Nonresidential Construction Spending slips in January.

According to March 1 report by U.S. Commerce Department, total nonresidential construction spending decreased 0.8% in January to $566.4 billion. However, total nonresidential construction spending was up 7.9% from January 2011. Private nonresidential construction spending was down 1.5% for the month, but was 16.6% higher than one year ago. In addition, public nonresidential construction spending was down 0.1% for January, but was up 0.4% from same time last year. Read More

ANSI's Roy Swift speaks at National Credentialing Summit.

Roy Swift, Ph.D., ANSI's senior director of personnel credentialing accreditation programs, was a featured speaker and panelist at National Credentialing Summit. Titled Paving the Way Ahead, summit brought together stakeholders to examine licensing and credentialing in private sector and to discuss what can be done to help U.S. veterans use military experience to qualify for civilian jobs. ASTM Weathering Committee names Joe S. Robbins III chairman.

Joe S. Robbins III, CEO of Arizona Desert Testing LLC, has been named chairman of ASTM International Committee G03 on Weathering and Durability, which oversees 32 international standards related to durability and performance of organic/inorganic nonmetallic materials, components, and combined assemblies subjected to various environments. Robbins, who joined ASTM in 1984, works on several G03 subcommittee and chairs Subcommittee G03.02 on Natural and Environmental Exposure Tests. Read More

Tire Retread and Repair Information Bureau (TRIB) is expanding "Spot The Retreads" competition at Mid-America Trucking Show, which takes place March 22-24 in Louisville, KY. Visitors to booth 13036 can enter to try and correctly identify range of new and retreaded tires. Participants who correctly identify all tires will be entered into daily drawings for sets of 8 commercial truck tires to be retreaded on participants' own casings. Champagne, Ph.D., president of Champagne Coal Consulting Inc. in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, has been appointed chairman of ASTM International Committee D05 on Coal and Coke, which oversees 75 standards related to industrialization of coal and coke derived from coal. Champagne's work is focused on research and research management in coal utilization, liquefaction, and gasification, as well as in metallurgy, non-destructive testing, and power line vibration studies. Machine Vision Market Grew 5% in North America in 2011.

According to figures released by AIA, sales of machine vision components and systems in North America climbed 5% in 2011 to nearly $1.9 billion. Paul Kellett, AIA Director of Market Analysis, noted that sales of machine vision components, including smart cameras, grew 13%, while application-specific systems grew 2%. As reflection of overall economic growth beginning to slow down, Kellett noted that first half of year was stronger than second half. Read More

NREL and UCLA certify record for polymer solar cell efficiency.

March 13, 2012

Scientists boosted significance of tandem polymer solar cells by successfully testing cells with low-bandgap polymers that achieved certified conversion efficiencies of 8.62 ±0.3% with respect to standard terrestrial reporting conditions. According to researchers at NREL and UCLA, that is the highest measured efficiency for a polymer solar cell. UCLA recently improved on this by incorporating IR-absorbing polymer from Sumitomo Chemical. NREL measured power conversion efficiency at 10.6 ±0.3%. Read More

IPC Market Data Update offers hope for U.S. recovery.

Although global economic growth and electronics industry growth slowed in fourth quarter of 2011, signs that recovery is resuming in U.S. is apparent, according to IPC's quarterly report, Market Data Update. Conference Board's Leading Economic Index® has remained flat for a year, but has been inching up since last October, while U.S. Purchasing Managers' Index is also in positive territory and trending upward. In addition, IPC's PCB book-to-bill ratio edged up to 1.01, just above parity, in January. Read More
