FAA establishes new Center of Excellence for general aviation.

The FAA has selected team of universities to lead new Air Transportation Center of Excellence for general aviation. Selected group is called the FAA Center of Excellence Partnership to Enhance General Aviation Safety, Accessibility and Sustainability (PEGASAS). Research and development efforts will cover broad spectrum of safety issues, including airport technology, propulsion and structures, airworthiness, flight safety, fire safety, human factors, system safety management, and weather. NTSB to offer training courses in October and November.

NTSB is offering courses in disaster response, post-accident communications, and accident investigation at its training center just outside Washington. Courses will include Transportation Disaster Response - Family Assistance; Transportation Disaster Response - Emergency Responders; Aircraft Accident Investigation Orientation; Managing Communications Following An Aircraft Accident or Incident; Cognitive Interviewing for Accident Investigators; and Investigating Human Fatigue Factors. Funding for Community Colleges enhances manufacturing education.

October 2, 2012

Over $175 million in funding, announced by U.S. Department of Labor, will enable community colleges to grow and enhance their manufacturing education and training programs. Part of $500 million 2012 Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) Grants Program awards, this funding will enable students to earn skills needed to advance in manufacturing jobs as well as help schools build quality, relevant manufacturing programs. TITANIUM 2012 Panel to examine manufacturing techniques.

TITANIUM 2012 will include Aerospace Materials and Processes speaker panel, which will examine titanium manufacturing techniques and alloy selection, both of which are critical for aerospace applications. Titanium Metals Corp. will sponsor panel, which will be moderated by Dr. Yoji Kosaka, senior manager, U.S. research, at TIMET's Henderson Technical Laboratory. Speakers will include representatives from Boeing, Dassault Aviation of France, Rolls Royce, Honeywell Aerospace, and Northrop Grumman. National Association of Water Companies (NAWC) announced that journalists Mark Halperin and John Heilemann, co-authors of Game Change: Obama and the Clintons, Palin and McCain, and the Race of a Lifetime, will deliver opening keynote address at 2012 NAWC Water Summit on October 8 at 8:45 am EDT. After discussing politics, infrastructure investment's role in economic growth, and impact of elections on pertinent water industry topics, authors will engage in Q-and-A with summit participants. ELFA's MLFI-25 shows growth of new business volume.

October 2, 2012

ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index (MLFI-25) shows overall new business volume for August 2012 at $6.9 billion, up 21% from same period in 2011 and up 5% from previous month. Year-to-date cumulative new business volume increased 16%, and receivables over 30 days decreased to 1.9%. Charge-offs were unchanged from previous month at 0.4% and down 33% percent compared to same period in 2011. Credit approvals decreased to 77.0% in August from 77.5% in July. Read More

Research Paper describes tool that enhances surgeon precision.

"Active Tremor Cancellation by a "Smart' Handheld Vitreoretinal Microsurgical Tool Using Swept Source Optical Coherence Tomography" was published in OSA's Optics Express. Paper describes SMART (Smart Micromanipulation Aided Robotic-surgical Tool) device, which combines Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) imaging technique as distance sensor with computer-controlled piezoelectric motors to actively stabilize surgical tool tip. This lets surgeons maneuver tool tip precisely and safely. Read More

IPC Releases PCB Industry Results for August 2012.

August 2012 findings from IPC's monthly North American PCB Statistical Program. For rigid PCBs and flexible circuits combined, industry shipments and bookings experienced 0% growth compared to August 2011. Year to date, combined industry shipments were down 4.6% and bookings were up 0.2%. Compared to previous month, combined industry shipments and bookings increased, respectively, 6.6% and 14.1%. Combined (rigid and flex) industry book-to-bill ratio decreased to parity at 1.00. Read More
