ELFA appoints William G. Sutton and Ralph Petta.

Appointed President of ELFA, Mr. Sutton served as interim President and CEO of the Association, Education and Business Institute, Inc. A former U.S. Navy Rear Admiral, Mr. Sutton previously served as Commerce Assistant Secretary of Manufacturing and Services after serving for 5 years as president of Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute. Ralph Petta will serve in newly created position of COO. Petta served as interim president since September 2009 and has been with association since 1987. Read More

NIST develops dimmer switch for superconducting circuit.

Scientists at NIST have developed first dimmer switch for a superconducting circuit linking quantum bit and quantum bus technologies. As described in forthcoming paper in Physical Review Letters, switch can reliably tune interaction strength or rate between qubit and quantum bus circuits from 100 MHz to nearly 0. This advance could enable researchers to flexibly control interactions between circuit elements in an intricate network as would be needed in a practical size quantum computer. Read More

U.S. EPA opens access to chemical information.

Released by EPA, ToxRefDB database allows scientists and interested public to search and download thousands of toxicity testing results on hundreds of chemicals. ToxRefDB captures 30 years and $2 billion of testing results. Those interested in chemical toxicity can query specific chemical and find all available public hazard, exposure, and risk-assessment data, as well as previously unpublished studies related to cancer, reproductive, and developmental toxicity. AIA names Assistant VP for Acquisition Policy.

AIA has appointed Susan K. Tonner as Assistant VP for Acquisition Policy. Previously senior director for Federal Public Policy at TechAmerica, Tonner brings more than 30 years of experience in government acquisition policy to AIA. She will present positions of AIA member companies on range of regulatory andlegislative issues, rules, policies, and procedures that affect federal acquisition and financial management of Defense Department, military services, and other government agencies. ISA and ANSI to introduce financial risk document to Congress.

On May 7, Internet Security Alliance and ANSI will brief members of Congress and their staff on new publication, "The Financial Management of Cyber Risk: An Implementation Framework for CFOs." Briefing will begin with video presentation and role play depicting dynamics of typical executive reaction to cybersecurity attack. BIO thanked Representatives Allyson Schwartz (D-PA), Mark Schauer (D-MI), and Brian Bilbray (R-CA) for introducing the Grow a Renewable Energy Economy Now - Jumpstart Other Biofuels (GREEN JOBS) Act of 2010, H.R. 5142. As executive VP for BIO's Industrial and Environmental Section, Brent Erickson said, "If enacted, this legislation would provide the consistent, sustained and diverse federal support necessary to enable rapid growth of a sustainable advanced biofuel industry." March 2010 PCB Industry Results show positive signs of growth.

March findings from IPC's monthly North American PCB Statistical Program showed rigid PCB shipments and bookings up 19.6% and 38.4%, respectively, in March 2010 from March 2009. Year to date, rigid PCB shipments were also up 9.2%, and bookings grew 31.9%. Flexible circuit shipments in March 2010 were down 1.3%, but bookings were up 18.9% compared to March 2009. Year to date, flexible circuit shipments were down 2.4% and bookings were up 7.1%. Read More

AASHTO Reports address U.S. transportation capacity needs.

AASHTO has released series of new reports, "Transportation Reboot: Restarting America's Most Essential Operating System," that state the case for increasing nation's transportation capacity. "Unlocking Gridlock" shows that U.S. is experiencing system overload, according to John Horsley, and capacity increases are needed in transit, rail, and highways. Urgent projects cited include Houston's U.S. 290 Corridor, I-509 freeway in southern California, and commuter rail links in Michigan. Read More

ESFI Applauds Legislation recently introduced to House.

ESFI applauds introduction of Federal Buildings Personnel Training Act of 2010 (HR 5112) in the House by Representatives Russ Carnahan and Judy Biggert. According to ESFI President Brett Brenner, it demonstrates federal government's commitment to monetary investment in energy-efficient technologies as well as creating environment that prioritizes building personnel safety. EPA issues report on U.S. climate change indicators.

Titled "Climate Change Indicators in the United States," EPA report looks at 24 key indicators that show how climate change impacts health and environment of nation's citizens. Between 1990-2008, there has been a 14% increase in greenhouse gas emissions in U.S. Seven of top 10 warmest years on record for continental U.S. have occurred since 1990, and 6 of 10 most active hurricane seasons have occurred since mid-1990s. From 1993-2008, sea level rose twice as fast as long-term trend. Read More

Biodiesel Board motions to intervene with API/NPRA RFS2 lawsuits.

In response to API and NPRA lawsuits regarding Renewable Fuels Standard, NBB CEO Joe Jobe said biodiesel industry will intervene on behalf of EPA in defense of renewable goals required by law. Jobe says that API and NPRA lawsuits lack merit and undermine renewable goals established by Congress. "NBB will vigorously defend both interests of U.S. biodiesel industry and common-sense premise that displacing petroleum with Advanced Biofuels like biodiesel is in nation's best interests," he said. IPC will hold The Impact of Updates to J-STD-001 on May 17 in Irvine, CA; May 19 in San Jose, CA; October 12 in Boston; and October 14 in Toronto, each to be followed by full-day sessions covering changes to IPC-A-610. The Impact of Updates to IPC-A-600 and IPC-6012 will be held June 8 in Irvine, CA; and June 10 in San Jose. US EPA Awards Over $1 Million for environmental innovation.

More than $1 million in grants was awarded to 14 college teams that participated in Sixth Annual National Sustainable Design Expo. Winners of EPA People, Prosperity, and the Planet (P3) awards developed sustainable projects and ideas that protect environment, encourage economic growth, and use natural resources more efficiently. Each winner received up to $75,000 to further develop design, implement it in field, or move it to marketplace. Read More
