Multihazard Mitigation Council issues call for members.

Members are being sought for newly reconstituted Multihazard Mitigation Council (MMC), which is tasked with promoting increased all-hazard (man-caused and natural) disaster resilience in homes and commercial buildings. MMC will provide forum for disaster professionals to exchange information on emerging trends in building technology and federal policy as well as address building systems and software applications that play critical roles in disaster resilience and sustainability. NIST posts latest adjustments to fundamental figures.

NIST has posted latest internationally recommended values of the fundamental constants of nature, which are adjusted every 4 years in response to scientific measurements and advances. Values arrive on the verge of a worldwide vote this fall on a plan to redefine most basic units in International System of Units, such as kilogram and ampere. They are determined by Committee on Data for Science and Technology Task Group on Fundamental Constants, an international group that includes NIST members. Read More

ASTM Committee honors Mical C. Renz with Award of Merit.

ASTM International Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants has recognized the extraordinary contributions of Mical C. Renz, president of Dixie Services Inc. in Galena Park, TX, with the ASTM Award of Merit. A graduate of the University of Kansas and a member of ASTM International for more than 30 years, Renz founded Dixie Services in 1977, which specializes in chemical/physical analysis and testing for the petroleum, chemical, and marine transportation industries. NASA begins commercial partnership with United Launch Alliance.

Through unfunded Space Act Agreement, United Launch Alliance will provide technical information to NASA about Atlas V, a flight-proven expendable launch vehicle. NASA will share its human spaceflight experience with ULA to advance crew transportation system capabilities and the draft human certification requirements. ULA will provide NASA with feedback about those requirements, including input on technical feasibility and cost effectiveness of NASA's proposed certification approach. Read More

ASHRAE supports funding for building survey.

ASHRAE received Congressional support from co-chairs of the High-Performance Buildings Congressional Caucus regarding Society's call to federal government to resume work on 2011 Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey. In letter submitted to Congressional Record, ASHRAE stated that if funding is not provided, government and industry will be forced to rely on data that is nearly a decade old, resulting in potential missed opportunities to increase building efficiency. ZigBee® Alliance announced that Smart Energy 2.0 draft 0.7 is available for public review and comment. Resulting IP-based energy management solution will be capable of running on both wired and wireless communication protocols. Simultaneously, Alliance will collect comments from various key external stakeholders as well as public at large. NAM Calls Export Control Framework a welcome step forward.

In his statement that followed White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley's announcement on additional changes to export control system, NAM VP of International Economic Affairs Frank Vargo said "Manufacturers are pleased that the Administration is taking this important step in reforming the export control system and taking our recommendations into account." New draft document, Privacy Control Catalog, addresses challenge of maintaining confidentiality and integrity of citizens' personally identifiable information given increasing dependency on information systems, cloud computing, smart grid, and mobile computing. BIO says biofuels tax compromise is a good first step.

BIO has sent a letter to Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), and John Thune (R-S.D.) thanking them for supportive, stable policies for advanced biofuels in the announced deal on immediate repeal of the Volumetric Ethanol Excise Tax Credit. However, BIO is concerned that the inclusion of annual caps on the cellulosic production tax credit will result in additional investor uncertainty that could limit effectiveness of program in attracting project financing.
