Process Expo 2011 Exhibit Sales on pace to double 2010's numbers.

Food Processing Suppliers Association (FPSA) announced that, thanks to continuing strong sales, expanded show floor for PROCESS EXPO 2011 has reached 175,000 net square feet. Event, which takes place in Chicago, IL from November 1-4, brings together suppliers from all sectors of food and beverage industry, many of which will not be exhibiting anywhere else this year. FPSA President and CEO David Seckman noted that growth rate puts this year's show to be twice as large as 2010's. Read More

IPC APEX EXPO 2011 sees 8% increase in participants.

IPC has released verified attendance figures from IPC APEX EXPO(TM), indicating an 8% increase over last year with 7,208 total participants. Number of attendees at educational programs and exhibition grew an additional 5% over last year to 3,887, but most notably, 20% more of these attendees participated in the technical conference and/or professional development courses. IPC APEX EXPO also saw sizable increase in international attendance, representing 52 countries and nearly 20% of all attendees. Read More

BIO World Congress highlights product development opportunities.

FPSA announces dates for 2013 and 2015 PROCESS EXPO.

FPSA announced that it has reached an agreement with Chicago's Convention and Tourism Bureau that will keep association's trade show, PROCESS EXPO, in Chicago for the foreseeable future. In 2013, show will be held October 14-17, while 2015 show dates will be October 6-9. During biennial tradeshow, qualified buyers representing every market of food industry from more than 75 countries meet face-to-face with suppliers to showcase newest developments in food equipment and technology. EPA Labeling Program lists 2,500 environmentally safe products.

EPA announced that more than 2,500 products are now authorized under its Design for the Environment (DfE) Safer Product Labeling Program. DfE labeled products do not contain known chemicals of potential concern, like carcinogenic, reproductive, or developmental toxicants, and have to meet requirements for sustainable packaging and limits on VOCs. EPA also announced that it soon will require manufacturers with products that bear the DfE logo to disclose their ingredients to consumers. Read More

PACK EXPO Keynote Speaker to be retired General Colin L. Powell.

DuPont(TM) will be one title sponsor for Leadership Lecture at PACK EXPO Las Vegas 2011, to be held in Las Vegas, NV from September 26-28, featuring keynote speaker retired General Colin L. Powell. Pedro Fernández, DuPont Packaging's regional director for the Americas, said that Powell's approach to solving big problems reflects DuPont's own beliefs concerning collaborative partnerships and problem resolution. EcoCAR 2 Engineering Competition is launched at SAE World Congress.

Established by the DOE and GM, EcoCAR 2 competition challenges 16 North American universities to reduce the environmental impact of vehicles without compromising performance, safety, and consumer acceptability. The 3-year program requires students to explore a variety of powertrain architectures and follow a real-world engineering regimen. Auto Ice Maker Research exposes energy efficiency possibilities.

Authored by NIST mechanical engineer David Yashar and guest researcher Ki-Jung Park, Energy Consumption of Automatic Ice Makers Installed in Domestic Refrigerators, exposes opportunities for efficiency improvements by examining electric heaters used to release ice bits from molds. DOE announced it will increase minimum efficiency standard by 25% over current level, starting in 2014, and intends to incorporate energy used by ice makers into their regulatory test. Read More

Automate 2011 Attendance was best in 10 years.

March 21-24 Automate 2011 Show and Conference in Chicago, IL saw 7,945 confirmed participants, marking its largest audience in over 10 years according to Automation Technologies Council (ATC) President Jeff Burnstein. Participant feedback, as explained by Burnstein, suggested Automate 2011 "successfully hit the target" in reaching both users and potential users in diverse industries interested in robots, machine vision, motion control and related automation technologies and solutions. Top 100 Finalists named in Team America Rocketry Challenge.

AIA released names of 100 qualifying teams, comprised of middle and high school students from 34 states, that will compete in final round of ninth annual Team America Rocketry Challenge on May 14, 2011. Contest aims to inspire students to pursue education and careers in science, math, and engineering. Each team is tasked with design and building of one rocket that will lift off to exactly 750 ft during 40-45 sec flight carrying raw egg, which must return to ground by parachute, undamaged. Meeting started with opening keynote by political strategist James "The Ragin' Cajun" Carville. Terry Swack spoke on subject of Life Cycle Assessment, while Pat Cleary gave presentation on crisis communications, and Norbert Gannon of U.S. Department of Commerce presented on anti-dumping issues. PMA releases Business Conditions Report for April 2011.

According to April 2011 Business Conditions Report, metalforming companies anticipate a softening in business conditions during next 3 months. Report shows that 40% of participants forecast an improvement in economic activity, down from 49% in March, while 15% report that activity will decline, up from 5% in March. Metalforming companies also expect drop in incoming orders, with 20% predicting decrease in orders, up from 10% in March, and 42% predicting increase in orders, down from 52% in March. Read More

Tooling U, developer of online manufacturing training, has relocated its headquarters to Tyler Village in Cleveland, OH to accommodate expansion. Located 6 miles from previous office, new headquarters remains accessible for employees while fitting needs of the growing company. Safety Award of Merit was presented to 17 companies which posted injury and illness incidence rate better than published BLS rate by 10% or greater as based on NAICS code. SFI issues open letter on value of forest conservation.

The Conservation Chamber of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, Inc. Board of Directors has issued an open letter citing the value of SFI programs in conserving North American forests and their ecosystems. In partnership, ANSI accredits certification bodies that audit suppliers of wood products, while SFI chain-of-custody certification tracks fiber content from production and manufacturing to end product, helping to verify company claims regarding how much of product comes from certified lands.
