BSA publishes industry brief on wind power.

Educational Services Committee has released BSA Industry Brief: Wind Power, which details use of bearings in growing wind turbine industry. It begins with Equipment and Application Overview, then goes on to detail essential parts of wind turbine and identifies particular bearing requirements for each part. Topics covered include How Wind Turbines Work, The Main Shaft, Gear Box, Generator, and Pitch and Yaw. Special attention is paid to Operations and Maintenance and Recommended O/M Practices. Foundation Announces 2011-2012 education scholarship recipients.

Fieldbus Foundation announced 2011-2012 recipients of James O. Gray-Fieldbus Foundation Scholarship Fund, which establishes perpetual $250,000 endowment fund providing scholarships to students seeking careers in industrial automation profession. Recipients include Wataru Futagoishi from Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan; Thunyaporn Sathaporn of King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL) in Bangkok, Thailand; and Gang Zhao from SAIT Polytechnic in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. AAMA to provide information on LRRP opt-out provision.

Introduced by Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK), Lead Exposure Reduction Amendments Act of 2012 seeks to restore the "Opt-Out" provision removed from EPA's Lead Renovate, Repair and Painting rule in April 2010. Legislation has been directed to Committee on Environment and Public Works (EPW). AAMA supports revisions to current LRRP requirements and will be providing information to members of EPW to address questions regarding EPA's decision to eliminate Opt-Out provision. Read More

Kansas Refinery to Pay Penalty for environmental violations.

Coffeyville Resources Refining and Marketing (CRRM) has agreed to pay civil penalty totaling more than $970,000 as well as invest over $4.25 million on new pollution controls and $6.5 million in operating costs. Settlement resolves alleged violations of Clean Air Act (CAA), Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), and Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA) at Coffeyville, KS refinery. ANSI Seeks Input on survey for ISO building code standards.

International Organization for Standardization's (ISO) Technical Advisory Group (TAG) 8, Building, is exploring potential need to further develop international building code standards. As U.S. member body to ISO, ANSI invites interested parties to respond to survey on this matter. Input is requested on following by March 23, 2012: standards dealing with structure design, type of system of standards for basis of development, and interest in taking active role in development work. NIST Will Host Public Workshop on conformity assessment.

On April 11, NIST will host Conformity Assessment - Approaches and Best Practices. This public workshop, to be held at NIST headquarters in Gaithersburg, MD, will provide forum for discussion on current approaches to conformity assessment among federal agencies and private sector. AMT elected its 2012-2013 officers and directors, the first to be elected following merger of AMT and AMTDA, on March 10 at its 2012 Annual Meeting in Orlando, FL. Electees included Timothy B. Dining and Ronald Mager as Co-Chairmen, R. Stephen Flynn as First Vice Chairman and Treasurer, Kevin Kilgallen as Second Vice Chairman, and Brian J. Papke as Secretary. Revised standard, ANSI/ASAE S279.16, Lighting and Marking of Agricultural Equipment on Highways, corrects an inconsistency in the equation for measuring spectrophotometric color values of fluorescent materials. Mr. Walker was Chair of committee which produced Rotodynamic Pumps for Assessment of Applied Nozzle Loads, ANSI/HI 9.6.2-2011. Nonresidential Construction Spending slips in January.

March 14, 2012

According to March 1 report by U.S. Commerce Department, total nonresidential construction spending decreased 0.8% in January to $566.4 billion. However, total nonresidential construction spending was up 7.9% from January 2011. Private nonresidential construction spending was down 1.5% for the month, but was 16.6% higher than one year ago. In addition, public nonresidential construction spending was down 0.1% for January, but was up 0.4% from same time last year. Read More

Roy Swift, Ph.D., ANSI's senior director of personnel credentialing accreditation programs, was a featured speaker and panelist at National Credentialing Summit. ASTM Weathering Committee names Joe S. Robbins III chairman.

Joe S. Robbins III, CEO of Arizona Desert Testing LLC, has been named chairman of ASTM International Committee G03 on Weathering and Durability, which oversees 32 international standards related to durability and performance of organic/inorganic nonmetallic materials, components, and combined assemblies subjected to various environments. Robbins, who joined ASTM in 1984, works on several G03 subcommittee and chairs Subcommittee G03.02 on Natural and Environmental Exposure Tests. Read More
