World's Largest Rocket Contest celebrates 10 years.

Nearly 700 teams of middle and high school students across 48 states, District of Columbia, and Virgin Islands are gearing up for 2012 Team America Rocketry Challenge. This year, each team is tasked with designing and building rocket carrying 2 egg payload to 800 ft and back during 43-47 sec flight without cracking. Strict limit on liftoff weight forces students to focus on designing payload bay while building lighter, stronger rocket. Top 100 teams will advance to National Finals, May 12. Read More

Manufacturers believe transportation bill will create jobs.

February 2, 2012

NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons issued statement regarding transportation, infrastructure, and energy legislation introduced by House Republicans. Manufacturers have long supported multi-year bill to fund surface transportation investments. Improving highways, bridges, and tunnels and relieving congestion on roadways will get Americans back to work. NAM is pleased that this legislation includes expanded domestic energy production, given that manufacturers use 1/3 of nation's energy supply. Read More

FDA's Grace McNally will appear at ISPE facilities conference.

U.S. FDA's Grace McNally will add her expertise to that of other industry and regulatory experts at ISPE's upcoming Lessons from 483s: Enhancing Efficiency, Quality and cGMP Compliance Conference. This 2-day event will review recent regulatory citations (FDA-483s) and provide guidance on how they can be avoided. Nonresidential Construction Structure Market has disappointing Q4,.

According to Jan 27 GDP Report by Department of Commerce, nonresidential fixed investment increased 1.7% in fourth quarter of 2011 following revised 15.7% increase in previous quarter. Nonresidential fixed investment in structures fell 7.2% after increasing 14.4% in third quarter, while nonresidential fixed investment in equipment and software was up 5.2% in fourth quarter following 16.2% increase in third quarter. In addition, residential fixed investment jumped 10.9% in fourth quarter. Read More

EPRI to develop transmission line insulator inspection robot.

February 2, 2012

EPRI initiated development of an Insulator Crawler with integrated camera and EPRI prototype live working NCI Tool, which assesses integrity of polymer insulators as they are installed. Although there is a long way to go, project is revealing that use of robotics has significant advantages. Robot will enable implementation of emerging contact insulator inspection technologies at 345 kV and above, and will increase safety by enabling personnel to be removed from energized situations. EPRI has a research effort aimed at fully understanding the potential and limitations of portable electronic device technology in utility workspace and impact these devices may have on workforce, efficiency, and how to adapt work processes to fully take advantage of these devices. IEEE joins China's CERNET federation.

IEEE expanded its Shibboleth® coverage by joining CERNET federation of China, which is part of CARSI Project, an inter-institutional authentication and authorization project. Shibboleth is standards-based, open source software that enables Web single sign-on across or within organizational boundaries. IEEE's partnership in CERNET federation means that institutional users of IEEE Xplore® Digital Library can enjoy single sign-on access to subscribed electronic resources even if they are off campus. EPA Provides $9.8 Million to clean up beaches across USA.

February 2, 2012

U.S. EPA grants to 38 states, territories, and tribes will go towards protecting health of swimmers at beaches. Also, agency launched improved website, BEACON, for beach advisories and closings for 6,000+ U.S. beaches. Website is updated as frequently as every 2 hr and gives visitors access to mapped location data from beaches and water monitoring stations, monitoring results for pollutants such as bacteria and algae, and reports combining notifications and water quality monitoring data. According to nonpartisan Clarus Poll, 70% of national electorate would be more inclined to vote for a presidential candidate with strong position on America's manufacturing industries and jobs, while solid 65% also said they would be more inclined to vote for candidate with strong position on rebuilding nation's infrastructure. Poll found that most voters don't think any of the presidential candidates have been particularly strong on these issues. Read More

AEM's State of the Union Reply pushes infrastructure program.

In response to President Obama's State of the Union address, AEM President Dennis Slater said "America's manufacturers are working hard every day to bring jobs back to this country." To aid their efforts, Slater cited a need for an infrastructure program that will help U.S. manufacturers complete globally. He then called for passage of "a fully-funded highway bill and not more short-term stop gap measures" and also urged President Obama to reconsider his Keystone XL pipeline decision. Read More

Printing Ink Vehicle Definitions to be compiled in one standard.

Proposed standard ASTM WK35704, Terminology for Printing Ink Vehicles and Related Materials, is being developed by Subcommittee D01.37 on Ink Vehicles. According to D01 member John Daugherty, "ASTM WK35704 will contain terms used to describe raw materials, processing/manufacturing, and testing of printing ink vehicles." Standard will allow suppliers and users - manufacturers of resins, ink oils, alkyds, vehicles, and printing inks - to use terms without any confusion or misunderstanding. Read More

EPA Presents Heat Metering Framework to ASTM/IAPMO partnership.

January 31, 2012

On December 20 of 2011, ASTM International and International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials signed memorandum of understanding (MOU) that establishes framework of cooperation for development of ASTM standards for heat metering. MOU terms state ASTM will serve as standards developing organization for activity on heat metering, while IAPMO will participate within ASTM process and provide technical expertise.
