House Committee calls for new direction for Northeast Corridor.

House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee introduced a plan to bring competition to high-speed and intercity passenger rail service across the country, including the nation's Northeast Corridor. According to John Horsley, executive director of AASHTO, it is in the national interest to develop a passenger rail network as part of a multimodal transportation system. This system must be developed with both public- and private-sector investment. Read More

Building Sciences Hearing solicits commercial data requirements.

National Institute of Building Sciences hearing in Washington, DC on July 18 will gather input from building industry participants about their commercial building data needs. It will be open to all parties interested in presenting views on state of commercial building related data, current and anticipated data needs, existing sources of data, and potential future data sources. Hearing is in response to news that EIA will not release its 2007 CBECS results or complete its 2011 Survey. Read More

Small Businesses to participate in wastewater discharge rule.

U.S. EPA is inviting small businesses to nominate representatives to participate in a Small Business Advocacy Review Panel, which will focus on agency's development of a proposed rulemaking to strengthen and revise wastewater discharge regulations for steam electric power generating plants. Small business' participation can help EPA learn, first-hand, about ways to reduce regulatory burdens and help EPA better understand small business' challenges in complying with wastewater regulations. NEMA Commends President's Plan for 21st century electrical grid.

NEMA commended President Obama's commitment to developing 21st century electrical grid as outlined in A Policy Framework for the 21st Century Grid: Enabling Our Secure Energy Future. According to NEMA President and CEO Evan R. Gaddis, "equipment and technology being developed and deployed by NEMA member companies...is integral to the success of this plan." ISPE announces partnership with EPA's ENERGY STAR Program.

Through participation in U.S. EPA's ENERGY STAR Program, ISPE aims to improve pharmaceutical industry exposure to program and help ISPE Members drive cost savings and green initiatives for their companies. ENERGY STAR Challenge for Industry calls upon businesses to create 5-year plan to reduce energy intensity by 10% or more. Companies that publicly join Challenge and meet the goal gain the right to communicate publicly that they have completed the ENERGY STAR Challenge. Read More

NAM Backs Initiative to bolster manufacturing workforce.

Announcing expansion to Skills for America's Future campaign, President Obama touted one initiative led by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) and its affiliate The Manufacturing Institute. Latter will lead effort to credential 500,000 community college students with skills certifications aligned to manufacturers' hiring needs. International Risk Evaluation Guidelines address nanotechnology.

ISO has published ISO/TR 13121, Nanotechnologies - Nanomaterial risk evaluation. Specifically, this Technical Report (TR) describes process for identifying, evaluating, addressing, making decisions about, and communicating potential risks of developing and using manufactured nanomaterials. NIST and AIP Agreement puts semiconductor research online.

NIST and American Institute of Physics (AIP) have agreed to make information on recent advances in semiconductor research freely available online in searchable PDF form. Proceedings from International Conference on Frontiers of Characterization and Metrology for Nanoelectronics are available for download from each institution's website. Developed by international shipper FedEx and tested with help from NIST, Senseaware is made for tracking delicate or perishable, high-value packages in transit. Device connects to cell phone networks to provide users with near real-time information on package's precise location, temperature, humidity, pressure, acceleration, elevation, and exposure to light. NIST researchers plan to deploy the technology as part of a pilot project to monitor and improve climate measurements. Read More

EPA improves access to information on hundreds of chemicals.

U.S. EPA is releasing 2 searchable databases on chemical toxicity and exposure data. ToxCastDB users can search and download data from over 500 rapid chemical tests conducted on more than 300 environmental chemicals. Using scientific tools, database predicts potential toxicity of chemicals and prioritizes which chemicals require further testing. ExpoCastDB consolidates human exposure data from studies that have collected chemical measurements from homes and child care centers. Read More

IPC Council issues advisory on counterfeit parts.

To assist IPC member companies in keeping their equipment and lines running, Surface Mount Equipment Manufacturers Association Council is creating an anti-counterfeit tool kit. First item in kit is an advisory statement to use only authorized channels for replacement parts and services. Equipment manufacturers are not responsible for damage caused by counterfeit inferior reworked, refurbished, and cannibalized parts and illegally transferred or copied software. Read More

Dr. Chris Kuehl, FMA economic analyst, asserts in Fabrinomics economic update newsletter that current downturn is temporary and cites 3 reasons it will not last. Specific reasons include inflation threat has yet to manifest in ways that will permanently shift consumer behavior, Japan's recovery related to issues stemming from recent earthquake, and that some conditions which led to expansion of recession are fading. North American Machine Vision Market grew 34% in 2011 Q1.

According to AIA's Quarterly Machine Vision Sales Tracking Report, machine vision sales grew 34% in North America in first quarter of 2011. This marks fifth straight quarter of double-digit growth. Report also found continuation of widespread industry optimism, as ~½ of all companies submitting data expect sales to improve over first quarter 2011 levels during next 6 months.
