Manufacturing Employment improves in December.

According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, unemployment rate fell from revised 8.7% in November to 8.5% in December. In addition, nonfarm payrolls increased by 200,000, exceeding expectations which had predicted rise of 150,000. Manufacturing employment jumped by 23,000 net new workers in December, nearly mirroring increase found in recent ADP report. In 2011, U.S. economy added 1.64 million new jobs, surpassing 940,000 net new workers created in 2010. Read More

IPC Standard covers Surface Mount Placement Characterization.

January 10, 2012

To help determine best placement equipment setup to meet needs for speed, capability, and accuracy, IPC released IPC-9850 Rev A, Surface Mount Placement Characterization, making it easier to quantify performance of placement equipment. New method calculates Expanded Measurement Uncertainty, which combines all measurement uncertainty of system. Individual factors included in EMU are gage repeatability and reproducibility variance, non-linearity, resolution, hysteresis, and artifact uncertainty. Read More

IPC Membership reaches record number.

IPC ended 2011 with 3,215 members, the greatest number of members ever achieved in organization's history. Members are companies from every level of electronics supply chain: printed board manufacturers, electronics manufacturing services companies, OEMs, and industry suppliers. According to communications study by third-party consultant, 94% of IPC members surveyed agreed that IPC offers the most comprehensive and reliable information for electronics industry professionals. RIA transfers Certified Rug Specialist certification.

RIA Board of Directors has voted to transfer ownership and administration of its Certified Rug Specialist certification program to Association of Rug Care Specialists, effective January 5, 2012. CRS is nation's only certification program that focuses on advanced technical study of Oriental and specialty rugs with emphasis on history of handmade rugs, rug identification, cleaning and repair techniques, and potential cleaning problems based on rug's origin and construction. EPA releases Toxics Release Inventory analysis.

January 6, 2012

Toxics Release Inventory program publishes information on toxic chemical disposals and other releases into air, land, and water, as well as information on waste management and pollution prevention activities in neighborhoods across the country. According to 2010 TRI data, 3.93 billion pounds of toxic chemicals were released into environment nationwide, a 16% increase from 2009. Total air releases decreased 6% since 2009, continuing trend seen over past several years. Read More

NSF International and Underwriters Laboratories have announced agreement to partner on health-based American National Standard, NSF/UL 440, for volatile organic emissions from building products and interior materials, furnishings, and finishes. NEMA HP7 covers specific requirements for PVC, PVC/polyamide, PE, and PE/polyamide insulated stranded wire designed for internal wiring of high reliability electrical and electronic equipment. Publication addresses 600 V (Type B, BN, J, and JN), 1,000 V (Type C and CN) and 3,000 V (Type D and DN) wire and permits continuous operating temperature ratings of -55 to +105°C or +75°C (type J and JN only) with either tin or silver coated conductors. EPA recognizes National Radon Action Month.

January 5, 2012

As part of National Radon Action Month, EPA is encouraging Americans to take steps to test their homes for harmful levels of radon gas. Approximately 21,000 people die from radon related lung cancer each year in U.S., yet elevated levels of this health hazard can be prevented. EPA and U.S. Surgeon General recommend that all homes, both with and without basements, be tested for radon through DIY test kits or by hiring qualified tester. ANSI and IREC announce pilot accreditation program.

ANSI and Interstate Renewable Energy Council invite certificate-awarding entities that develop and administer energy efficiency and renewable energy programs to apply for participation in pilot accreditation program. Successful participants will be awarded accreditation under program designed to provide quality assurance. Nonresidential Construction Spending increased in November.

January 5, 2012

According to January 3 report by U.S. Commerce Department, total nonresidential construction spending increased 0.9% in November to seasonally adjusted annual rate of $555.7 billion. However, total nonresidential spending is down 0.1% from one year ago. Private nonresidential construction spending was unchanged for the month, but is 4.5%higher than November 2010. Public nonresidential construction jumped 1.8% in November, but is still down 4.4% year-over-year. Read More
