Jet Fuel Alternatives Development Collaboration welcomed by AIA.

AIA President and CEO Marion C. Blakey called FAA and USDA agreement on jet fuel alternatives development, "a welcome step forward," adding that "Alternative fuels are crucial to reach the environmental goals for aviation established by ICAO." Blakey went on to comment positively concerning the administration's alternative fuel development commitment. She said AIA looks forward to working with FAA, USDA, and commercial providers to bring about production of cost-effective biofuels. Read More

BIO abandons Leonardo sustainability talks.

Representatives from national and regional agriculture, food, and feed organizations withdrew from Leonardo Academy's sustainable agriculture standard setting initiative citing "fatal, systemic limitations and chronic biases" within Leonardo effort. Letter addressed to Michael Arny, Leonardo Academy president, was signed by 10 national agricultural-organization voting members on nearly 60-member Committee, and endorsed by 46 other agricultural organizations nationwide, including BIO. Through funding contract with Department of Energy, copies of I-P edition of ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1-2007, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, is being offered as free downloadable PDF for limited time. Standard has become basis for building codes, building design, and construction throughout United States, and making it available for free ensures that it penetrates marketplace and reaches owners, contractors, and design teams. SPE's Auto Division names 2010 Hall of Fame winner.

Automotive Division of SPE® selected 1985MY Chevrolet® Cavalier® sedan from General Motors Corporation as 2010 Hall of Fame winner of 40th annual Automotive Innovation Awards Competition. This vehicle was first to use front and rear thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) bumper fascias, and that application proliferated throughout North American vehicle production in addition to being adopted in Europe and Asia. Proposed Fuel Efficiency, GHG Standards apply to trucks, buses.

U.S. EPA and U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) announced first national standards to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and improve fuel efficiency of heavy-duty trucks and buses. In addition to projected reductions of ~250 million metric tons of GHG emissions and, project will save 500 million barrels of oil over lives of vehicles produced within first 5 years of implementation. EPA announces Lead Poisoning Prevention Week.

U.S. EPA is recognizing National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, October 24-30, with theme of Lead-Free Kids for a Healthy Future, to raise awareness of lead poisoning in children. For children, even low levels of exposure to lead can cause host of developmental effects such as learning disabilities, decreased intelligence, and speech, language, and behavioral problems. EPA recommends getting home tested if it was built before 1978, as well as getting children tested. Read More
