PCB Engineering Poll shows troublesome PCB engineering aspects.

Polled on their biggest challenges with PCBs, PCB components, and PCB assembly process failures, 350+ engineers who attended IPC's Soldering and Assembly Defects webinar identified solder finish (39%), BGA components (29%), and reflow soldering (27%). Runners-up included electrical shorts/opens (27%), QFN/LGA components (27%), and credit paste printing (20%). Webinar instructor Bob Willis said this survey shows areas requiring concentrated efforts. Read More

ASTM International compilation STP 1536, In-Service Lubricant and Machine Analysis, Diagnostics and Prognostics, includes 11 peer-reviewed papers that provide information on monitoring in-service oils. In addition to guidelines for alarm limits and trend analysis, topics cover such issues as optimizing wind turbine oil condition monitoring program, linear sweep voltammetry in condition monitoring of diesel engine oil, and FTIR lubricant condition monitoring methodology. Hands-On ASTM Class to cover property condition assessments.

Two-day class gives overview of ASTM Standard Guide for Property Condition Assessments: Baseline Property Condition Assessment Process, and explains why standard was developed. Course also guides attendees on how to use standard to conduct baseline property condition assessment and how to prepare Property Condition Report. AFS seeks Board of Directors and 2nd Vice Chair nominations.

Every year, AFS Society elects 2nd Vice Chair and 6 members of Board of Directors. Elected 2nd Vice Chair will become AFS 2nd Vice Chair for 2013, 1st Vice Chair for 2014, and AFS Chair in 2015. For elected members of Board of Directors, term of service will begin at Fall 2012 Board of Directors Meeting or November 30, 2012, whichever is sooner, for term of 2 years. Only requirement is that nominees must be current 2012 members of AFS. Read More

Since mid 2011, approximately 1,400 people have participated in a NADCA webinar. NADCA encourages purchasing one webinar login and gathering employees to view presentation via projector. According to surveyed participants of various NADCA webinars, an average of 4 additional people joined them to view webinar. After 18 months of development, AIA unveiled its Vision for the Future. This brand identity is intended to emphasize commitment to advancing vision and imaging technology worldwide. In comment, AIA president Jeff Burnstein mentioned refocused priorities, investments in new activities and staff resources, as well as name changes for Association and its website. Construction Materials Prices decrease in December.

January 23, 2012

According to Jan 18 Producer Price Index report by U.S. Department of Labor, construction materials prices fell 0.2% in December. Construction materials prices were down 0.9% in fourth quarter, but were 5.3% higher than 1 year ago. ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu says increase in value of the dollar against many currencies helped produce decline in construction input prices. Also, slow down in various world economies contributes to less demand for construction inputs and softening input prices. Read More

Robotics Industry Umbrella Group changes name to A3.

Umbrella trade association for RIA, AIA, and the Motion Control Association has changed its name from Automation Technologies Council to the Association for Advancing Automation (A3). A3 will focus primarily on "why" automating is good, and will continue to focus on "how" companies and organizations specifically can apply robots, vision, and motion control. A3 currently represents more than 650 companies involved in automation from more than 30 nations. Read More

Catherine Morris becomes first woman Chair of RIA.

Catherine Morris, Senior Account Manager of ATI Industrial Automation, Apex, NC, was first elected to RIA Board in 2003 and most recently served as Board's First Vice Chair. She is a Past Chair, current member of RIA Membership Committee, and also chairs show committee for Automate 2013, RIA's flagship event. Morris has been an account manager with ATI for 16 years, with a primary focus on key OEMs and automotive customers. Read More

ANSI seeks experts for child safety guideline revision.

At September 2011 meeting, ISO Technical Management Board moved to initiate revision of ISO/IEC Guide 50 - child safety guidelines published by ISO and IEC. As member of ISO TMB, ANSI can name up to 2 experts to serve on ad hoc group being formed to pursue this revision effort. ISO/IEC Guide 50 provides framework for addressing potential sources of unintentional hazards to which children might be exposed during use of, or interaction with, a product, service, or system. NREL's Economic Benefit to Colorado totals $831.3 million.

According to study by University of Colorado's Leeds College of Business, NREL's economic impact grew 41% from FY 2009's $588.3 million, and 12% from FY 2010's $742 million, as construction continued on energy-efficient research and office buildings that will house employees leading nation to clean energy future. NREL's construction spending totaled $69 million in FY 2011, up from $26.7 million 2 years previous, translating to hundreds of new jobs for construction workers. Read More
