IEEE joins China's CERNET federation.

February 2, 2012

IEEE expanded its Shibboleth® coverage by joining CERNET federation of China, which is part of CARSI Project, an inter-institutional authentication and authorization project. Shibboleth is standards-based, open source software that enables Web single sign-on across or within organizational boundaries. IEEE's partnership in CERNET federation means that institutional users of IEEE Xplore® Digital Library can enjoy single sign-on access to subscribed electronic resources even if they are off campus. EPA Provides $9.8 Million to clean up beaches across USA.

February 2, 2012

U.S. EPA grants to 38 states, territories, and tribes will go towards protecting health of swimmers at beaches. Also, agency launched improved website, BEACON, for beach advisories and closings for 6,000+ U.S. beaches. Website is updated as frequently as every 2 hr and gives visitors access to mapped location data from beaches and water monitoring stations, monitoring results for pollutants such as bacteria and algae, and reports combining notifications and water quality monitoring data. Voters want candidates to focus on manufacturing.

According to nonpartisan Clarus Poll, 70% of national electorate would be more inclined to vote for a presidential candidate with strong position on America's manufacturing industries and jobs, while solid 65% also said they would be more inclined to vote for candidate with strong position on rebuilding nation's infrastructure. Poll found that most voters don't think any of the presidential candidates have been particularly strong on these issues. Read More

AEM's State of the Union Reply pushes infrastructure program.

February 1, 2012

In response to President Obama's State of the Union address, AEM President Dennis Slater said "America's manufacturers are working hard every day to bring jobs back to this country." To aid their efforts, Slater cited a need for an infrastructure program that will help U.S. manufacturers complete globally. He then called for passage of "a fully-funded highway bill and not more short-term stop gap measures" and also urged President Obama to reconsider his Keystone XL pipeline decision. Read More

Printing Ink Vehicle Definitions to be compiled in one standard.

February 1, 2012

Proposed standard ASTM WK35704, Terminology for Printing Ink Vehicles and Related Materials, is being developed by Subcommittee D01.37 on Ink Vehicles. According to D01 member John Daugherty, "ASTM WK35704 will contain terms used to describe raw materials, processing/manufacturing, and testing of printing ink vehicles." Standard will allow suppliers and users - manufacturers of resins, ink oils, alkyds, vehicles, and printing inks - to use terms without any confusion or misunderstanding. Read More

EPA Presents Heat Metering Framework to ASTM/IAPMO partnership.

January 31, 2012

On December 20 of 2011, ASTM International and International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials signed memorandum of understanding (MOU) that establishes framework of cooperation for development of ASTM standards for heat metering. MOU terms state ASTM will serve as standards developing organization for activity on heat metering, while IAPMO will participate within ASTM process and provide technical expertise. Proposed ASTM Standard addresses overhead electrical conductors.

Proposed standard, ASTM WK35208, Test Methods for Stress-Strain and Creep Testing for Overhead Electrical Conductors, will provide clear guidelines for performing test used to develop model for electrical conductors employed in overhead power lines and processing data resulting from such tests. This model will then be used to determine clearance for power lines to prevent lines from coming into contact with people or other objects. Read More

Metalforming Companies predict improved business conditions.

January 31, 2012

According to January 2012 PMA Business Conditions Report, 41% of participants expect economic activity to improve during next 3 months, up from 33% in December 2011, while only 5% predict that activity will decline, down from 10% in December. Metalforming companies also expect spike in incoming orders during next 3 months, with 51% anticipating increase, up from 40% in December. In addition, 30% report shipping levels are above levels of 3 months ago, up from 25% in December. Read More

Procedures and Standards Administration department of ANSI reminds all Administrators of ANSI-Accredited U.S. Technical Advisory Groups (TAGs) to ISO that 2011 TAG Annual Reports are due no later than January 31, 2012. Annual report, prepared by each U.S. TAG administrator, should describe in summary narrative form U.S. TAG activity during past year. NEMA Publishes ANSI Standard for power system voltage ratings.

National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has published ANSI C84.1 Electric Power Systems and Equipment - Voltage Ratings (60 Hertz), which establishes nominal voltage ratings and operating tolerances for 60 Hz electric power systems above 100 V. Available in hard or electronic copy, this publication includes preferred voltage ratings up to and including 1,200 kV max system voltage as defined in the standard. Read More

EPMA Launches Powder Metallurgy thesis competition.

With aim of developing interest in and promoting powder metallurgy among young scientists at European academic establishments, EPMA announced launch of 2012 PM Thesis Competition at both Diploma and Doctorate levels. Entry is open to applicants who have graduated from any European university and who have had their theses approved during 2009/2010, 2010/2011, and 2011/2012 academic years. EBCI for North American Conditions continues to increase.

Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American conditions rose in January to 54.2 from December's reading of 52, and more panelists than not reported improved business environment. Survey's measure of degree of change in current North American conditions rebounded to +0.1 in January from 0.0 in previous month; January's EBCI for future North American conditions climbed to 79.2, highest since May 2011; and index jumped 9+ points in latest month.
