IEEE Honors NREL's Keith Emery with William R. Cherry Award.

Keith Emery, a principal scientist at NREL, received William R. Cherry Award at 39th IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Photovoltaic Specialists Conference in Tampa Bay. Over his career, Emery worked to bring certainty to claims made by solar companies about efficiency of their PV cells and modules. He also wrote 320 scientific publications. Emery gives much due credit to colleagues who work in his lab and have, on average, ~16 years at NREL. Read More

Temporal Methods Standard covers product perceptions over time.

Proposed standard ASTM WK41798, Guide for Temporal Methods, is being developed by Subcommittee E18.04 on Fundamentals of Sensory. Based on workshop findings, standard will address principles concerned with time-related sensory perceptions. These include data collection under range of conditions and temporal rates, elaborating on single-attribute measurements to address multiple attributes and multiple events or exposures, and exploring analysis of data obtained through these methods. ASTM Wood Committee Bestows Award of Merit upon Borjen Yeh.

Borjen (B.J.) Yeh, Ph.D., received Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow for his contributions to development of international standards for ASTM International Committee D07 on Wood. ASTM International members since 1990, Yeh works on multiple D07 subcommittees and is chairman of D07.02 on Lumber and Engineered Wood Products. He is also member of several other ASTM committees and, outside ASTM, is member of several other organizations/associations. Read More

Proposals Requested to help GA transition to unleaded fuels.

FAA has asked world's fuel producers to submit proposals for fuel options that would help general aviation (GA) industry make transition to unleaded fuel. FAA will assess viability of candidate fuels in terms of their impact on existing fleet, their production and distribution infrastructure, their impact on environment and toxicology, and economic considerations. Fuel producers are asked to submit data packages for candidate replacement unleaded fuel formulations by July 1, 2014. Read More

PTDA 2013 Industry Summit offers support through networking.

NIST Test helps improve firefighter breathing equipment.

As of September 1, 2013, standard firefighter breathing equipment cannot be certified to NFPA standards unless facepiece lenses pass test developed by NIST. Said test is designed to reduce degradation and possible failure of facepiece lens in SCBA under high-heat firefighting conditions. Incorporated within 2013 update of its standard for SCBA units, new Elevated Temperature Heat and Flame Resistance Test exposes SCBA to 500°F for 5 min in oven followed by 10 sec of direct flame contact. NIST Microscopy Technique could aid 3D component development.

Through-Focus Scanning Optical Microscopy (TSOM) technique, developed at NIST for improving optical microscopes, has been applied to monitoring next generation of computer chip circuit components. Sensitive to features as small as 10 nm across, TSOM has been shown to detect tiny differences in 3D shapes of circuit components. This addresses industry measurement challenges for manufacturing process control and maintaining viability of optical microscopy in electronics manufacturing. Read More

USAID/ANSI Alliance to aid countries with TBT compliance.

ANSI and United States Agency for International Development (USAID) have agreed to collaborate on multiyear public-private partnership intended to assist developing countries in implementing their commitments under World Trade Organization's Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) agreement. ANSI and USAID will oversee the selection process, with input from U.S. government and private-sector experts. Expressions of interest from developing country partners are now being accepted.
