Demand for Lighting stagnates during second quarter of 2010.

During second quarter of 2010, NEMA's Lighting Systems Index dipped 0.3% on quarter-to-quarter basis. On year-over-year basis, index registered 5.3% gain versus 2Q 2009. However, since that quarter marked lowest reading ever recorded for LSI, rate of year-over-year growth indicates that lighting equipment demand remains at a very low level. Miniature lamps, large lamps, and fluorescent ballasts expanded on year-over-year basis while fixtures and emergency lighting systems posted sizable declines. Read More

Fluid Power Challenge introduces students to engineering.

Any middle school, university, or fluid power company, using online instructions, can run NFPA Fluid Power Challenge, which tasks eighth grade students with solving engineering problem using hydraulics and pneumatics. Student teams of 4 have to design and build fluid power mechanism and then compete against other teams. Online instructions include budget, timetable, and sample emails as well as detailed information for Challenge coordinators, facilitators, and judges. Read More

Committee Members Needed for louver testing standard review.

Volunteers are being sought to serve on AMCA 500 L Review Committee. Members would be expected to participate in drafting, review, and resolution of any and all comments on Standard 500-L, which establishes uniform laboratory test methods for louvers, until revised standard is approved by ANSI as American National Standard. Once technical committee is formed and approved by AMCA International Board of Directors, it is anticipated that work could be completed within 6 months. Read More

AMCA seeking volunteers to serve on AMCA 500-D Review Committee.

Standard 500-D establishes uniform laboratory test methods for dampers. Characteristics to be determined include, as appropriate, air leakage, pressure drop, dynamic closure, and operational torque. Committee members would be expected to participate in drafting, review, and resolution of any and all comments on standard until revised standard is approved by ANSI as an American National Standard. Annual Rocket Launch Challenge seeks student participants.

Registration for 2011 Team America Rocketry Challenge is open through November 30 for up to 750 student teams in grades 7-12 from any US school, home school, or non-profit youth organization. As catalyst for generating student interest in math and science, annual rocket contest challenges teams of 3-10 students to design and build one rocket that will climb to 750 ft with raw egg payload and stay aloft for 40-45 sec and return to Earth with egg intact. NIST continues to recognize ANSI as accreditor.

ANSI is pleased to announce that NIST has extended its recognition of ANSI as accreditor of Telecommunications Certification Bodies for an additional 2 years. ANSI's continued recognition as accreditor is granted under NIST-National Voluntary Conformity Assessment System Evaluation program, which helps federal agencies organize product certification and related activities for ensuring that products or processes comply with U.S. or foreign requirements included in trade agreements. NASA Equipment Demonstration to be held in Arizona desert.

NASA's Research and Technology Studies, or Desert RATS, will make its 13th trip to desert to test rovers, habitats, and robots that could be used in future exploration missions. Media day for tests will be held on September 15 and media must be pre-registered and have letter of assignment on company letterhead. AIA supports White House transportation investment.

AIA strongly supports President Obama's proposals for investment in nation's transportation infrastructure, particularly the effort to modernize nation's air traffic control system. Economic analyses show that federal investment in NextGen airborne infrastructure has potential to create more than 150,000 direct and indirect jobs in near term. AASHTO Official supports proposal for transportation investments.

John Horsley, Executive Director of AASHTO, says agency is supportive of President Obama's proposal to immediately invest $50 billion to rebuild roads, expand high speed rail, and rehabilitate airport runways. "If Congress wants to pass legislation investing in our transportation infrastructure, the states stand ready to put those dollars to work," said Horsley. AASHTO January 2010 survey of states showed 9,800 ready-to-go projects valued at nearly $80 billion. Read More

Proposed standard ASTM WK27973, Specification for Environmental Performance of Medical Equipment for Use on Fixed and Rotary-Wing Aircraft, addresses effect of medical equipment on aircraft and effect of aviation environment on medical equipment. Proposed standard will allow manufacturers to design safe medical equipment for the aeromedical environment.
