Consumers Energy to install pollution control technology.

September 22, 2014

In settlement with U.S., Consumers Energy, a subsidiary of CMS Energy Corporation, has agreed to install pollution control technology, continue operating existing pollution controls, and comply with emission rates to reduce harmful air pollution from 5 coal-fired power plants located in West Olive, Essexville, Muskegon, and Luna Pier, MI. Settlement will resolve claims that company violated Clean Air Act by modifying facilities in way that caused release of excess sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide. Read More

EPA announces competitive cooperative agreements.

EPA announced competitive cooperative agreements with 12 community-based organizations working to address environmental justice issues nationwide. Environmental Justice Collaborative Problem-Solving Cooperative Agreement Program provides funding for non-profit and tribal organizations to partner with stakeholders from across industry, government, and academia to develop and implement solutions that significantly address environmental and/or public health issues in American communities. PAC (Protection, Automation, and Control) World Conference will take place in Raleigh, NC from September 23–25, 2014, and EPRI will be participating in several technical sessions. Specifically, EPRI research will be featured in "Setting-less Dynamic State Estimation Based Protection" on September 23 and "A Study of Testing and Maintenance Requirements and Approaches for Protection and Control Systems in IEC 61850 Substations" on September 25. EPA announces new actions to curb potent greenhouse gases.

EPA announced 3 new actions that will help support transition to climate-friendly alternatives to hydrofluorocarbons. They include: listing additional fluorinated and non-fluorinated chemicals as acceptable alternatives; identifying refrigerant management options to reduce HFC emissions from air conditioning and refrigeration equipment; and organizing with stakeholder engagement a series of sector-specific workshops on seeking transitions away from high global warming potential HFCs. EPA adds 5 hazardous waste sites to National Priorities List.

September 19, 2014

EPA is adding 5 hazardous waste sites that pose risks to human health and the environment to the National Priorities List of Superfund sites. They are located in Elkhart, IN; Houma, LA; Newark, NJ; Harleysville, PA; and Bennington VT. In addition, agency is proposing to add 3 additional sites to the list. These include Birmingham AL; Kokomo, IN; and Gibraltar, MI. Superfund program investigates and cleans up the most complex, uncontrolled or abandoned hazardous waste sites in the country. Read More

ASABE Revises combine and grain harvesting terminology standard.

Revision initiated by American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) to ANSI/ASAE S343.3, Terminology for Combines and Grain Harvesting, aims to align terminology with currently used practices. Last updated in 1990, standard contains terminology pertinent to grain combine design and performance. Overall, standard helps improve communication among engineers and researchers and provides basis for comparative listing of machine specifications. Read More

IPC Comments RAMI Act Passage by U.S. House of Representatives.

On behalf of IPC and its U.S. member companies, IPC president and CEO John Mitchell applauded U.S. House of Representatives for working in bipartisan manner to pass H.R. 2996 (Revitalize American Manufacturing and Innovation (RAMI) Act). Mitchell also urged Senate to take similar action and pass its version of said bill "before Congress adjourns for the year." FAA Proposes Civil Penalty against Gulfstream Aerospace Corp.

FAA proposes $425,000 civil penalty against Gulfstream Aerospace Corp for failing to comply with Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR). Inspection determined some mechanics did not complete required training within established time limits in FAA-approved training manual and missed multiple training deadlines. Also, inspectors could not determine whether some employees completed training or whether records were inaccurate. Allegedly mechanics maintained aircraft without required training. Read More

EPA Settles with DuPont over FIFRA violations, tree deaths/damage.

September 18, 2014

U.S. EPA announced settlement with E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company (DuPont) for alleged violations of Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). DuPont will pay $1,853,000 to resolve allegations regarding its failure to submit reports to EPA about potential adverse effects of Imprelis herbicide and selling said product with labeling that did not ensure its safe use. Results included 7,000+ reports of damage or death of trees (primarily Norway spruce and white pine). Read More

NTSB Releases Agenda for flight data and locator forum.

NTSB released preliminary agenda for flight data recorder and aircraft locator technology forum. To be held in Washington, D.C. on October 7, Emerging Flight Data and Locator Technology will focus on highlighting currently effective technologies, exploring technologies in development, and determining what policy/industry/technological impediments need to be addressed. AMT Names CCPIT Machinery as exclusive IMTS sales agent in China.

AMT appointed China Council for Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) Machinery Sub-Council as exclusive sales agent of IMTS – The International Manufacturing Technology Show to Chinese companies, beginning on October 14, 2015, for IMTS 2016. This will consolidate displays from Chinese companies into one area at IMTS and create one point of contact for them to simplify trade show process. FAA Proposes Civil Penalty against American Eagle Airlines.

September 17, 2014

FAA proposes $60,000 civil penalty against American Eagle Airlines, Inc. for failing to follow approved aircraft de-icing procedures for certain flights out of Sioux Falls, SD. Allegedly on 6 days in November and December 2013, contractor Worldwide Flight Services let 5 employees, who did not have proper training or qualifications either, apply de-icing fluid on 12 aircraft operated by American Eagle. FAA alleges airline operated airplanes on passenger flights after said application. Read More

Fluensulfone Offers Alternative to restricted-use soil fumigants.

September 17, 2014

U.S. EPA is registering new active ingredient, fluensulfone, which consists of non-fumigant nematicide that provides lower-risk chemical control of nematodes than methyl bromide and other Restricted Use soil fumigants. Intended for pre-plant, bare-soil application on fruiting vegetables and cucurbits, fluensulfone meets applicable safety requirements. With its evaluation, EPA confirms that fluensulfone, when used in accordance with newly approved label, meets safety requirements. Read More

FABTECH launched 2014 FABTECH Expo Cares campaign in connection with FABTECH 2014 Expo in Atlanta. Charitable fundraising effort aims to benefit U.S. military veterans and assist them in obtaining jobs within manufacturing sector. Specifically, this campaign seeks to raise funds in support of Workshops for Warriors, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to training, certifying, and placing veterans in manufacturing careers. FAA proposes civil penalties ranging from $54,000 to $65,000 against 3 companies – Allied Technology, Linvin LLC, FedEx Corp – for allegedly violating Hazardous Materials Regulations. In each case, allegations comprise shipment of packages that were not declared to contain hazardous materials. Said materials offered were not properly classed, described, packaged, marked, labeled, or in proper condition for shipment under Hazardous Materials Regulations. Read More
