HI appoints Michael B. Michaud as Executive Director.

Michael B. Michaud will begin his role as Executive Director on May 1, 2015. For the past 19 years, Michaud has held various leadership roles at ASME where he currently is Managing Director, Global Alliances, responsible for ASME’s Global Strategy Execution and International Business Development. Prior assignments included managing several business areas including ASME’s Training and Professional Development portfolio and ASME’s Gas Turbine and Petroleum Technology Institutes. Read More

Christopher Hart takes the helm of the NTSB.

Christopher A. Hart was sworn as the 13th chairman of the NTSB during ceremony presided over by Chief Administrative Law Judge Alfonso Montano. Chairman Hart is an aerospace engineer, attorney, and licensed pilot with commercial, multi-engine, and instrument ratings. Prior to stepping into role of acting chairman, Hart had served as vice chairman and a member of the Board since 2009. He also served as a member of the Board from 1990 to 1993. Read More

ASABE Completely Revises Standard for polyethylene pipe.

March 26, 2015

ASABE revised its standard on polyethylene pipe used in microirrigation. As complete rewrite of previous standard, ASAE S435.1, Polyethylene Pipe Used for Microirrigation Laterals, reflects current best practices. It contains requirements and methods for testing of polyethylene materials and of pipe or tubing made from those materials for microirrigation. Also, standard covers classification, nomenclature, test requirements and methods, workmanship, dimensions, and methods of marking. Read More

BIO urges Governor Herbert to sign important legislation.

BIO calls upon Governor Herbert to sign important legislation that serves to update existing Utah laws governing substitution of interchangeable biologic medicines. Utah Senate unanimously passed House Bill 279, a bill that amends provisions of the 2013 Pharmacy Practice Act. House Bill 279 represents significant step forward, ensures transparency and communication between patients and their treatment teams, and is fully consistent with BIO’s principles on biologic substitution. According to SME's Advanced Manufacturing Media, more than half of manufacturing leaders are planning to invest in advanced manufacturing technologies in the next 2 years. Findings are part of organization’s Advanced Manufacturing Opportunities Report, which highlights results of a survey of manufacturing executives, engineers, and managers on why companies are investing in and using advanced manufacturing technologies such as industrial robotics, additive manufacturing, or 3D printing. DOE announces two Notices of Proposed Rulemaking.

March 25, 2015

U.S. DOE released Notices of Proposed Rulemaking for Energy Conservation Standards for Pumps and for Test Procedures for Commercial and Industrial Pumps, both of which can be found on HI website and are available for public comment and review. HI intends to respond on behalf of its members, both in writing and at April 29th Public Hearing. NADCA files comments opposing EPA ground level ozone rule.

March 25, 2015

NADCA filed official comments opposing EPA's proposed rule lowering National Ambient Air Quality Standards for Ozone from 75 ppb to 65 ppb. Recent study showed proposal will reduce GDP by $140 billion annually and could exceed $1 trillion in compliance costs. These restrictions will severely affect local manufacturing community and may force die casting businesses to forgo expanding facilities or purchasing new equipment for fear of exceeding latest limits set by regulators in Washington. ANSI C136.14-2014 American National Standard for Roadway and Area Lighting Equipment—Elliptically Shaped, Enclosed Side-mounted Luminaires covers dimensional, maintenance, and light distribution features that permit interchange of enclosed, side-mounted luminaires for horizontal-burning HID lamps and other light sources. IPC Survey assesses Pb vs Pb-free costs and supply chain risks.

"Fast facts" survey launched by IPC will provide data with which to assess current state of supply chain for military electronics suppliers and issues surrounding trend toward lead (Pb)-free electronics. Open to participation by all manufacturers of printed circuit boards (PCBs) and electronic assemblies for military or aerospace applications, this confidential survey will be available until March 27. IBM Researchers attach silicon photonic chips to processor.

Scientists at IBM Research have established method to integrate silicon photonic chips with processor in same package, avoiding need for transceiver assemblies. Method is scalable and enables simultaneous interfacing of many optical connections between silicon photonic chip and system. New technique, which will be presented March 25 at OFC Conference and Exposition, should lower cost and increase performance, energy efficiency, and size of future data centers, supercomputers, and cloud systems. BIO and Colorado BioScience Association call upon Governor Hickenlooper to sign legislation to create pathway for substitution of interchangeable biologic medicines. Senate Bill 71 includes transparent communication on all biologic medicines dispensed in order to maintain consistent and complete medical record. FAA Aerospace Forecast Fiscal Years 2015 to 2035 indicates U.S. aviation system will continue to grow over next 2 decades as based on increased Revenue Passenger Miles, U.S. air carrier Load Factors, passenger counts, and air cargo traffic. According to FAA Administrator Michael Huerta, improving economy bodes well for USA's air transportation system.
