NIST Awards UMD $15 Million to support nanotechnology research.

NIST Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology will award 5-year cooperative agreement totaling $15 million to University of Maryland (UMD) to develop and implement Postdoctoral Researcher and Visiting Fellow Measurement Science and Engineering Program. This program will support development of nanotechnology by providing as many as 100 researchers with one- to two-year appointments at CNST. Positions are open to all qualified applicants. Read More

AAMA Official seeks revision to energy efficiency legislation.

Draft legislation of "Reduce Energy Bills at Home Act" seeks to modify existing .30/.30 tax credit criteria to selectively mirror ENERGY STAR standards, but reduces current 30%/$1,500 available credit to 10% with cap at $200. NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership announced $9.1 million in cooperative agreements for 22 projects designed to enhance global competitiveness of U.S. manufacturers. Projects address one or more of five areas MEP has identified as strategic growth areas. They include responding to evolving supply chains; accelerating adoption of new technology; implementing environmentally sustainable processes; establishing strong workforces for future; and encouraging cultures of continuous improvement. FAA Spaceport Grants will strengthen commercial space activities.

Awarded to 4 separate projects in Alaska, California, Florida, and New Mexico, Space Transportation Infrastructure Matching Grants will fund projects that develop and expand commercial space transportation infrastructure. FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt said this grant program underscores commitment towards making sure U.S. remains world leader in space development and exploration. Quarterly Business Index reveals distributor/manufacturer growth.

With 122 companies participating (55 distributors and 67 manufacturing firms), inaugural Quarterly Business Index shows expansion for transmission/motion control (PT/MC) industry in second quarter. Overall reading of distributor and manufacturer members revealed 77.0 reading; reading above 50 indicates growth. Conducted by PTDA and Cleveland Research Company, index tracks change in business activity, new orders, employment, supplier deliveries, inventories, prices, and backlog in PT/MC market. Read More

DIN Submits Proposal for standard on additive manufacturing.

DIN, German member body to ISO, submitted proposal to ISO for new standard on additive manufacturing - rapid technologies (rapid prototyping). As US member body to ISO, ANSI invites all interested stakeholders to submit comments on proposal by November 5, 2010. According to work item proposal, standard would cover principal considerations applicable to design, fabrication, and assessment of parts produced by additive fabrication. Read More

Subcommittee E07.01 on Radiology (X and Gamma) Method has approved 3 non-destructive standards: ASTM E2698, Practice for Radiological Examination Using Digital Detector Arrays; ASTM E2736, Guide for Digital Detector Array Radiology; and ASTM E2737, Practice for Digital Detector Array Performance Evaluation and Long-Term Stability. NAM urges Administration to lift offshore drilling moratorium.

According to NAM President John Engler, manufacturers are alarmed by comments made by Interior officials indicating that even once formal moratorium is lifted, it will take weeks and months for permits to be issued. Dragging out permitting process will force nation to rely even more on foreign producers and will discourage investment in new projects, stifling job creation. In short term, moratorium could cost 46,200 jobs and more than %2.7 billion in economic activity. Read More

ASTM creates subcommittee on nano-enabled consumer products.

ASTM International Committee E56 on Nanotechnology has created subcommittee E56.06 on Nano-Enabled Consumer Products, which will develop scientifically credible standards for identification, evaluation, and assessment of engineered nanomaterials in consumer products. Projects under consideration include standards for measurement and evaluation of silver in textiles and liquids, and standards for assessment of nanosilver exposure potential from use of textile and liquid consumer products. Ratification of UK/Australia Treaties welcomed by manufacturers.

In his statement, NAM VP of International Economic Affairs Frank Vargo welcomed Senate ratification of Defense Trade Cooperation Treaties with UK and Australia as well as both chambers' passage of legislation. EPA Awards Environmental Justice Grants totaling $1.9 million.

EPA has awarded $1.9 million in environmental justice grants to 76 non-profit organizations and local governments working on environmental justice issues nationwide. Grantee projects include trainings for local residents to increase recycling, avoiding heat stroke, improving indoor air quality, reducing carbon emissions through weatherization, and green jobs training programs. Current funding is largest amount in 1 yr for environmental justice grants in more than decade. Read More
