropriate equipment or procedures based on needs. Read More

STA 2010 Board of Directors members have been announced.

SCSI Trade Association (STA) announced elected Board of Directors for 2010. Re-elected as president was Harry Mason of LSI Corp, who will be serving as such for his ninth consecutive year. Also re-elected was Vice President Martin Czekalski of Seagate Technology, who will thusly serve for his eighth term. One new member, Greg McSorley of Amphenol - GCS, also joined the Board. Energy Efficiency Criteria proposed for ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1.

Measures to increase energy stringencies are being proposed for major sections of ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-2007, which provides minimum requirements for the energy-efficient design of buildings except low-rise residential buildings. Currently, 9 proposed addenda to standard are open for public review. Proposed addenda would establish revised lighting power densities, reduce lighting power allowances, set requirements for high albedo roofs, and address glazing products. Read More

PT/MC 2009 Sales show significant decline below 2008 levels.

According PTDA Market Outlook Report, U.S. and Canadian PT/MC manufacturers sales dropped by 1/4 in 2009 as compared to 2008. Following moderate growth rate of 3.8% in 2008, U.S. manufacturers saw 27.0% decrease in PT/MC product sales in 2009. Annualized sales-to-inventory ratio for 2009 rose from 9.7 at year-end 2008 to 10.8 at year-end in 2009. Canadian manufacturers' sales fared slightly better in 2009, with 24.7% decrease in sales in 2009, following 7.4% drop in 2008. Read More
