FABTECH Expo to Raise Funds for veteran charity organization.

FABTECH launched 2014 FABTECH Expo Cares campaign in connection with FABTECH 2014 Expo in Atlanta. Charitable fundraising effort aims to benefit U.S. military veterans and assist them in obtaining jobs within manufacturing sector. Specifically, this campaign seeks to raise funds in support of Workshops for Warriors, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to training, certifying, and placing veterans in manufacturing careers. FAA Proposes Civil Penalties for Hazardous Materials violations.

FAA proposes civil penalties ranging from $54,000 to $65,000 against 3 companies – Allied Technology, Linvin LLC, FedEx Corp – for allegedly violating Hazardous Materials Regulations. In each case, allegations comprise shipment of packages that were not declared to contain hazardous materials. Said materials offered were not properly classed, described, packaged, marked, labeled, or in proper condition for shipment under Hazardous Materials Regulations. Read More

FAA awards environmental grant to South Bend Airport.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx announced $2 million FAA grant to South Bend International Airport to reduce emissions and improve air quality by installing a geothermal heating and cooling system at the airport through FAA’s Voluntary Airport Low Emission program. New system will reduce airport’s natural gas operating needs by nearly 4 million cubic feet/year, resulting in estimated emission reductions of more than 140 tons of ozone over 20-year lifespan of system. NEMA White Paper covers lighting controls terminology.

NEMA has published NEMA LSD 64-2014 Lighting Controls Terminology, which was originally published in 2012, and was updated to clarify terminology related to daylight responsive controls. Goal of LSD 64 is for NEMA definitions to ultimately be used as definitive reference for codes, standards, and legislation. This will eliminate creation of new meanings for already defined terms, minimize misapplication of terminology, and eliminate need for customized glossaries and terminology sections. Read More

NEMA has published NEMA LSD 28-2014 Minimizing the Potential of Base Arcing Between Certain Wattage HID Lamps and Lampholders. Standard educates end users of high wattage HID lamps about lamp-bases and lampholders and recommends best practices for selection and maintenance. BIO highlights value of IP for animal biotechnology.

BIO will showcase series of unique sessions at this year's Livestock Biotech Summit, including a panel highlighting the value of intellectual property in animal biotechnology. EPA Announces Funding to create drinking water innovation centers.

EPA provided over $8 million to create 2 national centers for research and innovation in small to medium-sized drinking water systems: University of Colorado Boulder's Design of Risk Reducing, Innovative Implementable Small System Knowledge (DeRISK) Center, and University of Massachusetts Amherst's Water Innovation Network for Sustainable Small Systems (WINSSS) Center. Both will develop and test advanced, low-cost methods to reduce, control, and eliminate groups of water contaminants. SME announces changes within its media group.

Previously known as Manufacturing Engineering Media, SME’s media group has been renamed Advanced Manufacturing Media. Manufacturing Engineering magazine has also released its 2015 Media Kit with several portfolio changes. In 2015, there will be more emphasis on news and technical information about advanced manufacturing in North America. New York Company to receive funding for microgrid project.

General Electric Company’s Global Research has been selected to receive $1.2 million award by Department of Energy to develop enhanced microgrid control system by adding new capabilities, such as frequency regulation. In support of President Obama's Climate Action Plan and Administration’s commitment to improve national power grid resiliency, Energy Department announced more than $8 million for microgrid projects to help prepare for extreme weather events and electricity disruptions. Registration for Team America Rocketry Challenge now open.

Open for teams of 7–12th grade students, Team America Rocketry Challenge encourages students to pursue study and careers in science, technology, engineering, and math. This year's rules require teams to build and launch a rocket carrying a raw egg to 800 ft and return it to Earth uncracked within flight duration of 46–48 sec. A new requirement calls for rocket to separate during flight, safely returning motor and egg to ground detached from one another in separate segments of rocket. Read More
