Test Standard focuses on lighting control/switching devices.

NEMA 410-2011, Performance Testing for Lighting Controls and Switching Devices with Electronic Drivers and Discharge Ballasts, provides guidance for design and testing of lighting controls and switching devices to be used with electronic drivers, discharge ballasts, and self-ballasted lamps. Used to help establish and verify compatibility, standard has been expanded to encompass additional types of lighting technology as well as numerous figures and test circuit diagrams and designs. ELFA releases Monthly Leasing and Finance Index for April.

According to ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index, overall new business volume for April was $5.1 billion, up 11% compared to same period in 2010. Compared against March volume, April volume decreased 18%. Receivables over 30 days decreased to 3.3% in April from 3.5% in March, and declined by 9% compared to same period in 2010. Charge-offs also decreased, from 1.3 % in March to 0.8 % in April. New credit application approvals increased slightly to 76% in April from revised 75% in March. Read More

With completion and distribution of its structural steel tubing Certified Producer Program Procedural Guide, STINA announced its official launch of industry-wide Hollow Structural Section (HSS) product certification program. STINA Certified Producer Program provides assurance that HSS, identified via awarded Certified Producer's Mark, has been manufactured by producers who meet nationally recognized manufacturing standards and passed program's audits and product testing. ANSI seeks comments on proposed common elements of ISO MSS.

ISO Technical Management Board Joint Technical Coordination Group has released a report containing recommendations for common elements to be included across all ISO management systems standards. These elements include high-level structure, identical clause titles, consistent text and terms, and standard definitions. As the U.S. member body to ISO, ANSI invites all interested stakeholders to submit comments on the recommendations by Friday, June 24, 2011. Read More

Manufacturing Employees awarded scholarships to university.

Partnering with University of Phoenix (UoP), The Manufacturing Institute (TMI) awarded one full-tuition undergraduate or master's degree scholarship at UoP for each of 20 qualified individuals. Scholarship, offered to those already employed in manufacturing, lets workers pursue education needed to advance their skills in 21st century manufacturing workplace. National Council of Governments on Building Codes and Standards provides state, local, and regional code agencies with opportunity to work together on issues - building permits, inspections, energy codes, accessibility requirements - that cross state lines. Among other things, Institute president Henry L. Green, Hon. IPC Summit to address issues impeding U.S. competitiveness.

Scheduled for June 15-16, IPC Summit on American Competitiveness and Capital Hill Day will address government over-regulation, export controls, and maintaining military and aerospace sectors' use of U.S. electronic interconnect manufacturing capacity. Next Gen Fuel Economy Labels increase consumer awareness.

U.S. DoT and U.S. EPA unveiled new fuel economy labels designed to help consumers take advantage of increased efficiency standards. These labels will provide comprehensive fuel efficiency information, including estimated annual fuel costs and savings as well as information on each vehicle's environmental impact. Starting with model year 2013, improved fuel economy labels will be required to be affixed to all new passenger cars and trucks. Read More

EPA Funds Small Businesses developing environmental technologies.

To support development of new technologies for protecting environment and public health, U.S. EPA is awarding nearly $2.25 million to 10 small companies in CA, CO, FL, MA, MI, and NM. Projects include reducing toxic chemicals from landfills, producing environmentally friendly adhesive, reducing methane emissions by converting dilute methane waste gas streams into useful fuel, and designing real-time environmental water monitoring sensor. Pan American Standards Commission (COPANT) held its annual General Assembly from May 12-13, 2011 in Santiago, Chile. Joining 17 other COPANT members in attendance, ANSI vice president Gary W. Kushnier led 21-member U.S. delegation representing public and private sector standardization organizations. ANSI president and CEO S. Research Project reuses air to save energy in low-income houses.

Through ASHRAE's Grants-In-Aids Award Program, Simge Andolsun, a student at Texas A&M University, plans to model a new HVAC/R energy saving strategy with partial conditioning or reuse of air. Partial conditioning is based on using remaining energy of air returning from occupied zones in unoccupied zones before it returns to system or is exhausted from system. Strategy is expected to provide reduction in overall HVAC/R energy consumption for low-income households in hot and humid climates. Read More

Fraunhofer to develop Clean Energy Center.

Fraunhofer Center for Sustainable Energy will partner with federal, state, and city agencies on $19.5 million Clean Energy Center that will serve as high-tech demonstration showcase, supporting established and start-up companies that are developing and demonstrating energy efficiency technologies. ANSI hosts Standards Wars workshop.

On May 12, nearly 200 representatives of industry, standards and conformance organizations, government, and consumer groups gathered for the ANSI workshop, Standards Wars: Myth or Reality?, which was organized as interactive panel-based discussions and Q/A sessions. The general view was that while conflict and duplication in standards development are deserving of continual vigilance, the U.S. voluntary consensus standardization system is strong, effective, and responsive to country's needs.
