Trailer Towing Standard has revised descriptions, procedures.

Updated SAE International trailer towing standards determine trailer weight rating of all tow-vehicles and maintain fair competition among manufacturers. Requiring vehicles to be tested under consistent conditions and parameters, SAE standard J2807, Performance Requirements for Determining Tow-Vehicle Gross Combination Weight Rating and Trailer Weight Rating, defines performance requirements for measuring vehicle's gross combination weight rating (GCWR) and trailer weight rating (TWR). Revised Standard offers guidance on high speeds, fine lines.

To help designers and manufacturers face challenges associated with rising chip speeds and decreasing system sizes, IPC has released A revision of IPC-4204, Flexible Metal-Clad Dielectrics for Use in Fabrication of Flexible Printed Circuitry. Updated standard, which details materials that let designers and manufacturers move to higher frequencies, addresses basic aspects of flexible circuit board design and also includes focused information. John Horsley addresses surface transportation bill inaction.

June 5, 2012

AASHTO Executive Director John Horsley issued statement regarding inability of House and Senate Conference Committee to reach agreement on surface transportation bill. According to Horsley, thousands of jobs will be lost unless House and Senate can put politics aside and move forward on a highway and transit bill. Without bill, America's surface transportation programs will shut down July 1 and next year, drastic cutbacks will need to be made because of revenue shortfall in Highway Trust Fund. Read More

University of Maryland wins 2012 Hydrogen Student Design Contest.

June 5, 2012

Panel of 16 judges from industry, government, and national laboratories declared University of Maryland's team, with 91% of available points, as Grand Prize winner of won 2012 Hydrogen Student Design Contest. Winning design - tri-generation system that produces electricity, heat, and hydrogen - would reduce equivalent of taking 2,300 cars off the road and utilizes organic and municipal solid waste via gasification and anaerobic digestion technology. Electroindustry Business Confidence Index points to growth.

June 4, 2012

NEMA's Electroindustry Business Confidence Index (EBCI) for current North American conditions decreased to 54.2 in May from 59.1 in April and 18.3 points cumulatively since February's post-recession high. Despite this decline, results continue to point to economic environment conducive to industry growth. EBCI for future North American conditions also lowered in May, off 11 points from April, but remained in positive territory at 70.8. Read More

Standing 12% above last year's level and 52% above that of mid-2009, NEMA's Primary Industrial Controls Index increased 11.3% on quarter-to-quarter basis during first 3 months of 2012. Primary Industrial Controls and Adjustable Speed Drives Index, during 1Q 2012, rose 9.9% from Q4 2011 level and 9.5% year-over-year. Also, manufacturing sector experienced surge of activity in 1Q 2012, marked by 10.4% annualized increase in industrial production for manufactured goods. Read More

Joe Robbins receives ASTM Award of Merit.

Joe S. Robbins III, CEO of Arizona Desert Testing LLC, has received ASTM's Award of Merit from Committee G03 on Weathering and Durability. A member of ASTM since 1984, Robbins is current chairman of G03. In 1998, he co-founded Arizona Desert Testing LLC, a materials testing laboratory that specializes in accelerated and outdoor weathering services. Prior to that, he held various engineering roles at DSET Laboratories Inc., including chief engineer, manager of weathering division, and president. Read More
