NREL Growth Forum brings together clean energy innovators.

November 9, 2015

NREL's Industry Growth Forum attracted more than 400 investors, entrepreneurs, technologists, and thought leaders. Two-day forum highlighted clean energy technology and business developments. In addition to hearing business case presentations from 30 clean energy companies, participants were engaged by comprehensive lineup of speakers, in-depth panel discussions, and facilitated networking opportunities. ASHRAE extends deadline for Call for Papers for IAQ 2016.

Call for papers for the IAQ 2016 Conference, "Defining Indoor Air Quality: Policy, Standards and Best Practices," co-organized by ASHRAE and AIVC, has been extended until Nov 30, 2015. Scheduled for Sept 12–14, 2016, conference will focus on current and emerging definitions of indoor air quality and how they are – or could be – implemented in government policies and in standards for the design and operation of buildings and other indoor environments used worldwide. ASABE Adopts ISO Standard for testing auto-guidance systems.

American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) announced publication of ASABE/ISO 12188-2:2012, Tractors and machinery for agriculture and forestry — Test procedures for positioning and guidance systems in agriculture — Part 2: Testing of satellite-based auto-guidance systems during straight and level travel. Facilitating manufacturing, safety advancements, and product marketing worldwide, this adoption further harmonizes national and international standardization. Read More

MESA International opens Cybersecurity Working Group.

Open to global manufacturers and solution providers, Cybersecurity Working Group will clarify technology-related information businesses must deal with today while providing practical guidance, specifically as it pertains to manufacturing or production-related operation. USNC announces IEC's Edison and 1906 Award winners.

Eight recipients were chosen for the Thomas A. Edison Award which recognizes exceptional achievement, dedicated service, and significant contributions to IEC through effective management of their committees of currently active TC/SC Officers and officers of the IEC Conformity Assessment Systems and their subsidiary bodies. Additionally, 36 USNC members have been selected to receive the IEC 1906 Award in recognition of their noteworthy contributions to IEC and the electrotechnical industry. Read More

NIST seeks comments on guide to help manage IT assets.

National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence invites comments on a draft practice guide designed to help financial services companies monitor and manage IT hardware and software assets more securely and efficiently. Developed in collaboration with 10 technology  vendors,  IT Asset Management (Special Publication 1800-5a) demonstrates how commercially available technologies can be used to track location and configuration of networked devices and software across organization. Touchless 1-Pixel Laser Tracker Probe advances spatial metrology.

November 6, 2015

Pixel Probe, a recent invention within NIST CTL, features in 2015 Autumn Journal of the Coordinate Metrology Society Conference. Used with laser tracker, this spatial metrology probe allows resolution to 25 microns without physical contact. Three machine vision cameras project single pixel to one location in space that defines touch-less probe. Benefits derived from this probe will provide data from objects difficult or extremely challenging to measure using existing tracker probes. Read More

EPA requires ASARCO to cut toxic emissions.

November 6, 2015

Settlement with ASARCO requires company to spend $150 million to install new equipment and pollution control technology to reduce emissions of toxic heavy metals at a large copper smelter in Hayden, AZ. Company will also fund local environmental projects valued at $8 million, replace diesel locomotive with cleaner model for $1 million, and pay $4.5 million civil penalty. Air pollutants should be reduced by at least 8.5 tons/year, and PM emissions are expected to be reduced by 3,500 tons/year. Read More

ASABE Revises Standard focused on v-belt and v-ribbed belt drives.

American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) announced completion of ASAE S211.6, V-Belt And V-Ribbed Belt Drives for Agricultural Machines. Last revised in 1998, this standard has been updated to reflect current industry technology as well as harmonize content with Association for Rubber Product Manufacturers and ISO standards. EPA calls for Presidential Green Chemistry Award nominations.

November 6, 2015

EPA announced its request for nominations for 2016 Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards for companies or institutions that have developed a process or product that better protects public health and the environment. Since start of program, EPA has presented awards for 104 new technologies that have reduced more than 826 million pounds of hazardous chemicals and solvents, savings 21 billion gallons of water, and eliminating 7.8 billion pounds of carbon dioxide releases. NIST to support cybersecurity jobs Heat Map.

As part of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s "Skills for Business" initiative, NIST is funding the development of a visualization tool that will show the demand for and availability of critical cybersecurity jobs across the nation. Funded through NIST’s National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education, project will provide data to help employers, job seekers, policy makers, training providers, and guidance counselors meet today’s increasing demand for cybersecurity workers. Indoor Air Quality Association, a member of ANSI, has named Stephanie Sears its new executive director. In this role, Ms. Sears will be the main liaison to the association’s Board of Directors, coordinating projects with IAQA volunteers and staff. NIST releases Community Resilience Planning Guide.

NIST issued the Community Resilience Planning Guide for Buildings and Infrastructure Systems to help U.S. communities better withstand and rebound from the shocks of severe weather, earthquakes, and other hazards. Issued on the third anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, guide lays out a practical 6-step process that communities can follow to develop resilience plans to help them prepare for hazards, adapt to changing conditions, and withstand and rapidly recover from disruptions. SPE Calls for Nominations for Thermoformer of the Year award.

Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) Thermoforming Division announced its call for nominations for annual Thermoformer of the Year award, which recognizes individuals who have made significant industry-related technical, educational, or managerial contributions. Nominees will be evaluated and reviewed by the SPE Thermoforming Division Board of Directors during its Winter Board Meeting in February, and nomination deadline is December 15, 2015. Read More

BIO Issues Statement on EPA Rule for 2014/2015/2016 RFS.

BIO, in reaction to transmittal of final rules for 2014/2015/2016 Renewable Fuel Standards (RFS) to White House Office of Management and Budget for review, claimed EPA will continue to undermine goals and requirements, undercut investment in advanced and cellulosic biofuels, and raise GHG emissions in transportation fuel sector. Construction Unemployment Rates improve in September.

November 5, 2015

Not Seasonally Adjusted (NSA) construction unemployment rates for the country and 48 states were down in September on a year-over-year basis. For the first three quarters of the year, construction added 121,000 seasonally adjusted jobs. At the same time, NSA jobs increased by 199,000 from September 2014 to September 2015. September also marks the fourth month in a row that all state construction unemployment rates were under 10%. Read More
