Scheduled for May 8, Metal-on-Metal Total Hip Replacement Devices symposium will provide forum for consensus development and scientific exchange on needs for characterization and standardized testing. Main focus is to help establish best testing practices in 4 areas: characterization of adverse local tissue reactions; wear/corrosion: metallic product measurement in fluid and tissue samples; analyses of retrieved MoM implants; and in vitro testing of MoM implants under adverse conditions. ASTM Workshop to cover addresses structural and life prediction modeling.

To be held in Phoenix, AZ on May 9, Verification of Life Prediction Software workshop will bring together life prediction software developers, users, certifying agencies, and technical specialists familiar with verification and validation (V&V) of software in diverse fields. Douglas Pauls elected to chair IPC TAEC.

Douglas Pauls of Rockwell Collins will chair IPC Technical Activities Executive Committee for 2-year term. Presently, Pauls is General Chairman of IPC's Cleaning and Coating Committees and has led IPC efforts in bare board cleanliness, solder mask, surface insulation resistance, chemical characterization, conformal coating, and materials and process compatibility testing. He has also served as U.S. representative to ISO and IEC working groups on SIR and electromigration reliability standards. Read More

New NREL Fellows to help guide research.

NREL named Dr. Howard Branz and Dr. Michael Himmel to its Research Fellows Council. Branz is a leader in silicon photovoltaics who produced a world record in nano-structured solar cells, while Himmel is a biochemist whose work on cellulase simplified and lowered cost of converting biomass to fuel. Along with 5 current members of Council, they will advise NREL executive management on strategic direction of science and technology inquiry at the laboratory. Read More

Manufacturers Challenge EPA GHG Regulations to save jobs.

Challenging EPA's decision to regulate GHG emissions from stationary sources through Clean Air Act, NAM and other business groups presented oral arguments before U.S. Court of Appeals for D.C. Circuit. Coalition presented recommendation that would avoid EPA's self-described "absurd results" form its own approach and corresponding consequences for manufacturing. BMW to display ActiveE at Electric Vehicle Conference.

BMW will display its first all-electric vehicle, ActiveE, at IEEE International Electric Vehicle Conference. With output of 170 hp and max torque of 184 lb-ft from standstill, BMW ActiveE accelerates from 0-60 mph in under 9 seconds. Newly developed lithium-ion batteries facilitate driving range up to 100 miles on full charge. Motion Control Market Report shows strong finish in 2011.

Statistics released by Motion Control Association (MCA) showed that orders for motion control products rose 17.7% in 2011. Gains also occurred in fourth quarter, rising 4% over same period in 2010. Referring to 2011 results, MCA VP Dana Whalls pointed out "double-digit growth across all product categories" tracked by MCA and also noted that "2011 is the second year in a row of double-digit growth." RIA Launches Certified Robot Integrator program.

RIA is taking applications from integrators interested in becoming certified. JR Automation's Scot Lindemann named RIA's experience handling confidential data as well as association's development of American National Robot Safety Standard and safety training as justifications for RIA undertaking certification. Curtis Richardson of Spirit Aerosystems called program "a convenient tool" to help identify established integrators as well as those who meet "basic but very critical" criteria. Read More

NEMA has published ANSI/NEMA FB 1 Fittings, Cast Metal Boxes and Conduit Bodies for Conduit, Electrical Metallic Tubing, and Cable; NEMA FB 2.10 Selection and Installation Guidelines for Fittings for use with Non-Flexible Conduit or Tubing (Rigid Metal Conduit, Intermediate Metallic Conduit, and Electrical Metallic Tubing); and NEMA FB 2.20 Selection and Installation Guidelines for Fittings for use with Flexible Electrical Conduit and Cable. U.S. Construction Machinery Exports gain 43% in 2011.

March 2, 2012

According to AEM, U.S. construction equipment exports increased 43% in 2011 compared to previous year, reaching total of $23.5 billion. Top 10 countries in terms of buying U.S.-made construction machinery in 2011 were Canada, Australia, Mexico, Chile, Brazil, China, Colombia, South Africa, Russia, and Peru. AEM and its "I Make America" campaign have pushed for export-friendly policies that create and sustain American jobs. Examples of such policies includes free trade agreements. Read More

Nominating and Governance Committee of IPC Board of Directors presented 9 candidates for election at IPC Annual Meeting. Stephen Pudles, CEO of Spectral Response LLC, was elected Chairman, while Marc Peo, President of Heller Industries was chosen for Vice Chairman, and Joseph O'Neil, President of Hunter Technology Corporation, was picked for Secretary/Treasurer. FAA increase efficiency and reduce emissions in GA and NC airports.

As part of FAA's NextGen modernization program, the Metroplex initiative, includes optimization of airspace procedures and aims to improve flow of air traffic into and out of all airports in Atlanta and Charlotte metropolitan areas. Collaborative regional partnership includes FAA, National Air Traffic Controllers Association, Delta Air Lines, US Airways, and Atlanta and Charlotte-area airports.
