NEMA Launches ANSI-accredited Lighting Systems Committee.

Having received approval from ANSI Executive Standards Council as Accredited Standards Committee (ASC), ASC 137 Lighting Systems Committee is allowed to write American National Standards within its scope. This entails development of standards and specifications for indoor and outdoor lighting systems installed in an application with consideration of human health and comfort, personal security, physical environment, energy consumption, and daylight integration. ASC Membership votes 8 members on to Board.

Membership of ASC elected 8 members to serve as Directors on the Council's Board, including: Ted Clark, Steve Rosenberg, Andy Johnston, Bob Marquette, Rusty Thompson, Chuck Williams, John Carroll, and Mark Schneider. Each Director will serve 3-year term beginning January 1, 2015. Each person was nominated by Council’s Board Nominating Committee, which meets once a year to discuss Board-level succession and determine who is interested in serving the Council as a Board Member. Published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, "Lignin Valorization Through Integrated Biological Funneling and Chemical Catalysis", demonstrates a concept that provides opportunities for successful conversion of lignin into variety of renewable fuels, chemicals, and materials for sustainable energy economy. Hydraulic Institute Announces Dates for VSD 4-part webinar series.

Variable Speed Drives 4-part webinar series, led by industry experts, will examine how to improve pump systems reliability when using Variable Speed Drives (VSDs). EPA Report Shows Progress in urban air toxics reduction.

As required under Clean Air Act (CAA), U.S. EPA's Second Integrated Urban Air Toxics Report informs Congress of progress in reducing public health risks from urban air toxics. National emissions and air quality data, showing reduction of air toxics across USA since CAA Amendments of 1990, include 66% reduction in benzene, ~60% reduction in mercury from man-made sources, 84% decrease of lead in outdoor air, and removal of ~1.5 million tons/year of air toxics from stationary and mobile sources. Revised DOE Report recommends NEMA lighting standard.

U.S. DOE revised its October 2103 report, Dimming LEDs with Phase-Cut Dimmers: The Specifier's Process for Maximizing Success, to include recommendation of NEMA lighting standard, NEMA SSL 7A-2013 Phase Cut Dimming for Solid State Lighting: Basic Compatibility. Report specifies that for wall-box installation, NEMA SSL 7A-compliant dimmer be used with compliant LED sources. Pairing these products guarantees compatibility and ensures dimmer will not negate dimming claims of lamp/luminaire. Read More

Monthly Confidence Index eases from previous 2 months.

Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation released August 2014 Monthly Confidence Index for the Equipment Finance Industry. Overall, confidence is 58.9, easing from previous 2 months’ indexes of 61.4. When asked to assess their business conditions over next 4 months, 18.2% of executives said they believe business conditions will improve, down from 28.6% in July, while 78.8% of respondents believe business conditions will remain the same, and 3% believe business conditions will worsen. AAMA has released AAMA 663-14, Voluntary Specification for In-Process Quality Control Requirements for Applicators of Organic Coatings to Polyvinyl Chloride Exterior Profiles. Specification establishes minimum requirements for applicators of organic coatings to PVC exterior profiles that are used in windows, doors, and skylights. Jeffrey Langenhahn, Con-way Freight professional truck driver based in Plover, WI, was named 2014 Bendix Grand Champion at 77th annual National Truck Driving Championships. As announced by FAA, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University's unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) test site program is ready to conduct research vital to integrating UAS into this nation's airspace. This was last of 6 nationwide sites to be declared operational. Marking this event, demonstration was given of Smart Road Flyer multi-rotor UAS.
