BIO stresses importance of biofuels for national security.

April 3, 2012

In letter to House Armed Services Committee and its Subcommittee on Readiness, BIO emphasized that domestic biofuel production is necessary for energy and national security. According to BIO President Jim Greenwood, military's reliance on oil is a liability that enemies can exploit by blocking access to fuel supplies during missions. While cost of renewable energy is high now, it is declining rapidly through ongoing research and development and early commercialization efforts. Read More

AEM Safety Manual addresses log harvesters/processors.

Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM)'s safety manual for mounted log harvester/processors outlines safe practices for equipment operators, maintenance personnel, and other workers on jobsite. Topics include chain shot hazards, processor head maintenance, and operation in hazardous conditions. In addition to promoting safety-conscious attitudes and performance, manual helps improve productivity, minimize downtime from accidents, and lessen repair costs due to improper maintenance. AIA Welcomes Nomination of Michael Huerta as FAA administrator.

AIA welcomes President Obama's nomination of Michael Huerta to be FAA administrator. Association called Huerta "a proven leader and a very strong advocate for the FAA" capable of taking on long-term challenges. Specific examples of Huerta's expertise included his understanding of importance of seeing Next Generation Air Transportation System getting up and running as well as his comprehension of how its benefits outweigh short-term hurdles. BIO Applauds Congress for passage of JOBS Act.

BIO praised House and Senate for passage of H.R. 3606, Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act, which will make path to capital formation more attainable for small biotechnology companies. In turn, this will clear way for American innovation and ingenuity by removing bureaucratic hurdles and red tape, accelerating cures and medical breakthroughs. Novozymes CEO and President named 2012 biotech award recipient.

BIO named Novozymes President and CEO Steen Riisgaard as recipient of 2012 George Washington Carver Award for innovation in industrial biotechnology. Under Riisgaard's leadership, Novozymes is creating tomorrow's industrial biotechnology solutions and improving use of Earth's resources while reducing reliance on fossil fuels. IPC releases PCB industry results for February 2012.

According to findings from IPC's North American PCB Statistical Program, rigid PCB shipments were down 1.9% in February 2012 from February 2011, but bookings increased 6.9% year over year. Compared to previous month, rigid PCB shipments increased 5.9%. Book-to-bill ratio for rigid PCB industry climbed to 1.04 in February 2012. In February 2012, flexible circuit shipments were down 6.4%, bookings were up 1.8% compared to February 2011, and book-to-bill ratio rose to 1.10. Read More

Scheduled for June 26, workshop on Transitioning from Mercury Thermometers to Alternative Thermometers will be held at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square. Over last 6 years, NIST has actively participated in national and international phase-out efforts to identify alternative thermometers for broad range of measurement applications. ANSI seeks comments on proposed ISO energy services standard.

Proposed ISO standard, Guidelines for the assessment and improvement of energy services to users, would provide sector-specific guidance for energy suppliers to measure and assess services with a view toward increasing customer satisfaction and improving efficiency and effectiveness of services to household users. ANSI Welcomes CCAA to discuss ISO 26000 and other programs.

Delegation from China Certification and Accreditation Association (CCAA), led by deputy secretary general Yao Lei, visited ANSI on November 29 to discuss potential cooperation in area of standards and conformance. During meeting, Yao provided overview of CCAA and discussed areas of potential future cooperation on issues of importance to both organizations' members. CCAA reported current project to investigate other countries' use and implementation of ISO 26000 and other programs. Read More

Pauley, senior VP of external affairs and government relations at Schneider Electric USA, was appointed chairman of the board for 1-year term. Flexible Printed Boards Standard now includes design guidance.

Updated IPC-2223, Sectional Design Standard for Flexible Printed Boards, now includes new design guidance and requirements for preformed bends, irregular folds and creases, staggered flexible layer bands as an alternative to bookbinder designs, and depanelization methods for flexible and rigid-flex array sub-pallets. Green Building Code references ASTM standards.

In 2012 International Green Construction Code (IgCC) published by International Code Council (ICC), there are 46 ASTM International standards cited that cover various aspects of building construction. There are 13 ASTM technical committees which have standards referenced in IgCC, with topics from air quality to thermal insulation. Standards developed by ASTM Committees E06 on Performance of Buildings and E60 on Sustainability are well represented. Read More

ASABE to Revise Shallow Post Foundation Design standard.

American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) has initiated project to update and revise ANSI/ASAE EP486.1, Shallow Post Foundation Design, in order to better address numerous considerations. In addition to in-situ determination of soil properties, prescriptive soil bearing capacity values, and modeling analogs, concerns include safety factors relating to ASD and LRFD design methodologies, ultimate lateral strength of foundations, and minimum footing sizes.
