ASTM Invites Papers for symposium on contaminated sediments.

Papers are invited for Fifth International Symposium on Contaminated Sediments: Restoration of the Aquatic Environment, which will be held May 23-25, 2012 in Montreal, Quebec City, Canada. To submit presentation, presenters/authors must submit 200-300 word preliminary abstract by December 15, 2010. It should include clear definition of objective and approach of work discussed, pointing out new material as well as sufficient details regarding results. Read More

ANSI announces Standards for Accessibility exhibition.

Part of 2010 U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day, the Standards for Accessibility Hill outreach event is being held in honor of the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Capitol Hill event will take place on Sept 24 and will feature exhibits from a number of standards developing organizations highlighting the role that standards play in achieving universal access for all populations. FOUNDATON fieldbus Specification v2010.1 includes guidance supporting development of fieldbus devices and host systems that employ advanced field diagnostics per NAMUR NE107 recommendation. It includes updates to CFF Specification and Function Block Specification to reflect changes implemented in Interoperability Test Kit, which standardizes how all fieldbus devices communicate their diagnostic data to process control and asset management systems. NAM Official speaks on plans for Texas Caterpillar plant.

Responding to Caterpillar's announcement that it will open a hydraulic excavator manufacturing facility in Victoria, TX, which will create hundreds of jobs, NAM's John Engler said, "Manufacturers continue to lead our economic recovery, and Caterpillar's announcement reinforces that." Producing 21% of global manufacturing wealth, U.S. is world's largest manufacturing economy and, added Engler, "Caterpillar's decision will only help preserve and build on our manufacturing footprint in the world." SPE Conference to feature keynote by McLaren Automotive manager.

Claudio Santoni, of McLaren Automotive, Ltd., will give luncheon keynote titled "The McLaren MP4-12C Carbon Fibre MonoCell," on September 15, 2010 at 10th annual ACCE. Presentation will cover McLaren's 176 lb carbon fiber-reinforced-plastic safety cell, or MonoCell, to be included in its MP4-12C supercar. MonoCell holds and protects passengers and responds to loads from front and rear aluminum subassemblies, which act as crash structures that can be unbolted and replaced in event of collision damage. ASHRAE encourages states to meet current building energy codes.

U.S. Department of Energy is seeking proposals to support activities related to adoption and implementation of most current building energy codes. Proposals must address activities to adopt target codes, which include ANSI/ASHRAE/IESNA Standard 90.1-2007, Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, training activities, or activities that advance state's level of compliance with state building codes. A total of $5 million is available to be awarded for up to 20 states. Read More

EPA Plan Addresses Chemicals in dyes, flame retardants, detergents.

August 19, 2010

US EPA released action plans today to address potential health risks of benzidine dyes, hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), and nonylphenol (NP)/nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs). Covered under Toxic Substances Control Act, plans identify actions that include adding HBCD and NP/NPE to Chemicals of Concern list; issuing new use rules; and, specifically for HBCD and benzidine dyes, imposing new reporting requirements on EPA's Toxic Release Inventory and potentially banning/limiting manufacture or use. NASA selects contractor for Wallops Island Protection Project.

August 18, 2010

NASA has selected U.S. Army Corp of Engineers in Norfolk, VA for the Launch Facilities Protection Project at agency's Wallops Flight Facility in Wallops Island, VA. The USACE will extend a seawall approximately 1,300 ft to the south of the existing seawall located on Wallops Island, and place approximately 3.2 million cubic yards of dredged sand along shoreline. Project is scheduled to begin in fall 2010 and total contract value is not to exceed 49.5 million. Read More

ANSI recognized by OSHA as approved crane operator accrediting body.

ANSI has been recognized as approved accreditor of crane operator certification programs by OSHA. Under new OSHA rule to address safety of cranes and derricks used in construction, all crane operator certification bodies must be accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting entity. OSHA has concluded that accredited third-party certification provides only reliable demonstration that crane operator has knowledge and skills needed for safe operation. Read More

ANSI accredits KEMA Registered Quality. .

ANSI announced that KEMA Registered Quality is the first certification body to be accredited under the Institute's pilot program for Superior Energy Performance (SEP), which aims to provide industrial plants with road map for achieving continual improvement in energy efficiency while maintaining competitiveness. Under terms of SEP Program, a third-party certification body assesses conformance of a manufacturing facility to SEP requirements for energy intensity improvement. Read More

ANSI partners with ACR for greenhouse gas accreditation program.

As part of its continuing commitment to enhance the accreditation program for greenhouse gas validation and/or verification bodies (V/VBs), ANSI has signed Memorandum of Understanding with American Carbon Registry (ACR). Through MoU, ACR and ANSI pledge to cooperate in ANSI accreditation program that evaluates conformance of V/VBs against ISO 14065, Greenhouse gases - Requirements for greenhouse gas validation and verification bodies for use in accreditation or other forms of recognition. ASTM Bicycle Standard covers frames for children's bikes.

ASTM F2843 - Specification for Condition 0 Bicycle Frames, developed by Subcommittee F08.10 on Bicycles, can be used to set strength requirements for condition 0 bicycle frames. Strength, endurance, and impact requirements for frames of these sidewalk bikes, or bikes designed for young children riding under adult supervision, will prove useful for manufacturers and designers. Adoption is expected to also provide working balance for safety, cost, and performance. Read More

ACCE Graduate Scholarship Winners were announced by SPE.

Benjamin Hang's work focuses on development and use of tape-laying machine for automated production of tailored layups of unidirectional, thermoplastic tape for use in compression or injection molding processes and other forming methods. Francesco Deleo's work deals with developing numerical guidelines for explicit FEA of composite structures undergoing crash events to improve material models used in codes. He also works on developing better material models for fabric-reinforced composites. Read More
