ASTM Cement Committee honors Paul Stutzman with Award of Merit.

ASTM International Committee C01 on Cement presented Award of Merit and title of fellow to Paul Stutzman, physical scientist at NIST in Gaithersburg, MD, for his longtime service and contributions to development of standards for measurement and analysis of microstructural features of hydraulic cements and other concrete-making materials. ASTM International member since 1990, Stutzman serves as C01 secretary and is also member of Committee C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates. Read More

NREL drives toward future with fuel cell EVs.

As part of Cooperative Research and Development Agreement, NREL has received 4 Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicles - Advanced on loan from Toyota, which will help NREL enhance research capabilities related to hydrogen fueling infrastructure, renewable hydrogen production, and vehicle performance. Testing will include observing how vehicles interact with fueling infrastructure and fueling stations that operate at different pressures, as well as how drivers interact with vehicles and influence performance. FAA AIP Grants improve Logan Airport runway safety.

July 1, 2013

FAA and Massachusetts Port Authority unveiled 2 safety enhancements to Logan Airport's longest runway. Totaling $50 million, FAA Airport Improvement Project (AIP) grants helped fund crushable concrete safety area, which includes 300 ft wide concrete pier that extends 470 ft into Boston Harbor at end of Runway 33L, to prevent planes from overrunning runway. FAA also installed navigational aid improvements that will help planes land safely in bad weather. Read More

AIA Congratulates Secretary Foxx on confirmation by Senate.

AIA congratulated Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx on being unanimously confirmed by United States Senate to succeed outgoing Secretary Ray LaHood. AIA President and CEO Marion C. Blakey said Foxx "brings substantial credentials and valuable local government experience to Washington." She added that aerospace industry looks forward to working with Foxx and will assist him as he "puts together a transportation plan that balances today’s needs with tomorrow’s necessary investments." SME seeks manufacturing professionals with subject-area expertise to speak at AeroDef Manufacturing 2014. This exposition and technical conference, devoted solely to aerospace and defense manufacturing, will be held February 25–27 at Long Beach (CA) Convention Center. Mary Jane Mitchell named AIA assistant VP of acquisition policy.

Mary Jane Mitchell has joined Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) as assistant vice president of Acquisition Policy. Reporting to Christian Marrone, vice president of National Security and Acquisition Policy, Mitchell will be responsible for managing AIA's work and advocacy on acquisition and procurement policy.
