BIO Explains Economic Importance of Renewable Fuel Standard.

Biofuel and renewable energy organizations asked Congressional leaders to continue full support of Renewable Fuel Standard. With this standard in place, BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood argues, private companies have moved toward commercialization of advanced biofuels as quickly as possible, that they are "playing by the rules," and that they only ask federal policy remain stable in order to "continue putting steel in the ground" and creating permanent biotechnology/energy jobs. Flexible Printed Boards Standard now includes design guidance.

Updated IPC-2223, Sectional Design Standard for Flexible Printed Boards, now includes new design guidance and requirements for preformed bends, irregular folds and creases, staggered flexible layer bands as an alternative to bookbinder designs, and depanelization methods for flexible and rigid-flex array sub-pallets. Appendix A is new design tutorial with guidance on material selection, size and shape of flex circuits and fabrication allowances. Read More

Green Building Code references ASTM standards.

In 2012 International Green Construction Code (IgCC) published by International Code Council (ICC), there are 46 ASTM International standards cited that cover various aspects of building construction. There are 13 ASTM technical committees which have standards referenced in IgCC, with topics from air quality to thermal insulation. Standards developed by ASTM Committees E06 on Performance of Buildings and E60 on Sustainability are well represented. Read More

ASABE to Revise Shallow Post Foundation Design standard.

American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) has initiated project to update and revise ANSI/ASAE EP486.1, Shallow Post Foundation Design, in order to better address numerous considerations. In addition to in-situ determination of soil properties, prescriptive soil bearing capacity values, and modeling analogs, concerns include safety factors relating to ASD and LRFD design methodologies, ultimate lateral strength of foundations, and minimum footing sizes. White House Biotech Director to keynote 2012 MichBio meeting.

Dr. Michael Stebbins will serve as keynote speaker at MichBio's 2012 Annual Business Meeting and Showcase on April 19 in Livonia, MI. Electroindustry Business Confidence Index remains positive.

March 29, 2012

Following run-up of more than 20 points in January and February to highest level in more than 6 years, NEMA's Electroindustry Business Confidence Index for current North American conditions retreated slightly in March, slipping 0.5 points to 72. Survey's measure of degree of change in current North American conditions remained at its highest mark in almost 2 years at +0.7. EBCI for future North American conditions remained strongly positive, jumping 11 points to 86 in March. Read More

EPA Proposes Limits to new potentially harmful chemical uses.

U.S. EPA has proposed that companies be required to report to EPA all new uses, including in domestic or imported products, of 5 groups of potentially harmful chemicals. Chemicals targeted by EPA are polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs), benzidine dyes, short chain chlorinated paraffin, hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), and phthalate di-n-pentyl phthalate (DnPP). Also, EPA is proposing additional testing on health and environmental effects of PBDEs. Read More

FCHEA Details Transportation Working Group activities.

FCHEA Transportation Working Group (TWG) is meeting monthly. It has been discussing areas of interest and priority, including deployment of hydrogen infrastructure, codes, standards and regulations, and how to maximize effectiveness of TWG with limited budget. Also, TWG is helping create key messages on issue of natural gas as transition strategy for hydrogen and seeks subject matter expert in piping codes. Revised Report details basic hydrogen safety considerations.

Second edition of ISO/TR 15916, Basic considerations for the safety of hydrogen systems, is in final preparation for review and comment. This update of ISO Technical Report on basic hydrogen safety information provides guidelines for use of hydrogen in its gaseous and liquid forms, identifies basic safety concerns and risks, and describes properties of hydrogen that are relevant to safety. Publication of Amended Technical Report is expected in November 2012. Read More

ELFA releases February Monthly Leasing and Finance Index.

According to ELFA's Monthly Leasing and Finance Index, overall new business for February was $5.0 billion, up 22% from $4.1 billion in same period in 2011. Volume was down 2% from previous month, and year-to-date cumulative new business volume was up 22%. Receivables over 30 days increased to 2.5% in February, up from 2-year low of 1.9% in January, and charge-offs were unchanged from previous month at 0.5%. Credit approvals rose to 79%, up from 77% in January. Read More

Hydraulic Institute (HI) recognized 2011 Standards VIP (Very Important Participant) recipients at 2012 HI Annual Meeting in St. Petersburg, Florida. EFI Monthly Confidence Index increases in March.

According to March 2012 Monthly Confidence Index for Equipment Finance Industry, confidence is 61.7, up from February index of 59.6. When asked to assess business conditions over next 4 months, 28.9% of executives said they believe business conditions will improve, up from 23.5% in February. Also, 34.2% of respondents believe demand for leases and loans to fund capital expenditures will increase over next 4 months, an increase from 26.5% in February. Read More

NAM Urges President to approve entire Keystone XL pipeline.

In his statement regarding President Obama's remarks on energy in Cushing, OK, NAM President and CEO Jay Timmons said President Obama's "all of the above" energy policy "should include all available domestic sources of energy as well as resources from our North American allies." Expounding on his meaning, Timmons said "This means expanded exploration of the Outer Continental Shelf, additional development of shale, nuclear, clean coal, and the approval of the Keystone XL pipeline."
