ASTM International announces new Proficiency Testing Program.

September 3, 2010

In 2011, ASTM will offer Proficiency Testing Program on Elemental Analyses of Thermoplastics by Wavelength Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry Utilizing Compression Molded Specimens. Program will utilize polyolefin samples and analysis according to ASTM D6247 or alternative XRF methods. Participants will receive 2 polyolefin resins plus test instructions for each test cycle. Upon completion, laboratories will electronically submit PTP data to ASTM to generate statistical summary reports. Read More

College Student Financial Aid comes via ASHRAE scholarships.

To reduce financial strain on engineering students around world, ASHRAE is awarding over $80,000 in scholarship money for 2010-2011 school year. Specific assistance packages include Reuben Trane Scholarship, valued at $10,000 and awarded over 2 years; Willis H. Carrier Scholarships, valued at $10,000 for one year; and Frank M. Coda, valued at $5,000 for one year. Additionally there are multiple one-year scholarships valued at $3,000. Read More

Next Generation Scientists join forces to support biodiesel.

Student scientists from Dartmouth College to Oregon State University are leading Next Generation Scientists for Biodiesel initiative. Campaign launched with 28 founding members signing on-line declaration of support for biodiesel, which in part proclaims that biodiesel from variety of feedstocks can meet contemporary needs for environmental stewardship, economic prosperity, and quality of life without compromising ability of future generations to meet these needs for themselves. FAA celebrates Baltimore Airport Recovery Act projects.

U.S. DOT and FAA highlighted $15 million in safety upgrades funded by American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that will ensure safe operation of aircraft at Baltimore Washington Intl. Thurgood Marshall Airport. When completed, reconstructed aircraft parking apron between Concourses C and D will allow for more efficient operations among larger aircraft and service vehicles. The Hydrogen Education Foundation announced residential fueling with hydrogen as contest theme for 2010-2011 Hydrogen Student Design Contest. Teams will be tasked with planning and designing residential hydrogen fueling system for home, apartment complex, dorm, or other single residential building. As part of entry, teams will develop technical design; conduct economic analysis; and develop business, marketing, and public education plans for their systems. Read More

Smart Grid Report explores IEC CIM and 61850 harmonization.

"Harmonizing the IEC Common Information Model (CIM) and 61850 - Key to Achieve Smart Grid Interoperability Objectives" describes harmonizing process for IEC CIM and 61850 standards via creation of unified information model that provides common set of semantics for use by CIM and 61850 standards. ANSI Members Collaborate to develop Smart Grid standard.

Two members and accredited standards developers of ANSI teamed up to jointly develop standard under national Smart Grid effort. Standard from ASHRAE and NEMA will provide common basis for electrical energy consumers to describe, manage, and communicate about electrical energy consumptions and forecasts. This standard - ASHRAE/NEMA Standard 201P, Facility Smart Grid Information Model - is just one way ANSI members are supporting efforts of Smart Grid Interoperability Panel. Read More

Hydraulic Institute (HI) released 2010 update of ANSI/HI 1.4 - 2010, American National Standard for Rotodynamic (Centrifugal) Pumps for Manuals Describing Installation, Operation and Maintenance - with more content as well as additional and updated graphics. According to HI's Gregg Romanyshyn, updated standard "establishes a convention that will provide IOM manuals that are consistent and will help pump users locate IOM information in their vendor manuals quickly and conveniently." NIST UV Source helps NASA measure origins of space weather.

With finely tuned spark of UV light, a physicist at NIST helped NASA scientists successfully position crucial UV sensor inside space-borne instrument to observe hidden layer of the Sun where violent space weather can originate. NIST's unique "sliding spark source," consisting of a pair of graphite electrodes with quartz surface in between, feeds UV light into NASA's Solar Ultraviolet Magnetograph Investigation instrument, which measures magnetic fields on the sun from space. ASABE to adopt international standard on hitch ring dimensions.

ASABE has initiated project to adopt nationally an international standard, ISO 21244:2008, Agricultural equipment - Mechanical connections between towed and towing vehicles - Implement hitch rings and attachment to tractor drawbars. Adoption will advance harmonization of national and international standards, facilitating manufacturing, safety advancements, and product marketing worldwide. Electroindustry Confidence wanes for second consecutive month.

Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American business conditions fell nearly 18 points in August. With this performance following decline of nearly 7 points in July, index has now fallen by more than 24 points in 2 months (70.4 in June to 46 currently). EBCI for future North American conditions posted its third consecutive decline, dropping to 54 in August from 57.7 in July. Read More

Polymeric Piping Task Group seeking members.

A meeting of the Nuclear Energy Standards Coordination Collaborative resulted in establishment of a new task group on polymeric piping. Forty-one stakeholders gathered in person and through teleconference to address areas of interest for NESCC and its constituents. Attendees agreed on formation of a group to address polymeric piping for nuclear power plants. Trucking Industry Mobility and Technology Coalition (TIMTC) will facilitate Truck IntelliDrive(SM) and Smart Roadside session at Technology and Maintenance Council's (TMC) 2010 Fall Meeting in Raleigh, NC on September 22. Through this session, motor carriers can provide U.S. DOT with direct feedback on onboard technology issues. A&WMA Clean Air Transport Rule Webinar to feature EPA experts.

A&WMA will host Urgent CAIR: EPA's New Clean Air Transport Rule (CATR) webinar on Friday, September 10 at 11:30am EST. Sam Napolitano and Richard Wayland of EPA will discuss CATR in depth with insight and instruction to participants, while Neal Fann will present information on projected benefits of CATR implementation. Calling for cuts to begin in 2012, CATR requires new emissions reductions of ozone precursors and fine particulate matter from fossil-fuel power plants. Read More
