Biotech Leader Testifies on SBIR/STTR renewal.

Senate is considering SBIR/STTR Reauthorization Act of 2011 (S.493), which would restore eligibility of small biotechnology companies that receive funding from venture capital to compete for Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grants. Jim Greenwood of BIO said this "would help level the playing field for all small biotechnology firms so that they can continue working on bringing innovative medical technologies and treatments to market." Machine Vision Market grew 54% in North America in 2010.

According to figures released by Automated Imaging Association (AIA), sales of machine vision components and systems in North America increased to nearly $1.8 billion in 2010. AIA Quarterly Machine Vision Sales Tracking Report recorded sales growth in all major machine vision supplier markets, including cameras, lighting, optics, imaging boards, software, smart cameras. AMT Pavilion to showcase technology at FEIMAFE 2011.

AMT announced that it will feature its USA Pavilion at FEIMAFE 2011, which will take place from May 23-28 at Anhembi Park Exhibition Hall in São Paulo, Brazil. Featuring 19 U.S. exhibitors, pavilion will showcase technology including grinding, waterjet cutting, tooling, turning and milling, and forming. NIST and ASTM help fight explosives terrorism.

Developed by NIST in cooperation with ASTM International, test material enables users of trace-explosive detectors to evaluate their performance. NIST Standard Reference Material 2906 includes 4 ampoules each of 3 explosives and a blank along with dropper bottle for each. Under test protocol, users sequentially apply drop of explosive solution and solvent blank to swipes. Solvents are allowed to evaporate, and instrument is tested. RIA recognizes Steven Bingham with water loss certification.

During its induction and awards ceremony at recent convention in Colorado Springs, CO, RIA recognized Steven Bingham of Dow Columbia with Water Loss SpecialistSM certification. Certification emphasizes high levels of professionalism and training in water damage, drying and restoration, microbial remediation, and health and safety. Achieving status requires completion of course of study, passing score of 80% or higher on exam, and submission of formal report and research paper. Read More

RIA Restoration Certification awarded to 9 professionals.

RIA has awarded Certified Restorer® (CR) certification to nine restoration professionals, at its 66th Annual Convention and Exhibition in Colorado Springs, CO. Professionals who achieve CR status, which is highest certification awarded in cleaning and restoration industry, must complete specified educational requirements, as well as author formal paper or report on approved professional subject. NAM applauds Senate vote to repeal 1099 reporting requirement.

According to Aric Newhouse, NAM Senior VP for Policy and Government Relations, the 1099 reporting requirement is a burdensome and costly administrative process forcing manufacturers to spend more time filing unnecessary paperwork than providing goods and services. Manufacturers urge the President to sign H.R. 4, the Small Business Paperwork Mandate Elimination Act into law quickly, which will remove financial burden on manufacturers and allow them to help create jobs. Symposium addresses effects of radiation on nuclear materials.

Scheduled for June 15-17, 25th Symposium on Effects of Radiation on Nuclear Materials will provide forum for exchange of ideas on recent research results on radiation effects in the materials for nuclear fission and fusion applications. There will be special emphasis on understanding gained from combinations of state-of-the art experiments and modeling. BIO has hired Sarah Thornton as director of biofuels and biomass policy and Miguel Suazo as manager of policy within the Industrial and Environmental Section. Sarah Thornton is an attorney and former associate at Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck in Washington, D.C., where she served as senior policy advisor to Advanced Biofuels Association. A graduate of the University of New Mexico School of Law, Miguel Suazo served as Energy and Environment Associate at Wellford Energy in Washington D.C. Read More

Year End 2010 Industrial Laser Shipments up 37% from 2009.

According to AMT's Laser Market Data Survey, shipments of industrial laser equipment and systems in 2010 are reported at $356.2 million. Unit sales jumped 44.9% for total of 1,210 units. CO2 lasers accounted for 88.5% of the value of shipments, which is virtually unchanged since 2009. Compiled from 19 manufacturers and distributors, report also shows number of lasers configured as full systems accounted for the same share of shipments as in 2008 after spike in 2009, with value of $309.2 million. NREL Helps U.S. Army meet net zero-energy goals.

NREL is partnering with U.S. Army to jump start "Army Vision for Net Zero" program. At U.S. Army's request, NREL created application for Net Zero Installation Energy program. NREL team is currently evaluating 60+ applications from installations nation wide. Net zero energy attracted most applications, with 53 installation expressing interest, 23 installations signed up for Net Zero Water, and 24 for Net Zero Waste, and 14 interested in all three. Monitoring of Atomic-Microscope Probes adjusts for wear.

NIST scientists have developed way to measure wear and degradation of microscopic probes used to study nanoscale structures in situ. This contact resonance force microscopy technique, developed by Jason Killgore, can accelerate and improve accuracy of precise and delicate nanoscale measurements performed via atomic force microscopy (AFM). While instrument is in use, monitoring of AFM sensor tip's resonant frequency enables measure size of AFM tip, as it works, in 1/10 nm increments. Read More

NIST held groundbreaking ceremony for 3 new facilities funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Designed to produce as much energy as it consumes over 1 year, Net-Zero Energy Residential Test Facility will serve as testbed for home-scale energy technologies. Expanded National Fire Research Laboratory will test full-scale structures under realistic fire conditions, and installation of more than 2,500 solar energy modules will supply electricity to NIST campus. AMCA revised its publication 11-03, to Certified Ratings Program Operating Manual - AMCA 11-03 (R2008) (Rev.1/11). These January 2011 revisions specify units of measurement for catalogs, proper check test comparisons, as well as additional CRP-M details. Used in conjunction with companion documents as applicable, manual provides procedure for verification of manufacturer's performance ratings on regular schedule by check testing certified product line in AMCA International Laboratory. Secondary Uses for Li-Ion EV Batteries explored by NREL team.

National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), in partnership with industry-academia team led by California Center for Sustainable Energy (CCSE), aims to give batteries from electric drive vehicles (EV) second life. Searching for best possible second-use strategies, project will begin with technical and economic analysis addressing all aspects of battery lifecycle. On March 28, BIO hosted U.S./China Biotechnology Examiner Workshop with U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and China's State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO). Workshop, which was organized by BIO for SIPO examiners, focused on biotechnology patenting and encouraged bilateral cooperation between SIPO and USPTO.
