EPA is recognizing landmark green chemistry technologies that turn climate risk into business opportunities, spurring innovation and economic development. Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards are presented in 5 categories: academic, small business, greener synthetic pathways, greener reaction conditions, and designing greener chemicals. BIO congratulates Abengoa Bioenergy on grand opening.

BIO congratulates member company Abengoa Bioenergy on opening its 25-million gallon per year cellulosic ethanol biorefinery in Hugoton, Kansas. According to BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood, new cellulosic biorefinery is the realization of nearly a decade of research and development and billions of dollars in investment and is the second commercial scale cellulosic biofuel plant in as many months. BIO Calls for Papers for industrial biotechnology conference.

BIO seeks biotechnology, chemical, and agricultural industries leaders to submit proposals and individual papers for 2015 World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology, which will be held July 19–22, 2015 in Montréal, Canada. Submissions period is open, and deadline is January 15, 2015. Solazyme, Inc. and Amyris receive awards.

October 24, 2014

Amyris and Solazyme, Inc. received awards in the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge, which recognizes industrial biotechnology’s contribution to reducing pollution at the source. Amyris received the Small Business Award for its design of farnesene, a hydrocarbon building block that can be converted into a renewable, drop-in diesel or jet fuel. Solazyme received the Greener Synthetic Pathways Award for oils produced through microalgae fermentation. Read More

Under settlement agreement with United States, ATP Infrastructure Partners, LP will pay $1 million civil penalty and perform corrective measures to resolve Clean Water Act and the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act (OCSLA) claims. BSEE inspection of ATP Innovator oil and gas production platform in 2012 revealed alleged unlawful oil discharges and piping configuration that routed unpermitted chemical dispersant into wastewater discharge pipe to mask excess oil being discharged into ocean. ASTM Standard covers test method for pigment loss on ignition.

October 23, 2014

Proposed standard, ASTM WK46877, Test Method for Pigment Loss on Ignition, will provide definitive instructions for conducting this common test. Manufacturers will use the results of testing as a means for product validation. Test will also be used to determine both the acceptable and detrimental levels of water for different types of pigments. Standard is being developed by Subcommittee D01.31 on Pigment Specifications. EPA Announces Decision to register Enlist Duo herbicide.

EPA is registering Enlist Duo in 6 states with first-time ever restrictions for management of resistant weeds in corn and soybeans genetically engineered to tolerate 2,4-D and glyphosate. Assessments confirm uses meet safety standards for pesticide registration and, as approved, will be protective of public, agricultural workers, and non-target species. EPA will be accepting comments until November 14, 2014 on whether to register Enlist Duo in 10 more states. EPA Announces P3 Winners and their environmental solutions.

U.S. EPA will provide up to $15,000 for each of 42 student teams pursuing projects that deliver sustainable, alternative approaches to address environmental challenges as part of EPA’s People, Prosperity, and the Planet (P3) program. Since 2004, P3 Program has provided funding to student teams in all 50 states and Puerto Rico. “Each year, the projects and designs created by the P3 teams surpass expectations,” said EPA's Lek Kadeli.
