SME to hold FABTECH 2010 at Georgia World Congress Center.

To be held in Atlanta, November 2-4, 2010, FABTECH 2010 is expected to draw 22,000 attendees and 1,000 exhibiting companies over more than 350,000 net sq ft of floor space. Event will feature nearly 2,000 pieces of equipment on show floor and over 500 new product debuts, along with 100 expert-led presentations. Finishing Technologies Pavilion, hosted by CCAI, will include liquid finishing, powder coating, curing, and plating technologies on display. Read More

Dean Elkins elected as chair to RIA's board of directors.

Dean Elkins, Senior General Manager of Motoman Inc., was selected as new chair of RIA's board of directors in January 2010. According to Elkins, he hopes "to proliferate the use of robots in emerging and growing markets" as well as re-energize RIA's trade shows and other industry events. Elkins also emphasized importance of vocational education and research to RIA. In closing, Elkins said he looks forward to new membership initiatives that demonstrate the value of RIA. Read More

NHA announces winners of Hydrogen Student Design Contest..

NHA announced that team from Missouri University of Science and Technology was declared Grand Prize winner, while teams from University of Waterloo and National University of Kyiv received Honorable Mention awards. For 2010 Contest, students were challenged to plan and design basic elements of hydrogen community. They were asked to design one scalable hydrogen fueling station; identify renewable hydrogen sources in community; and identify customers for early market hydrogen applications. Read More

Robot Orders post strong gains in first quarter of 2010.

According to RIA, North American robotics manufacturers saw new orders jump 16% in units and 30% in dollars in first quarter of 2010 compared to same quarter in 2009, with total of 3,069 robots valued at $208.1 million. Quarter was also 35% better in units and 45% ahead in dollars over last quarter of 2009. Nearly every major industry increased its purchases, but especially strong gains were seen in robot sales to semiconductor/electronics/photonics industries as well as food and consumer goods. NTSB Report examines US Airways 1549 Hudson River ditching.

Decisions and actions of flight crewmembers and overwater safety equipment saved lives during January 15, 2009, accident in which US Airways A320 jetliner bound for Charlotte was ditched into the Hudson River. At conclusion of the 15-month investigation, investigators said forward slide/rafts prevented 64 occupants from drowning. Report also notes that "bird strike hazards to commercial aircraft are not limited to any predictable scenario," and makes 35 safety recommendations in different areas. Read More

VA Senator Mark Herring honored as BIO Legislator of the Year.

BIO announced selection of Virginia State Senator Mark Herring of Leesberg as Legislator of the Year for 2009-2010. As a sponsor of Science and Technology Research Development and Commercialization Act, Senator Herring negotiated compromise that ensured the bill's passage. This year, Senator Herring sponsored and passed Virginia Innovation Investment Act, which offered targeted, long-term capital gains tax exclusion for Virginia bioscience investments. Read More

EPA Seeks Small Business Input on standards revesions..

US EPA invites small businesses to nominate representatives to participate in Small Business Advocacy Review Panel as agency develops fine particle emission limits for residential wood heaters and other burning devices. In the past, EPA selected panel members in consultation with US Small Business Administration (SBA) but did not invite small businesses to nominate representatives. EPA and SBA are now, however, seeking nominations directly from small businesses. Deadline is May 14. Read More

News Release Rescinded for non-chemical water device project.

After careful consideration, ASHRAE decided to rescind its April 7, 2010 press release relating to research project no. RP 1361, Biological Control in Cooling Towers Using Non-Chemical Water Treatment Devices. There have been numerous comments and questions, and ASHRAE Technical Committee, TC 3.6 Water Treatment, which sponsored and is responsible for said project, has not yet reviewed final report. It expects to complete review within next 30-60 days. Read More

UL Personnel Certification Program for solar photovoltaic (PV) system installers will be available beginning July 2010 through UL University.
