AASHTO Executive Director calls for investment and tax reform.

According to John Horsley, executive director of AASHTO, Congress needs to take action this year to sustain federal-aid surface transportation program. Horsley, who retires Feb 1 after 14 years leading the national association, made his remarks during keynote address at Transportation Research Board's annual Chairman's Luncheon. Horsley called on Congress to enact additional economic stimulus through transportation investment and to reform taxes that support nation's highway and transit programs. Read More

SME Education Foundation names its 2013 Board of Directors.

SME Education Foundation announced its 2013 Board of Directors as well as collective commitment of industry partners and donors to STEM education. New members – Laser FANUC FA America product manager Elizabeth Kautzmann and Wheeling High School EdD and principal Lazaro J. Lopez – will serve 2-year terms starting January 1, 2013. ASTM Standard addresses calibration of nuclear density gauges.

Developed by Subcommittee D18.08, part of Committee D18 on Soil and Rock, ASTM D7759 provides guidance for calibration of nuclear density gauges, which are used to measure density, moisture content, and inner structure of material. Verification of gauges is necessary to indicate when mathematical relationship between in-place density reading and water mass per unit volumes indicated by gauge need to be adjusted so that calibration meets required level of measurement uncertainty. Taco van der Maten will serve on ASTM board of directors.

Taco van der Maten, product manager for XRF at PANalytical in Almelo, Netherlands, has been elected to 3-year term on ASTM International board of directors. ASTM International member since 2006, van der Maten is chairman of ASTM Committee F40 on Declarable Substances in Materials and also leads task group responsible for updating and maintaining ASTM F2617. Other roles he occupies include Committee D20 member and participant in creation of ASTM PTP on elemental analysis of thermoplastics. Read More

Printed Board Standard provides design basics.

At 170 pages, IPC-2221B, Generic Standard on Printed Board Design, provides basis for design of all types of printed boards and addresses such areas as testing, via protection, test coupon designs, and surface finishes. IPC technical project manager John Perry said included information can "help designers make decisions between surface finish alternatives" and added that descriptive data is augmented by table to facilitate comparison of traits between various surface finishes. BIO announces presenting companies for BIO Conference.

BIO announced initial selection of presenting companies for the 15th Annual BIO CEO & Investor Conference to be held February 11-12, 2013 in New York City. All presenting companies are hand-selected for event, and consist of both private companies and mid-to-large cap established public companies from around the globe. EPA Official to keynote at ASC Spring Convention.

ASC announces that Jim Jones, Deputy Assistant Administrator of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention at the U.S. EPA will speak at the upcoming ASC Spring Convention being held April 21-23, 2013 at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta, GA. Mr. Jones will share the EPA’s approach to chemicals management and pollution prevention, an area he oversees as part of the senior leadership team for the EPA, during a luncheon keynote to be held on Tuesday, April 23.
