FAA issues grant for replacement airport in North Dakota.

FAA announced $27 million Airport Improvement Program grant to the City of Williston, ND to purchase land to build a new airport and meet growing aviation demand by replacing Sloulin Field International Airport. Oil drilling operations have increased Williston’s population as well as passenger traffic, corporate aviation activity, and cargo operations at Sloulin Field. Expected to open in 2018, new airport will be called Williston Basin International with XWA as 3-letter airport identifier. ANSI Invites Comments on ISO healthcare standardization proposal.

Proposal submitted by ISO concerns new field of technical activity on healthcare administration. As U.S. member body to ISO, ANSI invites interested stakeholders to submit comments on said proposal by end of the business day on October 9, 2015. Proposed work program for the standardization of healthcare administration will include classification, terminology and nomenclature, management practices, and metrics that comprise business operations among healthcare entities. FAA proposes $1.9 million civil penalty against SkyPan Intl.

FAA announces largest civil penalty it has proposed against a UAS operator for endangering the safety of U.S. airspace. FAA alleges that between March 21, 2012, and Dec. 15, 2014, SkyPan International, Inc. conducted 65 unauthorized operations in some of the most congested airspace and heavily populated cities, violating airspace regulations and various operating rules. Of those, 43 flew in highly restricted New York Class B airspace. These operations were illegal and not without risk. Read More

EPA and DOJ Announce RCRA Settlement with Mosaic Fertilizer LLC.

Resolving alleged federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) violations, settlement with EPA and DOJ by Mosaic Fertilizer LLC ensures treatment, storage, and disposal of ~60 billion pounds of hazardous waste at 6 facilities in Florida and 2 in Louisiana. Trust fund will be established to cover closure, treatment, and long-term care of facilities, millions will be spent on facility and environmental projects, and civil penalties will be paid to USA, Louisiana, and Florida. SME Lends Expertise to Alliance for Manufacturing Foresight.

SME is part of Alliance for Manufacturing Foresight (MForesight), which will serve as a technology-focused consortium to provide input on national manufacturing research and development priorities. Funded by National Science Foundation and NIST, this consortium will be led by University of Michigan. SME will serve on leadership committee as well as leverage its member network, to help provide responses to inquiries on emerging technologies, opportunities, and priorities in manufacturing. ALAN Receives $75,000 through Amazon matching gift fundraiser.

In celebration of American Logistics Aid Network (ALAN)'s 10-year anniversary and to support ALAN's disaster relief mission, Amazon helped raise over $75,000 within 24 hr on Sept 29 through successful matching gift fundraiser. ANSI/NEMA Standard covers spool type porcelain insulators.

NEMA published ANSI/NEMA C29.3-2015 American National Standard for Wet-Process Porcelain Insulators—Spool Type. Standard covers insulators used in the transmission and distribution of electric energy and is used by electric power utility companies, public utilities, and manufacturers of high-voltage electrical products. In this revision, changes have been made to sampling sizes, glaze and color requirements, units of measurement, and marking and packing requirements. Read More

NTSB Issues Second Update on British Airways engine fire.

October 8, 2015

NTSB released investigative update regarding September 8, 2015 engine fire experienced by British Airways flight 2276, a Boeing 777, during takeoff at McCarran International Airport. Investigators disassembled and documented GE90 engine at GE facility in Evandale, OH. Examination revealed one portion of stage 8-10 spool in high-pressure compressor (HPC) section failed; fracture initiated in HPC stage 8 disk web. NTSB will continue metallurgical evaluations of disk and fracture features. Read More

Annual PACK Solutions Challenge deems CalPoly first place winner.

Presented by PMMI Foundation, PACK Solutions Challenge competition tasked participating students attending PACK EXPO with developing one packaging solution for fictional company Innovative Pharmaceuticals Inc. and its fast-dissolving OTC product. Teammates Nick Abbatelli, Rebecca Kisch, Jeff Norton, and Patrick Salibi from CalPoly will share $4,000 scholarship prize for taking first place. NREL Fills Leadership Role at National Wind Technology Center.

Dr. Daniel Laird will join Energy Department's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) on October 12 as director of National Wind Technology Center (NWTC). Expressing excitement for joining NWTC's research team, Laird said he "looks forward to working with the wind energy and water power teams to deliver the next generation of clean, reliable, and cost-effective power generation technologies." EPA Limits Toxic Pollutants from steam electric power plants.

Based on readily available technologies used in industry, final Steam Electric Effluent Limitation Guidelines reinforce ongoing trend towards cleaner, more modern plants. Standards provide flexibility in implementation via phased-in approach. This finalized rule by U.S. EPA will reduce discharge of mercury, arsenic, lead, and selenium into America's waterways from steam electric power plants by 1.4 billion pounds annually as well as reduce water withdrawal by 57 billion gallons per year. San Francisco 49ers tackle drone safety.

Working with the FAA, the NFL's San Francisco 49ers recently became the first professional sports franchise to record a video reminding everyone to abide by laws covering personal drone use. The video, which will be featured on the 49ers’ Levi’s Stadium scoreboard once during each home game, features Defensive Safety Eric Reid asking people to fly their unmanned aircraft safely. North American PCB Book-to-Bill Ratio reaches 5-year high.

According to IPC's North American Printed Circuit Board Statistical Program, year-over-year sales and order growth continued in August and book-to-bill ratio climbed to 1.13, its highest level in more than 5 years. Total North American PCB shipments increased 1.5% in August 2015 compared to August 2014. Year-to-date shipment growth stood at -0.1, reflecting negative sales growth rates seen earlier this year. Compared to previous month, PCB shipments were up 3.6%. Read More
